Chapter 19: Titan entrails are a feast for the eyes
My restoration proceeded slowly.
The passage of time can be judged by the daily life cycle of Alisha and Riga.
By the time the two of them had slept and woke up twenty times, my internal organs were almost formed.
Liver, spleen, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Each organ was quite different from the human organs I knew.
The liver was unusually large for my size, with many strange tubes sticking out of it. The stomach was shaped like a series of five balls, and the large intestine was just a short tube about the size of the duodenum.
If it hadn’t been for the kidney-like “specifications” on the surface, I wouldn’t have been able to determine what kind of organ it was.
While the colon was being sutured, Alisha said to the director who was peeking over the edge of the open-air bath.
“Why are there so many Titan organs coming out one after another? They’re damaged, but not to the point of being unusable.”
The director took out what looked like a candy bar from his coat pocket and threw it into his mouth.
“That’s because our Titans are very active. They’ve defeated so many enemies that they have an excess of stock.”
“But that doesn’t mean that the guts of the Titans aren’t a feast for the eyes.”
“The bigwigs in the city council have expressed interest in your plan, and if you can indeed recreate a Titan from the wreckage, that would be huge.”
“But how could those bigwigs know about a lowly person like me?
“It’s because I let him know; you’re a woman who could be the hope of all the lower classes.”
At that moment, a gong sounded on the city wall bordering the processing plant, announcing the approach of the enemy.
This has been happening almost once a day since I arrived here.
When I was in the hangar, it was about once a week, so the number has increased considerably.
Beyond the processing plant, I saw three giants charging down the main street, shaking the ground.
Leading the way was a small, fat machine with blue armor, a new version of Dostoyev’s machine that he had taken parts from me to finish.
I could faintly hear the cheers of the citizens.
The director, the workers at the processing plant, and the children picking up the trash all raised their hands to the gray sky. Alisha also raised a small hand. I couldn’t see much of Riga in the tent.
About ten minutes later, the sound of huge metal clashing could be heard from behind the city walls.
Alisha said.
“If I do say so myself, the garrison led by Captain Dostoyev is strong. It is even known in the neighboring cities. I wonder if the people who are attacking us are suicidal.”
The director shrugged his shoulders and said.
“They’re also in dire need of help. Every year it gets colder and colder, and the ten thousand square kilometers around here are becoming uninhabitable. And all the people around us are coming under attack at once. There is a rare reactor here. For them, it’s their last hope for survival.”
Alisha had a complicated look on her face.
It was no surprise that she and Riga’s parents had also attacked here and lost.
She said.
“What about the people who sent the Titans here and lost?”
“For small cities, mobile cities, and nomads, Titans are the most important ‘livestock’, ‘machine tools and ‘weapons’. Their cultivated flesh provides food and is essential for digging snow caves. However, it takes a lot of people and a lot of heat to maintain a “Titan”. The number that can be maintained is probably limited to one or two per group. If we lose those tiger cubs…
We’ll have nothing to eat and will starve to death one by one. They might be able to live a little by eating the corpses, but without the Titans, they wouldn’t be able to protect themselves from the cold.
The number of members of the group will dwindle down, and they will either fall prey to other groups or be buried in the snow without anyone finding them. Oh, I don’t even want to think about it.”
The director’s huge body shook.
For a while, the city was in the midst of a “bountiful catch” of Titans.
Enemies came incessantly, and fresh meat was supplied incessantly.
The temperature was high, and the regeneration of the Titans as food was going well, and several times after that, Riga made roast beef.
Then came a tremendous cold snap, and the city starved violently.
