Chapter 2 – Contradiction

The final exam was going to be held soon. Thus, the students in the second year of high school were all busy with their studies in order to reach a higher starting point for their upcoming third year. Everyone was busy, excluding Gao Yifeng. Some people were born with an above average IQ and were able to score absolutely powerful grades without much effort. Many teachers were too lazy to even care about such students as they couldn’t be controlled anyways. Their only hope was that these geniuses would not bring down the morale of other students.

And during this time, Gao Yifeng had skipped the self-study class in order to play basketball with the special students in sports. One of the special students took the opportunity to introduce a girlfriend for Gao Yifeng. Gao Yifeng grabbed the basketball, breathing heavily as he laughed while saying, “Brother, I hold your good intention in mind, but I have a wife already.”

Gao Yifeng was considered a celebrity, so this incident spread at an alarming speed. Despite the upcoming exams, the students’ enthusiasm for gossip was still unabated, and amidst collective guesses and inferences, the girl’s background was also dug up by everyone, the most beautiful girl in Xiaopang’s class gloriously became Gao Yifeng’s rumored girlfriend.

The girl’s name was Li Huanhuan, and she herself was also baffled. Although she was looking forward to having something to do with Gao Yifeng, the fact was that there was really nothing between them! Li Huanhuan explained to everyone honestly yet the more she explained, the more convinced they were.

The next day, Xiaopang also heard about it.

With a face full of regret and dismay, Xiaopang’s deskmate sighed. She looked distressed – well, she would have but her eyes betrayed her.

 The twinkling light of excitement could not be hidden, despite the grim face she wore.

“Aiya, aiya, with this, Gao Yifeng and Li Huanhuan, those two, will have no choice other than to come clean about the situation.” She gossiped, turning her head to her deskmate, for their reaction.

Unfortunately for her, Xiaopang’s response was to stay silent.

Gao Yifeng had a girlfriend, why didn’t she know?

Xiaopang felt very uncomfortable, not just jealous, but also… disappointed. How long have she and Gao Yifeng been friends for? Why didn’t he tell her about his girlfriend? He couldn’t trust her? Or was the relationship between the two of them actually not as good as she thought?  She has always been self-absorbed?

The more she thought about it, the more uncomfortable she became, and Xiaopang’s expression became more and more ugly. Her seatmate thought she was upset because Gao Yifeng didn’t like her, so she kindly comforted her for a long time. Xiaopang didn’t want to disturb her seatmate as it would cause a delay with her revision, so she took a sick leave and went home. The teacher was worried that she would go back alone, but Gao Yifeng volunteered to send her off.

Gao Yifeng obviously didn’t know enough about his popularity and the speed and variation of the gossip, so he did not know that he had become the protagonist of a certain news in this fashion, let alone what he and Li Huanhuan had to say. Naturally, he didn’t understand Xiaopang’s mood at this time. He thought she was under too much pressure because of the upcoming exam.

 Along the way, Gao Yifeng tried his best to make Xiaopang smile. This should have worked under normal circumstances, she would have been bent over laughing, unable to stand up. She would have laughed so much that she would not even be able to ride the bike, but today Xiaopang had a sullen expression and did not smile nor speak.

Gao Yifeng was a little anxious, “What’s wrong with you?”

Xiaopang didn’t look away, “Nothing.”

Gao Yifeng: “Xiaopang, are we still friends?”

“It’s hard to say.”

“…”

Gao Yifeng was frustrated because of Xiaopang’s “hard to say” answer. The sudden change in the attitude of this idiot left him very confused. Next day was the exam. He was pondering this question even in the examination room. What happened to Xiaopang? She is a very righteous person, and she would not so easily say such a thing about our friendship, unless, unless…

Gao Yifeng was about to clap the table and laugh. It might be that Xiaopang thought of himself as someone more than just a friend, it must be so! La la la, Xiaopang, brother has decided to follow you, don’t be polite with brother…

The teacher in the examination room looked at Gao Yifeng who was smirking, and secretly shook his head, thinking that the exam questions this time must be abnormal.

Xiaopang has never paid attention to Gao Yifeng. The two of them were not in the same examination room, but Li Huanhuan and Gao Yifeng were in the same examination room.  That was right.

Xiaopang thought Gao Yifeng wouldn’t need her anymore. People like him didn’t lack friends, and it was not certain whether the two of them were even real friends, hmm.

What was more, people were now happy to see him with a beautiful woman!

Therefore, Xiaopang now saw Gao Yifeng with mixed feelings of grief and jealousy and her first reaction was to turn around and walk away. There was only one English session left, and she didn’t want to ruin her mood because of him, even though her mood was already bad enough.

“Hey, Xiaopang.” Gao Yifeng stopped her.

“Don’t call me Xiaopang.”

“Oh, little beauty!”

 “…”

Xiaopang grabbed the lunch box, impatiently, “I want to eat, what do you want?”

“I have something to say.”

“Aren’t you saying it already?”

Gao Yifeng was speechless, and pulled Xiaopang to a hidden place. He stared at Xiaopang directly, trying to make his eyes look sharp and compelling.

Xiaopang became nervous, wondering what he was going to say.

 “Little beauty.”

“…just call me Xiaopang.”

 “Xiaopang.”

“Um?”

“You like me.”

“!!!”

Xiaopang didn’t know how he had noticed, she had obviously hid it well. Although Gao Yifeng had just spoken the truth, she instinctively blurted out: “You’re speaking nonsense!”

“Really?” Gao Yifeng tilted his head to look at her. “Then, why don’t you want to be friends with me anymore? Do you want us to be in some other kind of relationship, such as… uh, lovers?” 

He clenched his fist and felt anxious as he shouted in his mind 

Say “yes”, idiot! You don’t need to talk, just nod your head…

Xiaopang suddenly felt that there was nowhere left to hide, and there was a moment of silence between the two. But she soon discovered that Gao Yifeng said this because of a misunderstanding of her words and actions, rather than noticing something. Therefore, she gained some confidence, raised her chin boldly, and said, “You have so many brain cells that are all useless? What are you thinking about? How could I look at you? It’s too late for me to hide from you!” The last sentence was barely true.

 Gao Yifeng was stunned, “Are you saying… the truth?”

 Xiaopang nodded firmly, “The truth.”

“Why?”

 “Um,” Xiaopang shook her head pretentiously, “I don’t think you have been a good friend. You should go back and reflect on your actions.” With that, she turned around and walked away, only to find that her hands were sweaty, and her legs were still trembling slightly.
