I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#383 - 377. Beautiful Past
"Miss Kania."
The security guard at the door nodded when he saw her approaching, then stepped aside to reveal the combination lock.
She walked to the door, raised her hand, and pressed a few buttons before placing her palm on the detection area to scan her soul.
The mechanical door slowly opened, revealing a deep, metallic passage.
When Kania first accepted Shen Zongdao's request, she thought she was merely helping a politician persecute some naive esper.
She didn't particularly like such things, but she couldn't say she was opposed to them either, since none of it mattered to her.
However, as she continued to investigate Mann and saw the information submitted by others, she felt increasingly strange about the matter, because the issues that could be fabricated and exaggerated about this Mann were simply too numerous.
Although many of them seemed particularly far-fetched, some of them did look suspicious.
This also reminded her of Mann's behavior at the time.
The motives and emotions Mann displayed were always reasonable, but if one were to assume that this was a deliberate disguise, it could be completely explained, and even some of the more peculiar aspects became more rounded and reasonable.
Mann betrayed Divine Firmament because he desperately needed anti-spirit metal, knowing that he could not persuade her, and could only accept the Federation's request to negotiate with Divine Firmament as if grasping at a straw.
Although this explanation was already reasonable enough.
But the explanation that Mann did not betray Divine Firmament and did not need anti-spirit metal at all, that this was just a smokescreen he used to confuse the Federation, and that his real purpose was to contact Divine Firmament, seemed to be more in line with what she saw.
Realizing this possibility, she repeatedly reviewed Mann's files and videos, and when she saw the recordings of Mann participating in the duel with Atlantis and negotiating with the Federation, Kania vaguely sensed some suspicious points in her heart.
In fact, Mann did not expose any flaws, but all of Mann's words and deeds could be explained according to him not betraying Divine Firmament, and considering that all of his words and deeds were like this, it was somewhat too coincidental.
In her intuition, there was at least a 70% chance that Mann really had some problems, although it might not be as serious as colluding with Divine Firmament, his motive for joining the Federation was likely not so pure.
Realizing this, Kania notified Shen Zongdao and suggested that they change their tactics, really use experts in this field to investigate Mann's past and background, stop muddling through, and really try to dig up some big news.
However, after hearing her speculation, Shen Zongdao hesitated for a moment, but ultimately did not adopt this approach.
He felt that the risk of doing so was too high, after all, he didn't have full confidence, and besides, a real investigation might not yield results in a short time, and most importantly, the original approach was going smoothly, so there was no need to change the plan.
Of course, Kania felt that Shen Zongdao might not completely believe her judgment either.
Although she told him that there was a 70% chance, for Shen Zongdao, her 70% chance was his 30% probability.
Although Shen Zongdao rejected her proposal, Kania always felt that she might have really caught something.
So she came here again.
Kania finally reached the end of the passage.
Similar to the reality-warped prison where Divine Firmament was located, there were also multiple layers of inspection facilities here, but the degree of strictness was completely incomparable to that of Divine Firmament, mainly because the girl at the end of the passage was no longer of much value.
Kania pushed open the door of the passage.
Soft golden sunlight shone on Kania's body, a few white clouds floated in the azure sky, lush green grass swayed in the wind, a clear stream flowed along the mountainside, bright red flowers were stretching their bodies, and a cool breeze with a hint of sweetness caressed her cheeks.
But she just wanted to vomit.
Because Kania knew that if she bent down and rummaged a few times, she would see the color of the soil gradually turn crimson, and then she would touch those bones that would never change, and might even see familiar faces.
This was the site of the accident that year, and also the burial place of her former colleagues.
Kania walked along the path towards the interior of the forest, preparing to go to Alice's cottage.
"You still have the face to come back here."
As the voice came out, a red-haired girl slowly walked out of the shadows of the trees.
Kania looked at her and said:
"Lilith, I came back here for her."
Lilith sneered and said:
"Liar, I won't believe anything you say."
Kania looked at the girl and said:
"I don't care what you say, but someone from the Federation took Alice's parents' blood and wanted to trade it to me..."
Lilith scoffed:
"The Federation? Trade? Blood? Haven't you grown up after all these years?
Do you really think you can change anything?
Unless some good person comes out and kills your teacher, there is no way and no possibility to change Alice's situation.
"Have your studies in these years yielded any results?
Have you successfully solved Alice's mental problems?
Your research, in addition to further exacerbating the damage to her mind, has no practical effect at all.
"You're just satisfying yourself."
Faced with Lilith's accusations, Kania remained calm:
"I don't need to see her, I just need some information from you."
She didn't care how Lilith or Alice viewed her.
Hearing this, Lilith's hostility slightly decreased, but she still didn't have a good look on her face:
"What do you want to know?"
Kania asked:
"Alice has seen Mann, right?"
Lilith said somewhat puzzledly:
"Why are you asking about him?"
Kania didn't hide anything from Lilith:
"My job is to investigate whether Mann has violated the ceasefire agreement with the Federation.
He is a former member of the Savior Alliance, since you have seen him before, I think Alice must have seen something?"
Lilith narrowed her eyes:
"Wrong."
Kania didn't understand the meaning of this answer:
"What's wrong?"
Lilith shook her head:
"You shouldn't have come to us."
Kania said:
"I just want to know what Mann looks like in your eyes, does he have a pipe in his mouth?"
Lilith replied in a cold voice:
"Coat and hat."
Kania was stunned:
"Are you sure, a coat and hat shouldn't appear at the same time..."
Although this couldn't prove whether Mann had violated the agreement, it revealed that there were indeed some abnormal aspects about him.
Lilith said with a cold expression:
"So you better stay away from him."
Kania didn't listen to this sentence:
"They promised me Alice's parents' blood, which will be of great help to my research.
As for whether Mann is dangerous or not, it doesn't matter to me, he is not more dangerous than the Federation and you.
"Besides the coat and hat, what else did you see?"
Lilith paused, and finally relented:
"I saw fangs and shadows.
"Don't believe what he shows you."
