Chapter 17: I want to drink a Starbucks Soy Latte, but I don’t have the mouth or stomach for it

Don’t you want me to get well?

A beautiful girl says.

“Onee-chan, she hasn’t given up on becoming a Titan pilot yet. Once you’re cured, I’m sure she’ll volunteer for the National Defense Force. But the National Defense Force is a very dangerous job. No matter how many houses you have in the city center, you might die. That’s why I don’t want you to get cured.”

I see, that’s what you mean. I understand. But there was nothing I could do about it. Since I couldn’t even move my limbs, I couldn’t control my own regeneration.

The beautiful girl giggled.

“I hate it when you say these things. Don’t worry about it. I’m just talking to myself. I’m used to talking to myself because I often wait at home alone while Onee-chan is at work.”

The beautiful girl sneezed prettily as the wind whistled through the disposal area.

She rewrapped her tattered scarf around her neck, shrugged, and buried herself in her coat.

“Is there anything you want to be, Titan-san?”

There is. I want to be human again.

When I return to Earth, I want to order a tall soy latte at the Starbucks in Shiki Station, the station closest to my home.

“I’d also like to travel. Of course, I am too weak now to go to the next phone line. But when I grow up, I’d like to visit the Empire someday. Do you know it? The Empire.

I’ve heard of it. Dostoyev was talking about the Empire attacking the surrounding countries.

“The Empire is the largest country in the world. Legend has it that there is a much larger country about 300,000 kilometers away, but as far as I know, the Empire is the largest. The Empire has a botanical garden and a vegetable factory. Can you believe it? It’s raw vegetables, not the synthetic nutrient plates we eat. There are 30  reactors and not a speck of snow on the roads. The population is 5 million. Can you believe that? It’s a hundred times the size of this city.”

What is it? What is it now? 300,000 kilometers from here?

That’s bigger than the diameter of the Earth.

I must have misheard.

The beautiful girl continued her story.

“My sister and I aren’t from this city, we’re survivors of the wanderers that attacked this city ten years ago. Our parents didn’t have Titans, so we were just easily crushed by the Titans here.

No, I don’t hold a grudge. They would have killed or eaten us even as children, but they let us go because we were so small. We were also allowed to live outside the city walls as quasi-citizens. However, my sister and I were always outsiders. To the people of this city, we are “outsiders”.

That’s why I want to go to the empire; I think with five million people there, I can live as a normal human being.

She often says to herself.

“I want to live as a citizen of the Empire.”

“That’s sweet,” a woman’s voice came into the room. “Even the Empire has limited heating and food. We can’t afford to have people without power as citizens.”

It was Alisha. She approached me, wiping her forehead with a towel like a rag.

It seems it’s time for her to go home.

“It’s a tough world, Riga. You have to be strong to follow your dreams. You need strength to follow your dreams, and you need strength to protect them. Like a gun in your hand.”

“Onee-chan! Thanks for another great day!”

Riga ran up to Alisha.

When Alisha nodded her head, she picked up the gun and checked the spinning magazine.

“You haven’t shot it. I told you to practice in your spare time, didn’t I? According to ancient texts, guns need to be trained.”

“Because, you know, I’m scared. Because I’m afraid it’s going to explode.”

“No, they fire bullets in small explosions. Gunpowder, made from metal powder, is vulnerable to cold and moisture and is no longer used as a weapon, but it can still be used in warmer cities.”

“But you’re hurting someone.”

Alisha grabbed Riga by the shoulders.

“Your enemies will not be kind to you if you are kind to them. I can’t protect you all the time.”

Riga yelped.

Alisha sighed and rolled up the sleeves of her coat.

“Well, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Your Onee-chan is going to have to regenerate this child. Oh my goodness, they tore him to pieces, didn’t they? This is going to take some time.”
