Chapter 18:Loose Ends
"The Special Ability Divisions (SADs) are military police bodies who regulate the paranormal and curb the excesses of Ability Users, control damages, and protect everyone from the dark sides of the new world."
YEAR: 2161
LOCATION: S.A.D BASE (Giga site) [UNKNOWN LOCATION]
"You can remove their covers now." A voice spoke.
Suddenly, the black veils used to cover the three boys were removed and the three of them squinted a bit as their eyes were exposed to light after several hours without. They had been taken away from the Underground passage, faces covered, into their vehicles, which was designed like the Waste Disposal's own. They were taken to an unknown location, however, due to communications, Darey discovered they were headed to the Giga site, one of the Nigerian black sites, location unknown.
Tenny and Darey looked around but couldn't see their father around. "He must be devastated" Darey thought "As expected..."
Frank stood by a corner, outside the interrogation room where the boys were kept. He couldn't face the boys, not as he was now. He had been shocked to say the least when he saw Darey and Tenny. They also recognized him, which made matters worse. He was still in recoil from the whole experience. After Darey had called him dad, he quickly acted and ordered the soldiers to check them for any arms, handcuff them, and cover their faces.
"What do I do now? Lara come quickly..." He thought frantically." It won't take long before their identities are discovered. Any moment from now..." Frank mumbled to himself.
"Special squad commander" A person said as they approached.
"Yes, who..." Frank's casual voice was suspended as he saw The Major General, head of all operations on Lagos state, and the second in command of the entire division, Major General Lanre Sanni.
"Sir!" Frank said as he saluted.
"At ease Commander" The Major said smiling. "I just got a notification that the classified Gate has been opened, and not only that, breached by a group of kids, Ability Users no doubt" Major General Lanre said, expecting a reply from the nervous and already troubled Captain.
"Y...Yes sir, they seem to be in their early teens, two dark skinned, one fair skinned. They are most likely Ability users, or at least one is." Frank spoke hesitantly.
"Something on your mind Special commander?" Major Lanre spoke.
"Well, they cooperated fully, and seeing as they are all kids, there's the possibility that they might have been coerced or ignorant of their actions, they might be innocent sir." Frank said, in an attempt to ease the already harsh consequences that awaited the boys.
"You may be right, however, until they are fully questioned and examined, we'll never know." The Major General said, rubbing his goatee. "All preparations should have already been made, why don't we step in and see what they have to say for themselves?" He said as he gestured Frank to lead the way to the Interrogation room.
"Sir?" Frank asked nervously "You'll be attending?"
"Definitely" The General said, not smiling. " The Gate in question is one capable of wiping out Lagos entirely, if not more. These kids messed with something of that magnitude, for whatever reason, it warrants my attention. Anything else?"
"My apologies sir, none." Frank realized he had not budged from his position, and not wanting to delay the Major General, he led the way to the room "Right this way sir."
Darey had been waiting for quite a while for someone to show up, but so far no one had entered, or left the room. The six officers positioned there remained within the room, surrounding them. "Any minute from now..." Darey spoke softly under his breath.
"We're in trouble aren't we?" Tenny asked Darey, as he looked at him scared stiff and worried.
"Maybe..." Darey spoke calmly. "Relax, this can't be as scary as those VampCyclops from a while back." He reassured him.
"That is different. If I had died then, it was my liability. But if we get into trouble here, with the government, I'm worried about mom and dad. They work here don't they?" Tenny pressed on. "It won't take them long to discover our connections to them, and then they'll also be labelled criminals, who almost caused mass killings and destruction." Tenny said, worry clearly written all over his face.
"Look, It's all..." Darey's words were interrupted by the opening of the door, which caused a strange cool air to blow into the rom, which seemed to be filled with stiffening and stagnated air. "Finally" he thought.
"Well well well, what do we have here?" The Major General entered the room smiling "You kids strayed a bit too far from home don't you think?"
"Well, it was just an underground passage bellow our street so..." Darey replied indifferently.
"So you live on Adele Street, what a coincidence. So does the Commander who arrested you today." The Major said as he directed his hands toward Commander Frank, whose hands were already behind him, looking nervous.
The Major continued, "I'll get straight to the point, and you'll do well to answer, what were you doing down there? How and why did you open up the Gate? What else did you do to the Gate to render it dysfunctional? And how much do you know about it, as well as everything else?"
Tenny looked worried and nervous as he turned to Darey to reply the overwhelming man before them. Kyron looked unimpressed and expressionless, waiting for an order from Darey. Darey smiled, happy things were going as planned.
"Sure, but before that, I'd rather prefer no one be here except us." Darey spoke up. "I'll tell you everything as long as you fulfill that condition."
"You bastard, how dare you? Do you know who you're speaking to?" One of the officers spoke out, obviously enraged.
"Stand down officer" The Major said, as the officer calmed down and apologized for his sudden outburst. Major General Lanre looked into Darey's eyes as both stared at each other for a while. He could tell the young lad was serious and so he decided to respond in kind.
"Fine, just me and you right?" The Major asked "What about your companions?"
"They'll also be excused. They've had a long night after all." Darey said.
"Fine" The older man replied. "Take the others to the auxiliary holding cell while i speak privately with this one" He said to the officers in the room as they immediately saluted and responded to his orders.
"What about me sir?" Commander Frank asked his superior.
"You'll take your leave as well. Make sure our conversation is not wired, i want total privacy." He replied Frank.
"B...But sir, your safety." Frank protested.
"The detainee is without any arms, and he is totally cornered. Even if he were to kill me, or worse, he wouldn't escape alive. A hostage situation won't work either because he can't undo our security measures. There's no need to be alarmed, besides, something tells me he won't try anything drastic." The Major said, urging Frank to leave them, which he did.
The door shut behind them, as the Major took a seat, separated from Darey by a table several inches in length. The older man in his sixties was curious, to say the least as well as anxious about what he was about to hear.
"We're alone, just as you wanted. Now spill... And don't try to stall. If i discover you're wasting my time, you'll suffer a far more deserving punishment than the initial." Major Lanre said.
"I understand fully well" Darey said. "Now as for what happened, it goes thus."
"We were just taking a stroll around our street, our parents weren't home, so it was our chance to break curfew and run wild. We noticed something in the Dump at that moment and before we realized what was going on, we were brought underground. We were still recoiling from the shock when we saw a light glow coming from within the passage. Thinking it was an exit, we went further and saw the Gate. Unaware of what it was, my brother reached out to touch it, and suddenly he Awakened his ability and accidentally removed the barrier covering the Gate, making it fully functional. The Gate then sucked us into it, and it wasn't till after a while before we found a way out. As we stepped out, we were surrounded by your agents, which brings us to where we are at this point..." Darey finished, still smiling.
"Are you for real?" The Major said, clearly annoyed. "Is this a joke to you? You expect me to believe this nonsense?" He slammed the desk between them.
"I believe I told you the consequences of wasting my time. I hope you're ready to face it" The Major angrily said as he stood and headed toward the door.
"Major, relax... I wasn't done" Darey called calmly.
"What did you just say?" The Major looked back, furious at his disrespectful use of words and casual approach. "Just who does he think he is?" He thought.
"All I have said is what happened..." Darey started "At least, that's what you're going to tell your agents out there, as well as your superiors or anyone it may concern." Darey paused.
The General turned back and moved towards Darey. He sat back down, interlocked his fingers while still looking angry, and said "And why would I ever do that?"
"Because I'm going to tell you what really happened, and then offer you a deal." Darey said.
"Well, you could try that... But it won't work." Darey said, smiling. "Though if you want your officers to know about your secret deal with the Emir, as well as your relationship with the Senator, not to talk of your countless corrupt practices and fraudulent activities, along with proof, you can try it." He said, with absolute confidence.
"H...How do you know about those?" The Major suddenly flared, and quickly waved it away. "Are you seriously threatening an officer of the Law, especially one of such standing as myself? What proof do you have?" He asked, trying to turn the tables.
"Say what you will, but my COMPLETE INVESTIGATION sees through all your façade. Even right now, you're thinking of how to do away with the evidence in the secret safe within your private quarters, behind the wall adjacent to your reading desk. The passcode is 133398740, with another password of 465009." Darey said, revealing the futility of him feigning ignorance.
"W...What? How did you?" The Major spoke, now panicking.
"If I decide to let this get known to the officers, there'll be serious repercussions. You can try to run home and swiftly destroy the evidence, but I'd have completed the deed by then. You can try to place a phone call and arrange for the evidence to be destroyed, but all calls here are monitored, besides, there really isn't anyone you can call on such short notice to safely eliminate with such an important matter. You could try discrediting me, but I'll have you know that an investigation will still be conducted into you, given the details of what I know. After all, you can't possibly know all the dirt I have on you." Darey answered, clearly enjoying himself and getting comfortable.
"Y...You said there was a deal..?" The Major said, as his voice fell, and his face looked downcast.
"Now that's what I like to hear." Darey said. "I knew i could get through to you."
"What do you want?" The Major finally asked.
"It's simple, I want you to register the three of us in the Index for ability users, but not at the present date. I want us to have been registered exactly 9 years ago." Darey said.
"B...But if that had been the case, you'd have been in the Special Ability Academy since then, but you must have had normal education till now." The Major protested.
"There's no need to panic. Special operatives possess the privilege to still keep their children until a certain age, when it becomes inevitable to leave for the Academy. I'll be capitalizing on that." Darey responded.
"That means... You are...?" The Major said, shocked.
"Indeed, my parents work in this department, they're also your subordinates. Now enough idle talk, can you make it happen?" Darey switched back to the commanding tone.
"Yes, I can do that... Is that all?" The Major asked obediently.
"I also want a comrade of mine, the fair one, to have a completely registered profile Nationally and at the state level. Birth Certificate, passport, and all essentials that enables him to live a normal life as a Nigerian citizen." Darey said.
"That would take a little time, but I should be able to do it." The Major squeaked.
"I want it within three days." Darey commanded.
"Y...Yes, I understand…" The Major answered.
"Finally, I want no further investigation into our identities, as well as our involvement in the case of the Gate. Any sort of interference with my personal life and I will totally ruin you, understand?" Darey spoke, with a tone of finality.
"Yes, I understand." The Major said.
"Good, oh, and yeah... Make sure to give Commander Frank, and Special Agent Lara a raise and a promotion okay?" Darey said smiling.
"Definitely." The Major answered without asking about his involvement with them, though he already had a faint idea as to it.
"I was going to tell you what really happened, but I've changed my mind. Stick with the narrative I gave you, and alter it a bit to suit the situations as they arise. I'll now tell you the specifics for my directives, as well as my exact instructions and how they'll be carried out. Take notes" Darey said, as he was ready to fully explain what he wanted, and how he wanted it done. As he had expected, this would be easy.
After thoroughly dealing with the matter at hand, they would finally be able to begin the next phase of his plan. There was no room for error, or everything would unravel.
"Now, for the next step" Darey said as the Major wrote down his every word.
