I Reincarnated As A Stone

Chapter 12 - Earth you are, earth you will control

After finding a good place to train, I slipped silently between the bushes and looked around hoping that no enemies were hidden. It was a fairly clear place, where monsters or anything could find me easily, but at the same time I could see them just as easily. Obviously, I made sure that anything dangerous wasn’t in the zone before going into action. After carefully inspecting everything and verifying that no sound could be heard, I got ready to start.

‘Ok, with what I should go first?’

It was clear in which field I should focus: magic. Helpy brought up that telekinesis was in the category of neutral magic, but what exactly magic is?

‘Magic, huh? This brings back old memories.’

Memories of the old tabletop RPGs that I used to play when I was young came to my mind. The ones where mages and wizards could learn devastating spells… and when rolling a 1 on the die, they exploited themselves along with their companions, causing playmates to throw theirs at the mages faces. But that couldn’t happen with real magic… right? That aside, mages could conjure from a paltry ball of fire to unleash terrible storms and hurricanes or even earthquakes. That was the magic I wanted.

‘Yes, I like that! I like it too much!’

Of course, I had no intention of going straight for such cataclysmic spells. One must start with the basics. Another important point of most role-playing games is to focus on something in particular, or you get crap instead of a character. If you want to have it all, you end up being worthless. I can tell it from experience… That error would not be repeated!

Magic was the same, it’s not a good idea to try using all types of magic that exist at the same time. The best is focusing on one or two branches at most, and after mastering them try with others. The tricky part is choosing with one to start with. Maybe some magic is not suitable for you. After all, it was difficult to imagine that a single person could learn each and every existing magic. There must always be limitations or the game becomes too unbalanced.

‘I wonder if there is such a thing as an affinity or something like that… Helpy, dear, tell me something about it.’

I have no idea of Helpy’s gender, and being a skill, it’s even questionable if she has. Or rather, it is questionable the part that one might think that she has… but I feel better this way, any problem? You prefer to think that the only person who talks to you is a man or a woman, huh, huh?

[The vast majority of entities capable of using magic have one or more affinities with some specific type of magic. Learning magic with one has an affinity is much easier than learning others.]

‘Just as I thought. Tell me what types of magic exists.’

[Neutral, fire, water, wind, earth, nature, lightning, ice, light, dark, shadow, time, space, and mental.]

‘Oh shit, there are more than I thought… Well, how can I know with which ones I have an affinity for?’

[There are specific tools to know.]

‘Of course… I just can guess so.’

It was really useful to have an entire manual at my disposal, too bad it did not have such specific information… although perhaps at higher levels it would. I could not lose the hope of having a super Helpy that knew absolutely everything.

‘Let’s see, let’s see, what will my affinity be? Perhaps the mighty and unstoppable fire? The lightning would not be bad either. Both are fearsome and devastating elements. Ice wouldn’t be a bad option either and I can’t imagine shooting beams of light like a lase. Heh, heh, I can’t decide with one I like the most…’

‘Who am I trying to deceive, everyone clearly knows about my affinity… Damn mineral life…’

I scanned one more time my surroundings, making sure again that no monsters were nearby, and went a bit further into the vegetation cleared terrain.

‘Probably earth is needed to use earth.’

I already had good mana control. If my guess was correct, it wouldn’t take long to find the trick for magic.

‘There I go.’

I threw mana straight to the ground. I hadn’t used the mana control skill since I learned the other skills, but it was still fresh in my mind. The difficulty of controlling mana outside the body could not be compared with controlling it inside. My MPs blew up in seconds.

‘Nothing, huh? Whatever, I feel like I’m on the right track… I know it’s going to be risky, but I’ll do it anyway…’

Even though it was dangerous, I decided to trust my sense of danger and empty my mana well. As with my MPs, the stored mana blew up in just a couple of minutes.

[Ability “Mana control” is now at level 2.]

[New magic acquired: Mold earth (Lvl 1).]

‘Finally here it is!’

It was a very simple magic that only allowed me to move the earth from one place to another and change its shape, but it was something to start!

A new category was added to my status. Apparently, the mana cannon and mana bomb weren’t really considered magic despite being pure mana attacks.

‘Doesn’t magic count as skills?’

[Magic is included in a category apart from abilities and special abilities.]

‘Oh, I see. Well, it’s a bit weird, but there must be a reason… I guess.’

The truth, understanding exactly where the limit between a skill and magic was somewhat confusing. However, that doesn’t matter to me at that moment. I was happy about having something more to deal with the dungeon.

‘And this is just the beginning. Fear me dungeon, I’ll escape at all costs,’ I thought as I looked at the sky that peeked over the trees that prevented me from seeing the horizon.

Or so I wanted to do, but… could I get out after reaching the last floor? The answer was not clear....
