Lady Misfortune: Daddy, I'll Be A Righteous Villainess!
Chapter 17 - A Mysterious Character
Lady has to admit, though – there is something about Fallon that draws her in.
For some reason, and in some way, he stands out. Not only is he already this good-looking at such a young age, but he also has this air around him that's giving her the impression that he's significant to the plot. It's strange because she doesn't even know him that well - not as a person nor as a character in her story.
"For someone who was merely picked up from who knew where – the dumpster, perhaps, you were not as bad as most of us were expecting you would be…" Fallon went on to comment, shoving his hands in his pockets as he walked closer to Lady who reacted offended but only kept quiet.
"Or, at least, that was what our relatives had been saying the whole night. You have caused quite the stir. Everyone kept talking about you. Then again, you are Uncle Max's daughter."
Now that he is talking with her again – with only the two of them this time, she takes a moment to recall the kind of role this particular character has in her story. Though she remembers his father and what he is meant to do in the near future, she really does not remember writing anything about him.
'Let's see. Fallon Mireille, huh? Could he be the male lead…?' Lady began to ponder, regarding Fallon contemplatively.
'He kinda gives off that vibe. But I don't think he is. I'm not even sure if I ever made a love interest for the heroine. Sure, she has lots of admirers, but I think she's too young to officially go out with anyone at the end of the story – or maybe, I'm just too young to know what it's like to date a guy.'
In addition to that, Sarah is his future step-cousin. So, she doubts Fallon is an ideal candidate for the male lead. Rather than that, Lady thinks that having a 'big brother' role fits him more.
"You're too on guard. I'm not going to bite you or anything. You don't have to worry, either. I won't tell anyone that you snuck out," he spoke once more when the silence between them dragged on for too long.
"What do you want from me? Are you here to pick up where those three left off?" she asked with a sharp look, still a little wary despite his reassurance.
"Those three? Oh, you mean our cousins."
"Yeah. Those jerks."
"You really don't hold back with your words, do you?"
"I am merely saying the truth. They really are jerks."
"Right, I see. You've got guts to say it. Good thing you didn't offend Grandmother with that bluntness of yours earlier. I still couldn't believe that she let you off the hook just like that."
"Why? You think the truth always hurts? Are we only allowed to say pleasant things all the time? Even if they are lies?"
Fallon fell silent then, having noticed the hint of sarcasm in her words. Judging by how Lady keeps looking at him dubiously, he supposes she is not up for a conversation.
'Oh, I see,' he then thought, coming to a realization.
That must be the reason why she snuck out in the first place – to avoid this kind of confrontation, to have some time for herself. It also showed when she brought up their cousins. Clearly, she has not moved on from their bullying earlier, and he does not expect her to.
For a moment, the two of them only stare at each other in silence - with her waiting for his response, and him thinking of one.
"Yes. That's right…" then came Fallon's reply eventually, taking Lady aback.
"Most of the time, us, Mireille's, do have to lie to please others."
