Chapter 36:Curtains Fall
YEAR: 2161
LOCATION: Currently Unknown
The darkness made everything barely visible, for the most part anyway. The house of Major General Lanre, however, even the entire compound was greatly illuminated. The darkness was barely evident there. The security was tight, there was even extra for the night.
Major Lanre sat in his very large office, in his very large house. Due to The Reaper's job, he was busy tying up loose ends and making himself busy with work. This way he wouldn't seem the list bit suspicious since he had no ties to the incident. Plus, the SAD Agency kept him updated on the happenings and situation of the matter.
"Hehehehehe" Major Lanre chuckled to himself.
He knew it was only a matter of time before he would get a call from The Reaper, telling him the usual thing he heard
"It's Done."
"You shouldn't have crossed me Darey! Hahahahaha" He laughed to himself.
He was feeling very good this night. He looked outside his window, showing the activities that went on in his compound. The security was more than usual, and for good reason.
Though he had no doubt in The Reaper's capabilities, he was still a very meticulous man. He had a backup plan. Even if Darey managed to defeat the Reaper, his energy would be entirely whittled down. If he tried anything funny... He would die!
As he gazed satisfactorily, smiling to himself and satisfied with how things ended, he suddenly heard a sound which he wasn't expecting to hear.
"You seem to be in a good mood." Darey said suddenly, smiling.
Major General Lanre, who was initially shocked to hear the voice of Darey, calmed down. He smiled, then turned away from the window and faced Darey, who stood at a corner of the big office, close to the entrance.
"I take it The Reaper failed." Major General Lanre said calmly.
"Yep. You seem pretty calm, color me surprised... I mean, all things considered." Darey said.
"Why shouldn't I be. Though I'm surprised you managed to finish him off, he was merely a tool in the end. I had already prepared countermeasures for a situation like this. Ultimately, it's my win!" Major Lanre remarked.
"Haha, wow. Who would've seen that coming? A backup plan... Against me?!" Darey said with a surprised laugh.
"You don't need to put up a front. I know how you must be feeling right now. A fight with The Reaper? You must be physically and mentally exhausted right now. In fact, I'm sure you're using the last bit of your energy to stand right now." Major Lanre said with a smile.
Suddenly, Darey's face clouded up, and his smile turned into a scowl.
"Seems I was right. Even though I don't know your real Special Ability, I know it will be quite a formidable one. In fact, it must have been really good , for you to have beaten my top dog. But..." The Major said, leaning his body to the front.
"Such great abilities come at a price. The Energy output and consumption is vast. Calculating the moment your battle would have begun until now... There's no doubt... You're running on fumes." He added.
"How can you be so sure... So confident." Darey said, still frowning.
"Oh, I've been researching Special Abilities for decades now. I've experienced quite a lot of things. It comes with age. Such a top position which I possess isn't given to just anyone, you know" Major Lanre said.
Darey remained silent.
"Here's what's going to happen. You have two choices. One, you become my new dog, and I leave your family alone. I'll also spare your life, so that's something. You'll leave the life you've always known and come to the shadows. You'll do my dirty work from now on." Major Lanre said.
"What if I refuse?" Darey asked.
"You DIE!" Major Lanre said, bringing out a remote with only one button on it.
Darey's eyes lit up in surprise.
"Curious? It's a little something I've cooked up. Immediately I press this button, It'll immediately alert all security personnel to immediately come to this area. They'll apprehend you, torture you... And make sure your entire family dies in front of you, before I finally kill you myself." Major General Lanre said with a smile.
"I could kill you before they show up." Darey mentioned.
"I doubt it." Major General Lanre said.
Suddenly, a glass-like wall fell from the ceiling, separating Lanre from Darey. The wall was transparent, and so they could both see themselves, however, Lanre was on one side, and Darey was on the other.
"This wall is made up of a mineral that interferes with Special Abilities. And contrary to how it looks it's dense as hell! There's no way you're getting past that without any Special Ability backing you up. Let's also not forget that you're at your limits. You can try leaving this building, but the door is laced with a similar material. You can't escape." Major Lanre said.
Darey looked around the room, then stared hard the Major General.
"So, what will it be kid?" Major Lanre asked, smirking.
"You..." Darey said, his face squeezing even tighter and tighter and then...
"Hahahahahahahahaha" Darey burst out in laughter. "Oh, I can't hold it anymore." He said, still laughing uncontrollably.
The Major General looked confused.
"I get why that guy got so much pleasure from this Ability. I mean... Knowing what happens and just living through it... That's just too amusing." Darey said, smiling, and wiping tears in his eyes which had formed from him laughing too much.
"What are you talking about?" Major Lanre said, visibly getting nervous.
"Truthfully speaking, I'm not exhausted... At all! I still have over 90 percent of my energy, so that means you were wrong about that. There's also the fact that the button you're so proud of... It won't work. Also, those stupid walls aren't a challenge for me. As for the armed men you have stationed outside... Maybe you should check on them again." Darey said.
Major General Lanre looked out the window, and saw all his security guards standing perfectly still, not moving a muscle.
"ABSOLUTE SUSPENSION. It's an Ability I possess. It allows me to place my targets in a dreamlike trance while their bodies stay still. To your men, they're still busy patrolling the compound. There goes your backup." Darey said, smiling hard.
"Wha...? No way! Still, you can't get to me. Your Special Ability won't work" Major General Lanre said, trying to convince himself.
"About that. It's true that my Special Ability won't work on this wall. But who says I need to use it?" Darey said with a smile.
The Major General's confidence was fading away, he might actually lose.
"Y-You're bluffing. It's impossible. You're bluffing!!!" He yelled.
"Well, long story short... You're screwed!" Darey said with a smile, to the horror of Major Lanre.
Darey suddenly moved toward the wall of glass before him, which separated the Major's side from his, within the blink of an eye. He raised his fist, and then hit the wall. The impact caused a sonic boom, which shattered the entire glass and shook the entire room.
"Gahhhhh.... Urghhhh.... Ahhh...." Major General Lanre yelled in pain.
A fracture of the shattered wall had pierced his lap, the impact was so great that the edge of the glass material exited his skin on the other side. It was too deep in for him to remove by himself, and the pain was too unbearable.
"Y-You... How...?!" Major Lanre yelled, his eyes widening in surprise and pain.
Darey moved closer to the Major, leaving his position. He smiled, walking slowly and steadily, while the Major looked in fright, holding the window railings behind him while trying to find an escape, but seeing none.
"I believe I gave you a warning Major... I told you, any sort of interference with my personal life and I would totally ruin you." Darey said, with a tone of foreboding.
"I-I..." The Major General couldn't mouth his words well, he shrieked a bit, looking around the room to find an escape.
"Yet, not only did you interfere... You almost had me, as well as my entire family, killed. Unforgiveable..." Darey said, still walking closer.
"I-I had no choice! He threatened me! Please!" Major General Lanre pleaded, his eyes gleamed with desperation.
"Who...?" Darey asked.
"I-I can't say..." Major Lanre said suddenly and hesitantly, he had blurted out something he shouldn't have.
"That's because you don't know anything. I've used COMPLETE INVESTIGATION on you. I basically know all I need to know. You have good information, just not deep enough. Besides, if this man you speak of is who I think he is... He'll show up eventually." Darey said.
"Now... Shall we get back to the matter at hand?" Darey said with a smile.
"Please... I'll do anything. I'll give you anything. Please." Major Lanre said desperately.
Tears were already formed in his eyes, and drool dripped from his mouth. Mucus was also flowing from his nose, and Darey could see the man was nearly broken.
"Nearly... But not YET." Darey said to himself.
Darey crouched before Major Lanre, took his hands toward the shard of hardened glass and removed it sharply.
"Garrrrhaaaaahahaaaah" Major Lanre screamed in pain.
"HEALER'S WISH." Darey said.
White light enveloped Major Lanre, healing his wounds and calming him down.
Major Lanre was surprised at this sight, but immediately realized that Darey had given him another chance. He wouldn't waste it.
"T-Thank y-you... Thank you..." Major Lanre said gratefully, he was relieved.
"Why are you thanking me?" Darey asked in surprise.
"B-But... Y-You...." Major Lanre said, confused.
"I couldn't let you jest get done in like that... Don't worry..." Darey smiled, hinting a dark glow in his eyes.
"...The fun is just beginning." Darey said sadistically.
The sounds of screaming and horror and pain filled the entire room. The entire compound was even filled with the Major's screams of help, plea and immense pain. But there was no one to hear him.
