Into the Zombie World

Chapter 3: Inside the Grocery Store

Reaching the door of the store, Nile extends his hand to reach and pull the handle, sliding himself inside. He then closes the door to prevent any zombies outside from coming in, or from hearing anything if something ever happens inside.

Nile slumped to the ground and breathed heavily; feeling himself much weaker than before. Glancing around the store, Nile was frozen still by what he saw. The store is messy; stalls no longer standing; the supposed goods were no longer there. All that greeted him was empty shelves, void of any food.

'Damn it' Nile curses inwardly as he suddenly realized that this was indeed something he had overlooked before.

Not all the people here are as cowardly, or as dumb as the former 'Nile'. They must have realized that during the apocalypse, food would be scarce and hence, important. Those people would probably have already fished out all the food inside the store before escaping. He could literally imagine just what sort of chaos this small grocery store experienced during that time.

But not giving up, Nile musters his last bit of strength to stand up and scan through the store with his eyes.

Although this store is considerably small, it was actually bigger than his room or house earlier. The inside of the store is squarish; and very messy as there is trash everywhere.

Fortunately, Nile wasn't destined to be further disappointed as he quickly spotted a packet of uncooked noodles wedged right under one of the stalls that had collapsed. This packet of noodles was akin to shining gold in the eyes of the famished Nile.

Nile immediately rummaged through and pulled the noodles out of its packaging. Without even boiling water, Nile gobbles up the dried noodles as he could no longer endure the hunger.

But this also raised a problem because it has been four days since he had water. His mouth and throat were already so dry that he felt he no longer have any saliva left. And because of this, he struggled to swallow every small piece of the dried noodles.

Glancing around yet again, he notices that at the very corner of the counter, lay a coffee vending machine standing upright, making his eyes lit up. Nile approaches the counter and coffee vending machine hurriedly.

Circling towards the back of the coffee vending machine, he pulls the back cover up. The water inside the gallon is still half full.

Nile pulled the gallon of water out of the coffee vending machine, but due to his little strength, the gallon fell straight to the floor. Water gushed out from the mouth of the gallon. Nile now no longer cared. Dirty or not, it was water, and he had to drink it. He kneeled on the floor, and like a thirsty dog, he drinks the water gushing out from the gallon's mouth and licked the waters that had spilled onto the floor.

After satisfying himself, he then picks the dried noodles back up to continue gobbling it down. Nile soon finishes the entire packet of noodles, panting as he leaned his back on one of the collapsed stalls.

After resting for a bit, Nile slowly felt his energy was returning. His stomach, though aching, was no longer screaming for food.

Nile stood up glanced around the room. Because he was in a state of hunger before, he did not have the luxury of time to inspect the inside of the store more thoroughly.

Now, glancing around the store, he notices that there were a total of five stalls inside. Four of which were lying on the floor; the packet of noodles earlier was under the first stall near the door. The remaining one was the furthest but was the only stall left standing.

On the counter, Nile searches for a handbag that he can still use. He then proceeded towards the rest of the stalls picking the leftover goods that he could possibly find.

Although some people still had the rationality to gather food, the panic inside them must always be present because after searching every corner of the store, the handbag that Nile got from the counter earlier is now slightly full.

Inside the handbag, there are four canned goods, three packs of noodles, a pack of biscuit with twelve pieces inside, one bottle of 1-liter water, and a 1-foot long bread. But this bread was already moldy, so Nile decided to abandon it.

Going back to the counter, Nile sat on the chair that was inside. This chair must be the one the teller sat on while dealing with the customer before the apocalypse happened.

With some food in his hand, Nile decided to eat again, as what he ate before was a mere packet of noodles, which was obviously not enough to satiate his hunger.

He wolfed down a can of canned goods and three pieces of biscuits. Although he still wasn't full, without a stable source of food, he could only eat them sparingly. He knew that this amount of food can only last him for a few days, even if he only eats once a day.
