I, the wizard, the foolish Buddha
#74 - Tutor Selection
Outside, the sunlight was bright.
Roland gazed around, taking in the scenery of the Black Abyss Academy.
The entire academy resembled a small city, with a massive castle standing on the edge of a mountain abyss to the far north. Within its high walls were numerous buildings, and dozens of courtyards of varying sizes.
There were public courses in the morning, so many people were on the roads.
However, many people also lingered in some of the courtyards, some frolicking and playing freely, others gathering together to engage in some kind of sport. Roland couldn't understand what kind of sport it was, but these activities seemed popular among the White Warlocks.
The vast majority of these people were White Pawn Apprentices.
Although the Black Abyss Apprentices dressed similarly to the White Pawn Apprentices, they were easily distinguishable in a crowd.
Most of them were silent and aloof, rarely gathering together, mostly solitary, and always in a hurry. Moreover, these fellows rarely walked on the main roads, mostly avoiding crowds, walking in the shadows, not wanting any attention, and unwilling to communicate with others.
Occasionally, some Black Abyss Apprentices would stop in certain courtyards to watch the fun, but they always wore mocking and sneering expressions, tinged with a hint of envy.
Within this academy, there were two worlds.
The White Pawn Faction and the Black Abyss Faction each existed in their own world. The apprentices of the White Pawn Faction grew in a greenhouse, unable to see the dark side of the academy. The Black Abyss Apprentices grew in the storms of the night, unable to see the light.
"Mr. Benjamin," Helena asked curiously, pointing to a passing Black Abyss Apprentice, "Why are their uniforms different from ours?"
The Black Abyss Apprentice who was pointed at showed great displeasure. He frowned, pulled up his hood, avoided people's gazes, and turned a corner to leave.
Benjamin said with a smile, "This place is a bit different from our White Pawn Academy. We are divided into multiple branches, with uniform clothing but different emblems. Here, there is no division into different academies, but rather into multiple factions. The emblems are similar, but the clothing is different."
After listening, Roland sighed inwardly, 'These distinctive uniforms are the Black Abyss Warlocks' subtle struggle to preserve the existence of the Black Abyss Academy. No wonder Professor Bernard was so cautious when discussing black magic yesterday. The White Warlocks' power in the academy is too great. The Black Warlocks in the academy have to keep their heads down.'
Benjamin continued, "This division is good. How could those mixed-blood mongrels in Alexandria and the vermin of the Black Abyss be worthy of wearing the same clothing as us pure-blood Warlocks? If outsiders saw us wearing the same warlock robes, they would mistake our academy for a Muggle academy, or a prison. Hahaha."
Roland frowned secretly.
Helena said with an unhappy expression, "Mr. Benjamin, it's very rude of you to say that."
Benjamin glanced at Roland intentionally or unintentionally, and said to Helena with a smile, "Miss Helena, this is no longer the White Pawn Academy. A noble pure-blood like you must be careful in the future. There are many mongrels here. They are all very lowly. In order to infiltrate the great nobles, they will cling to you like stray dogs. Just kick them away. If there's any trouble, come find me anytime."
Roland revealed a strange expression.
He thought to himself, 'There's no way there could be such a fool. This person is definitely not targeting me.'
'This person is of low strength, yet holds an important position in the academy. He's probably someone's pawn. The White Pawn and Black Abyss have always been fighting overtly and covertly. As a special member of the Alexandria family, my status is neither high nor low, suitable for being made an example of. He must be deliberately picking a fight. If I respond, I'll fall into his trap. I'll ignore him for now.'
Roland suppressed the displeasure in his heart and didn't say a word.
In fact, Roland was overthinking things. His mind was too meticulous, always thinking too deeply about other people's intentions. But in reality, the other person wasn't even on that level.
This Benjamin, indeed, had some background, but his targeting of Roland wasn't for any deeper purpose.
He was purely arrogant, foolish, and petty.
Bernard had said yesterday that many White Pawn Warlocks valued bloodlines very much. In their eyes, only pure-blood Warlocks were considered human.
Being from a great family, many extreme bloodline-obsessed White Warlocks couldn't stand someone as lowly as Roland entering the Black Abyss family (Alexandria family) and defiling the noble bloodline.
Even if this family was somewhat opposed to them. It was still a great noble family, and its bloodline shouldn't be defiled.
This was the idea of some extreme White Pawn Warlocks.
Benjamin was one of them.
After passing through a courtyard, the group entered the castle. Benjamin led them to his office.
He took out four booklets and distributed them to Helena and the others.
Roland didn't receive a booklet. He looked at Benjamin, but Benjamin ignored him.
Benjamin said to Helena and the others with a smile, "You can sit on the sofa over there and read. The booklets contain information about the various professors. These people are currently recruiting apprentices. There are a total of 7 professors for the public courses, and the personnel are fixed.
In addition, if you wish to obtain more magical resources, you can choose to follow a mentor. Of course, you can also choose not to. Another thing to note is that whoever you follow, you will be a member of that faction in the future."
Helena moved closer to Roland and shared the booklet in her hand with him, "Senior Roland, it seems there are only four booklets. Let's look at one together."
"Okay." Roland lowered his head to read, not taking this small matter to heart.
After looking at the list of mentors, Roland found that the situation of the mentors was roughly like this.
[Ulric Bridger (X)]
[Formal Warlock]
[Race: Human]
Latest novel at six 9 books bar first!
[Faction: Old Black Abyss Faction]
[Specialized Subjects: Human Anatomy, Human Mutation, Negative Energy Particle Neutralization, Arcane Arts]
[Free Provision of Three Paid Knowledge]
[Requirements: Apprentices must cooperate with one experiment per month and must not refuse for any reason.]
Looking at this professor, Roland thought to himself, 'Hmm, free provision of three knowledge, the treatment is not bad. It's just that you have to cooperate with the experiment, alas, most of the human mutation experiments, the risk of assisting in such experiments is too high. So there must be trade-offs.'
"Eh ~~" Helena looked up and said, "Mr. Benjamin, why is the content of this Bridger professor on the first page so strange? And forced apprentices to cooperate with experiments?"
"Professor Bridger?" Benjamin took the booklet in surprise, looked at it, and then smiled, "Oh, you see, there's an X after his name, right? These are all guys who have been removed from the academy. Like this Bridger. Hmph, he's recruiting apprentices to do human experiments. This guy has been sent to Alaka Prison - sentenced to death."
Roland: "Ah?!"
Helena and the others exclaimed: "De-, death sentence?"
"That's right." Benjamin said mysteriously, "The warlocks of Alaka found in the investigation that he not only harmed apprentices, but also secretly researched black magic and traded with devils in hell. He is a complete black warlock, so he was sentenced to death. His ashes have now been scattered into the Sea of Storms. Counting the days, today is already the seventh day."
"Ah, that's so bad!" Helena and the others said indignantly: "No wonder he was sentenced to death!"
After listening, the sweat on Roland's face brushed down, and he thought to himself, 'Harmful to warlock apprentices (blonde freshmen, red-haired freshmen), understands black magic, trades with devils I have all three!'
At this time, Benjamin looked over with a smile that was not a smile, and he deliberately said to Roland: "I reported most of these black warlocks."
After listening, Roland was stunned for a long time, and thought to himself, 'You are really amazing. You dare to publicize this kind of thing everywhere. You won't live for a few days.'
Roland pursed his lips. This apprentice named Benjamin seemed to have set his sights on him. He didn't know what this guy's plans were or what his purpose was.
However, he couldn't stand being investigated.
