I'm a monster in Demon King's Castle
#66 - Rebellion
Green Time was approaching, and the middle-level corridor of the library was quiet. The selected collections from the seventh to twelfth book rooms had already been moved by the Minis into the Gate of Chaos and could be found in the corresponding classrooms. Google search reading
"Brother, Scourge is gone. Will any skeletons look for him?" Mini asked, gazing into Li Yue's dark eye sockets as they walked out of the Gate of Chaos.
Sometime later, the bed and sofa at the entrance of the thirteenth book room had been repaired by the Minis. Li Yue tossed the lute onto the sofa and casually stuck the bone sword into the wall.
"As far as we're concerned, the Skeleton Prince is dead; but to others, he's just whereabouts unknown. He'll only appear when I want him to." Li Yue leaned against the sofa, explaining a bit more to the Minis, not wanting to be beaten up by the little fellows again. "Scourge has become my identity, the identity I'll use to participate in the closed-door war training, so don't worry about me anymore and run into the Gate of Chaos."
"Brother... why do you want to participate in the closed-door war training? The guys inside are scary," Mini murmured. "Could it be... are you doing it to protect the Minis?"
"I just want to become stronger, so those guys won't be so scary anymore." Li Yue tried not to put too much pressure on the little fellow.
"Then I'll call Mini tomorrow and participate with you, brother." Mini clenched her little fist.
"Have you forgotten what you promised me before? What did I just say?" Li Yue remembered the helplessness of Mini and Mini when they were forced to draw lots.
"But we can't always let brother protect us. We want to help you too..."
"It's not time yet." Li Yue leaned down and touched Mini's head. "Inside, I have to do my best just to survive, let alone have the ability to protect you."
As Li Yue spoke, he observed his own state, glad that he hadn't encountered "Rebellion."
"Good girl, I'll also ask the Demon King Mentor about methods for the Minis to become stronger." Li Yue recalled Mentor's attitude, feeling that casually asking about it during advanced studies... wouldn't be a big problem.
"Demon King Mentor?" Mini's eyes lit up. "Have you met him? Is he strong? Is he handsome? Does he like the Minis?"
Mini asked three questions in a row, but Li Yue only answered the first: "Powerful, incomprehensibly powerful."
To this day, Li Yue still didn't know how the "Blessing" actually worked on him, those effects that almost broke away from the "rules"... how were they achieved?
"The Demon King Mentor teaches Demon Kings, so can the Minis also become Demon Kings?" Little Mini rubbed her hands, imagining herself sitting on that crude bone throne, with Mini serving wine by her side.
"Anyone can become a Demon King, as long as they are strong enough." This was the insight Li Yue gained in the Blood River—just like how the former Demon King could seize command in the simulation war, just like how the current City Lord could beat the former City Lord to the point where even his name wasn't recorded.
"But why do you want to become a Demon King? Aren't you going home with Mini to get married?" Li Yue tilted his head to look at Mini.
"If we become Demon Kings, the Book Demons won't be able to control us, and we can go back and get married..." Mini suddenly covered her mouth halfway through, remembering her childish painting, "Brother... did you hear it all? Did you see it all?"
"Yeah... I will sit on that bone throne..." Li Yue recalled that crude bone painting, but didn't say the second half—I don't know if I can return to my hometown.
Finally, Li Yue smiled inwardly—a lonely brain, what would I do going back?
Just as he was thinking, the light on the middle level of the library changed slightly. Green Time was coming, and the night was almost over; and along with the change of time, Li Yue also suddenly noticed that "Rebellion" had appeared in his status.
"I'm going to work now, don't follow me." Li Yue said the opposite, asking Mini to go to the library hall to translate—this was a superficial understanding of the "Rebellion" effect. Li Yue couldn't choose when it would take effect, so he could only try to make use of it.
And the state of "Absorption" was still there. It was time to read the books that he had painstakingly selected a few nights ago.
"Why... don't you want me anymore?" Mini's eyes were moist again, ready to burst into tears at any moment.
"No... you want to go... we translate..." Li Yue felt like he was about to crash, not knowing whether Mini's reaction was actually caused by "Rebellion" taking effect, or if it was ineffective.
"Go..." Li Yue could only vaguely state his purpose, returning to the appearance of a brain spirit and floating towards the lower level.
"Coming!" Mini followed with small steps, but because she was running too fast, she kicked up a gravel, which hit Li Yue's unprotected head, causing him to sway and feel a sharp sting at the same time!
"Rebellion"... mainly affects the environment?
Thinking this, Li Yue quickly opened his mind to sense all the changes in advance.
"Brother, you're going the wrong way..." Mini hummed weakly.
Li Yue was stunned, inexplicably feeling terrified—he was clearly going in the right direction just now, but somehow he went the wrong way...
Could it be that "Rebellion" can even change reality?
Oh no, it was because he was hit by the pebble and turned around...
"You go first, I'll rest for a while..." Li Yue pondered for a moment, deciding to endure "Rebellion" before returning to the lower level.
So Li Yue put on the Bones of Self-Healing again and lay down on the sofa, but the uneven sofa, under the exertion of some mixed force, caused Li Yue to slip to the ground and scatter into a pile.
"Go..." Li Yue lay flat on the spot, using his mind to control his bone hand to wave to Mini, but in a daze, he didn't operate the finger bone well, and it fell into the sofa gap and couldn't be found.
In the end, Mini went to the lower level at Li Yue's strong request, hesitatingly, turning her head three times with each step.
After Mini went downstairs, Li Yue basically confirmed that the "Rebellion" Blessing would not act on the living beings around him, mainly focusing on the impact on the environment and coincidences—it could be understood as bad luck, and it was best to find the safest place to endure it.
And this further strengthened Li Yue's idea of "enduring Rebellion before going downstairs"—it was okay to lie still, but a monster couldn't suddenly pop out of the ground and eat him, right?
Even if one did pop out, he had the Bones of Self-Healing to block it, but if he went to the hall to read, he wouldn't have a skull to protect him. What if he was crushed to death by a book, or cut to death by a page...
Li Yue didn't dare to think too much.
It had to be said that among Mentor's Blessings, "Rebellion" was the one Li Yue hated the most.
So Li Yue lay down like this, fell asleep, and was repeatedly awakened by inexplicable twitches in his brain, finally enduring until the "Rebellion" state disappeared, and prepared to go to the library hall to embrace knowledge.
It was worth mentioning that Li Yue was once awakened during his light sleep by the influence of "Attention," as if he was being watched by a prehistoric beast.
At that moment, Li Yue thought that the Brain Spirit Master, Budi Boge, had returned in triumph and was peeking at him sleeping; but that existence didn't seem to be interested in skeletons, and didn't show any malice or any intention to communicate.
And Li Yue also remembered that during the Blood River simulation battle last night, Budi Boge should have participated in his first gladiator debut at Oogie Boogie's "invitation"—he didn't know how it went, and whether he could return safely...
What would happen to this library if the Brain Spirit Master died?
Li Yue thought about these random things, repeatedly confirming that he would no longer be affected by those three "negative" Blessings for the time being, and then returned to the original form of the Brain Spirit, found the direction to the lower level, and prepared to start the long-awaited knowledge "Absorption" work.
But halfway there, suddenly a great pressure enveloped Li Yue's whole body, completely locking him in.
It wasn't the "Attention" effect, but a real thought, and somewhat familiar...
The Brain Spirit Master, Budi Boge!
At the entrance of the seventh book room, it seemed that an irregular mass of sludge suddenly tore apart that space and crawled out with bared fangs and claws.
Why was it him? Why was it now? Why did he only think of it, and it returned?
Li Yue deeply felt the inconvenience of living under someone else's roof again—he had finally endured the Blessing, and was about to retrieve the "treasure" of the library, but he ran into Budi Boge again?
Tap... tap...
On the opposite side of the dim corridor, there was a faint sound of liquid dripping; a fishy smell permeated the air, like blood and brain fluid mixing together.
"Brain Spirit..." Budi Boge's voice was a little weak, and the transmitted thoughts were intermittent.
"You go... summon all the Brain Spirits... now..."
"Come here now... come to my side..."
