Ira was relieved about Miss Veronica's improved stamina post letter but it didn't last long. The next day she seemed more tired than before though her cheerfulness didn't fade and when they had breakfast together before he was supposed to go to work she threw up without warning.
He immediately began to panic, flashing back to when his parents got sick. One of their first symptoms was vomiting as well and they kept doing it until they wasted away from dehydration and malnutrition since they couldn't keep anything down.
"Miss Veronica! I need to get you to a doctor!"
Thankfully, years of farm chores had made him strong enough to carry her, though she protested that she didn't need that. Especially since he carried her all the way to the infirmary at the academy, which was quite a distance away.
Ira didn't care about that. She was so small that she wasn't terribly heavy to begin with and he needed to get her seen as soon as possible!
"Ira, I'm really fine. I just…hang on, I think I'm going to puke again," Miss Veronica moaned and he set her down for a moment so she could do so in a nearby bush.
Despite her protests he picked her up again as soon as she was done and began running, desperate to save her before she ended up like his parents. He couldn't lose her too! Not like that. He wouldn't have anyone left he loved if she died!
"Please help her!" Ira cried once they made it to the infirmary.
The doctor on duty seemed rather taken aback by their dramatic entrance. "…what exactly is the problem here, Mr. Brooks?"
"She's sick. She's been throwing up and has been tired too. Please figure out what's wrong and do something. Anything. She's all I've got left!"
"Ira…" Miss Veronica sighed before unexpectedly hugging him. "I'm sure I'm fine."
"You don't know that! That's why you need to get checked out," he insisted stubbornly, unable to return the hug in his worry.
"I'll take care of her so don't you worry about a thing," the doctor promised. "Please wait outside while I conduct an exam. This shouldn't take long. Why don't you go get yourself something to drink while you wait?"
Ira left reluctantly but did as the doctor said. He didn't want to wait! He needed to know she was okay for himself but also knew that he wasn't allowed in for privacy reasons. How bothersome!
He ended up wandering over to Professor Rothman's lab to let him know what was going on, saying he might be a bit late because he had to be certain Miss Veronica was okay before he could focus on his work. At least the professor was understanding about it.
By the time he got himself a cup of water and returned to the infirmary the exam still wasn't done so he spent several tense minutes waiting before the door opened. He immediately jumped to his feet and saw that Miss Veronica was looking pale and stunned. He couldn't tell if the news had been bad or not.
"What is it?" Ira asked nervously. "What's wrong?"
The doctor laughed. "Nothing is wrong at all! Mrs. May is with child. That is the reason she hasn't been feeling well lately."
His eyes nearly popped out of his head. "She's what?!"
Miss Veronica let out a small laugh at his reaction, seemingly broken out of her dazed state. "I was kind of shocked too. Obviously, I'm happy about it but the timing is a bit…"
Oh. Right. She was here while her husband was rather far away and she couldn't properly share the news with him. This probably wasn't the sort of thing that should be written in a letter. She was going to have to wait until she got home to tell him.
"Do you need to leave early?" Ira asked, though he didn't want her to go so soon.
She shook her head. "No, I've already arranged my passage back to the capital so I'll stick with that. I'm not so delicate that I can't continue spending time with you, Ira."
He was relieved. He didn't know much about pregnancy or childbirth in humans, though he had been present the time Thomas Krinzel helped out when one of the pigs gave birth. He needed to do some research.
"You do need to take it easy as much as possible though, as I said before," the doctor chided. "You won't be walking back to the capital, will you?"
"No, my husband is a bit overprotective so he already arranged for me to ride in a wagon without knowing I would need it. I'll take it easy as soon as I'm home," Miss Veronica reassured him.
"Good. Make sure you follow the instructions I gave you earlier and you'll be fine. Congratulations!"
She thanked him before gesturing for Ira to follow her out. He looked at her with a furrowed brow as they walked toward Professor Rothman's lab. "What instructions?"
"Things like making sure I eat and drink enough to provide for the baby and getting adequate rest. I haven't been around pregnant people much before but it should be easy enough to do what he recommended."
A small smile appeared on her face before she continued. "I didn't think it would happen this soon. Leo is going to flip!"
"…flip?"
"Ah, it's slang. It means he's going to freak out but in a good way. He told me a while back that he was looking forward to us having kids. He's going to be really excited when he finds out."
Ira didn't understand the appeal of such things himself but he was rather curious what Miss Veronica's child would be like. He already knew she was a wonderful mother figure. She would do a good job with it once it was born.
"Do you want a boy or a girl?" he asked.
Miss Veronica laughed. "That doesn't matter! All that does is that the baby is healthy."
"Can I come see it once it's born?"
"Of course you can! You will be its honorary big brother, after all. It will be born by your next summer holiday so as long as you don't have another research job or can get a few weeks off from it I would love to have you visit."
Ira caught onto what she said about him being an honorary big brother. That meant she truly did think of him as her son. He had already assumed she felt the same way about their relationship that he did but it was nice to hear all the same. It filled him with warmth from head to toe.
"That would be great!" he blurted.
The conversation ended there because they reached the lab and he had to get to work. He promised he would come to her boarding house as soon as he was done and told her to take it easy like the doctor said. She smiled and ruffled his hair at his concern, promising she would before leaving him at the door.
Professor Rothman noticed there was something up with him immediately. "You're in a strangely good mood considering your surrogate mother is sick."
"She isn't sick," Ira explained. "She's expecting! I'm going to be an older brother."
"I'm surprised you're so happy about it."
"Why wouldn't I be? I may not understand the appeal but Miss Veronica is happy and that's good enough for me. It won't hurt having more people like her running around either. She's special."
"I see. She must have had quite an influence on you," the professor noted. "Aside from paying for your tuition, I mean."
"She has," Ira said quietly.
Losing his parents and way of life was hard enough but all of the changing houses after they were gone made things worse. He had been little more than a shell when he met her and she breathed life back into him.
He had never met anyone else like her. There was something unique about Veronica May and he wasn't the only one who had noticed.
Braedon Krinzel once said something about Mr. Leo being quiet and withdrawn when he first came to the farm but blossoming under her influence as well. Ira wasn't the only one who had been helped by her light.
Ira had no doubt that she had managed to charm people in the capital as well. It was simply the kind of person she was. She did write about two friends in particular on a regular basis so it was highly likely she had a powerful influence on them as well.
Juliet and Elaine. Both castle laundresses, though one had gotten married to Mr. Leo's closest friend and quit.
Miss Veronica mentioned teaching Juliet how to knit so she could start selling socks on the side and teaching Elaine all sorts of homemaking skills since she knew very little about being a housewife. He already knew she was a fantastic teacher based on personal experience.
Her baby was very lucky to have her as a mother. Ira knew he was too. He got to work with a smile on his face thinking about it.. He was very lucky indeed.
