[Mystery Bystander]

“What are you after?!”

《The One Who Knows the Truth of This World》kept provoking me without showing herself. I shouted into the darkness of the night to uncover her true identity.

“Hey, calm down. There is no need to get so agitated, is there?”

She dismissed me, unmoved.

But I couldn’t just back down.

If–if she was planning to harm someone close to me, I’d do everything in my power to stop her. With that kind of determination, I pulled out the Holy Sword.

In response to my preparing for battle,《The One Who Knows the Truth of This World》, hidden in the dark night, spoke with a slightly troubled tone, “I suppose it is too much to ask you to not be so cautious against me. But allow me to say this. I’m not your enemy, nor your ally—for now, at least.”

“What?”

“I’ve no desire to change this world like you. Ah, but I am rooting for you.”

She sure fancied slipping in nuances in her lines.

Not an enemy or ally.

If I were to take her words at face value, she was positioning herself as a third party at this moment. There seemed to be no doubt that she was a reincarnated person like me… but she didn’t intend to get directly involved in the storyline of this world.

Did that mean that she wasn’t a main character in [The Rise of the Weakest Sacred Swordsman]?

I knew the future of Barrett Albers, whom I had reincarnated into. It was bad, to say the least; though, he had it coming, to be fair. Hence, I had been doing my best to change it.

It wasn’t only for my sake, but also for Tayte’s, who in the original novel ended up fading into obscurity after becoming a member of Raul’s harem. I wanted to have a happy future with her.

This past year… the bond between me and Tayte had grown deeper and stronger.

And we were heading into a significantly different future from the original novel.

While she said she wouldn’t get in my way for now… I had no idea when she would change her mind. I mean, how could you trust the words of someone who wouldn’t even show her face?

“…I see you don’t believe me.”

She sensed my doubt, it seemed.

“If you want me to trust you, why don’t you first stop hiding and introduce yourself?”

“But that would ruin the fun we are having. I’d do that another time.”

She wouldn’t budge, huh?

It seemed that she wouldn’t show her face for now no matter what.

“Aren’t you a little too selfish?”

“Hey, that’s uncalled for. Anyway, I’ll be sure to visit you again in the near future, so until then… please enjoy your life in this world. Don’t you go and get killed in action.”

“K-killed in action? What do you mean?!”

There was no answer. Seemed like she had left.

“Dammit!”

In the end, I didn’t get any important information.

At least, she was apparently not hostile to me for now… though whether or not that was true, I couldn’t say. Even now, somewhere, she might be plotting to get my head.

At that time, the sound of a bell resounded as if to cut through the silence of the night.

It was the signal that the ball was over.

“…I’ve got to go back.”

And so, my final ball in the academy ended, leaving behind some mysteries. But at least, no synthetic monster appeared.
