Last Days On Earth
Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Changes (2)
All sorts of pleading echoed on the ground and outside the dormitory hall. Many pleaded help, some bargained, while others threatened.
As more and more gathered in the front entrance of the dormitory building, they cried desperately for help. No matter the effort, they couldn’t get in. And though the front entrance was made of glass, they could not break it so. No matter how many times they bumped on the wall or break it, it would not crack or break.
Ye Ke saw Han Song’s face among the crowds. He groaned and ran back inside the room and quickly tore down the curtains. He hurriedly twisted them together and sealed the ends of the curtain with a tape.
“Han Song!” Ye Ke let out a loud roar and threw the twisted curtain down.
Many saw Ye Ke’s intent and hurriedly rushed to the twisted curtain. Han Song who was squeezed tightly in the middle of the crowd could not move. But much to their dismay, those nearest to the twisted curtain were unable to reach the curtain. They couldn’t jump high. At this moment, they looked just like a grasshopper in a cage. Ye Ke had not expected many would vie to reach the curtain. He only wanted to pull Han Song up in a hurry. He hadn’t considered the height of the floor. His room was on the second floor and was about seven or eight meters high from the ground floor and the twisted curtain was only five meters long.
Shortly after, a dozen or so of those horrific monsters pounced on the students attempting to reach the twisted curtain.
Han Song looked at Ye Ke meaningfully for a short second before turning around to flee without hesitation.
The crowd suddenly realizing the situation turn upside down screamed and quickly scattered. The slow and unlucky ones were thrown to the ground, their flesh torn apart.
Only then did Ye Ke had the opportunity to observe these terrifying monsters at close range
Their complexions were pale. Blood clung to their dry skin and stained their clothes. They pounced on those nearest to them and tore their flesh apart without mercy. They didn’t care much for their scream or futile struggle. All they wanted was their flesh. All they wanted was to tear them apart. All they wanted was to feast on them.
It was a massacre. A bloodbath filled the entirety of the whole ground and Ye Ke suddenly felt nauseous while his hands and feet grew cold.
“….How could this happen?”
Ye Ke looked away after a while and leaned against the balcony door as he looked at Wang Hao who was wrapped in a quilt. Though filled with fear and trembling time to time, he managed to calm down.
A light bulb flashed in Ye Ke’s mind. He suddenly thought of something. He grabbed the phone on the table and dialed a number. But after waiting a long time, he hadn’t heard the voice he wished to hear and the call went straight to voicemail.
“It’s useless. The tower signal’s probably flooding with endless incoming calls. I tried calling mother to ask for money this morning and it wouldn’t go through.” After slightly recovering from the psychological trauma, Wang Hao replied softly and pulled off the quilt covering him.
The screams from the outside faded into nothingness. The surroundings were eerie quiet. He felt nothing had happened thus far apart from distant screams from afar.
“Where are the others?”
“I don’t know. I wasn’t in the examination room with them. I was on the second floor while they were on the fourth.” Wang Hao hugged his head painfully. A splitting headache came through him.
He transferred from another department due to changing majors and hence did not take the test with them.
“Ye Ke… you don’t know… I was answering questions at the time. Then… then we found out something was wrong with our invigilator. He threw himself on the ground. Foam was coming out and he twitched like crazy. We didn’t know what was happening. We looked around anxiously not sure what to do. Because he was dead. It was fucked up… We were about to call for help b-bu-but then he jumped up and suddenly grabbed the person next to him and bit him on the neck. The person… the person he grabbed and ate was sitting right next to me…” Wang Hao teared up, unable to contain the welling emotion and fear.
Ye Ke changed from a pajama to casual clothings. Thereafter, he pulled out a cigarette, sat next to Wang Hao, and passed him a smoke before lighting the two cigarettes up. Soon, smoke filled the air and the familiar scent of the cigarette lingered in the air.
Beautiful flower… he wonders if she’s alright. He wonders if the girl he left in the cold night managed to escape or became a pile of minced meat.
Thinking so, he felt a splitting headache.
