Chapter 10 - Newlyweds

Amber had not a single bit of desire in wishing for him to be affectionate. What she wanted was only to carry out the duty and responsibility as his wife.

“With the signing of the document, Your Excellency and I have officially become husband and wife.”

“That’s right,” Kalix replied in a heavy and slow tone as if his tongue had turned into a stone.

“But how do you think I will be treated if you leave the castle without even spending the first night with me?”

Kalix’s face twisted in confusion at Amber’s question.

“What do you mean, how you would be treated? Who in the world would use the fact that I was absent as a chance to harass you in any way?”

Amber was shocked by his reply.

‘He doesn’t know what would happen if he leaves the castle?’ She studied Kalix’s expression, but it remained the same without a single change.

Though he was a cold and calculative person with few words to spare, he was not someone who would lie.

Whenever he was troubled, he would simply keep his mouth shut. She clearly remembered from the numerous times she nearly went crazy just how much she suffered because of that in her previous life. Therefore, Amber knew more than anyone else after enduring ten years of his silence that he was someone who would not lie.

But…

‘No, there’s no way he wouldn’t know.’ Amber shook her head.

No matter how much she thought it through, it didn’t make sense that he wouldn’t know what would happen if he were to be absent. “Your Excellency, I am talking about duty and responsibility.”

The shadow on Kalix’s face darkened as he lowered his gaze. “As stated in the contract, I’ve given you everything that was written. Of course, you might not be satisfied with goods from the Eastern land as someone who grew up in a rich family, but…”

At Kalix’s words, Amber’s expression also stiffened. “Your Excellency, I think you’re misunderstanding something here, but I am not here to whine or beg.” Her tone of voice was sharp at the slight to her pride.

Hearing Amber snap back, Kalix flinched as if he were actually stabbed by a spear. He stared at Amber with an anxious expression.

“I don’t particularly care about the fact that you’ve omitted the ceremony. It’s fine that you didn’t come to the bedchamber either. I’m sure that Your Excellency didn’t find this marriage to be preferable, after all.”

“No, wait, that’s…” Kalix was about to say something but Amber shook her head.

“I have no wish for a perfect little husband and wife relationship. Even so, we cannot just live as complete strangers. Is that not right?”

Amber didn’t realize this in her previous life until it was too late.

No matter how much she didn’t want to see him and no matter how bad their relationship was, as long as he was her husband, she couldn’t pretend he didn’t exist.

She was sure that this was true for Kalix as well.

“Then why is it that you’ve come to see me?” Crossing his arms at his chest, Kalix asked with a smaller voice than before.

“First, I am here to denounce you for leaving the castle for such a long period of time without even telling me first.”

“The reason why I’m leaving to battle is to subjugate the mons…”

“Is it not because you’re trying to run away because you don’t like the marriage?”

He blushed lightly at Amber’s reply. She thought it might have just been her imagination because of the candlelight, but it wasn’t. His face and cheeks were definitely red.

As her husband sat there quietly without saying anything, Amber spoke one by one with everything she knew about the monster subjugation. The fact that the monster wave was extremely small, and that the monsters had a guarded nature so there wasn’t a need for him to go into battle with them.

“How is it that you know of all this?” Kalix couldn’t hide his surprise at Amber’s words and asked.

“I’ve learned a few things through my father’s information network before coming to the Eastern Lands.”
