Chapter 130: Just 15 Minutes

"YuChen-ge, I like you. I want to be your girlfriend." 

Minshi said these words with utmost seriousness. Her gaze never strayed from Gu YuChen's face. It was as if she was willing her feelings to be recognized and accepted by the man seated beside her. 

On the other hand, Gu YuChen responded in a heartbeat. His expression did not change at all.

"I appreciate your feelings but I cannot return them," he said in an even voice.

"But you're not seeing anyone at the moment, if you just give me a chance…" Minshi tried to explain only to be cut off mid sentence.

"I have someone I love," he said succinctly.

"But.. it's been several years and there's been no progress. Have you not thought that it's not meant to be?" the girl hurriedly reasoned.

"It doesn't matter. My heart will not change," Gu YuChen replied.

"How can you be so sure? If she's been stringing you along for so many years.. she could be a bad person," Minshi insisted. She couldn't understand why Gu YuChen was so calm about this.

"It doesn't matter whether she's good or bad. It just has to be her,"

"That makes no sense! She could be using you and you're protecting her like this! I heard even Kari hasn't met her before!" Minshi pointed out.

"She can use me all she wants. This has nothing to do with you," Gu YuChen responded. There was a hint of warning in his calm voice.

"And if she never accepts your heart? Will you just stay alone?" Minshi prodded, acting impetuously. A feeling of dread began to creep up in her heart and she anxiously tried to salvage the situation.

"If that's the case then so be it," the young man replied in a terse manner obviously intending to conclude the conversation.

"That makes no sense. There's so many other girls out there. You could be with someone who actually loves you," she entreated.

"Minshi you're not understanding. It's not her who needs me. It's the other way around," he finally said, his tone bordering on exasperated. This was quite possibly the longest 15 minutes of his life. He couldn't understand why he had to take this much time to explain his feelings to someone who was of no consequence to him. 'This is for Su Ning,' he reminded himself. 'My NingNing cares for this person.'

"What do you mean?" she asked. 'How is it possible that Gu YuChen would need this girl? He is someone who has everything. Was this girl manipulating him?' Minshi wondered.

"If using me would let me stay by her side then she could use me all she wants," Gu YuChen explained with as much patience he could muster in that moment.

"Wha— why would you say that?" Minshi exclaimed, looking flabbergasted. It was so incomprehensible to Minshi that someone so exemplary like Gu YuChen would be so selfless when it came to matters of the heart. 'Why would he let himself be used like that?! Just how awesome was this chick?!'

"It's simple. Without her there's no me," Gu YuChen answered, staring directly at Minshi.

"So your feelings, it's better if you give them to someone else."

"…" Minshi was at a loss. With five simple words Gu YuChen  was able to shut her down completely. There was never any chance for her at all. For the first time in her life, Minshi suffered complete and utter defeat. It was a loss to an enemy she hadn't even met. A loss that she didn't know that she could ever recover from. In her 20 years of life, she just realized that there were things that she couldn't accomplish with sheer will and persistence. No matter how hard she tried, this man, Gu YuChen, would not come to like her. His entire life, his heart, his soul was meant for that girl alone. Minshi felt her heart break. It was a painful and stuffy feeling in her chest and her nose turned sour. Minshi was going to cry. She could feel her eyes stinging. 'I don't want to cry here. I don't want to let YuChen-ge see me in tears. If that happens, I would be way too embarrassed to face him again,' Minshi wailed internally. 

But alas her lacrimal glands appeared to have a life of its own and in a matter of seconds, her tears threatened to spill onto her cheeks. 'Oh God,' she thought to herself. Minshi never wanted to be that person. That type of weakling who resorted to using tears to get her way. She wasn't that kind of person but she couldn't help it. At this moment she felt so sad and heart broken. Just as she was about to rummage through her bag for some tissues, a masculine hand appeared in her line of sight. The hand held a monogrammed white handkerchief.

Without a second thought, Minshi grabbed the handkerchief and began dabbing her eyes. Gu YuChen obviously rejected her but why was he still being so nice? Why did he have to make it so hard to give up on him? Minshi sniffled.

Just then, an announcement rang in the train, they were about to arrive at their destination. 'Oh no! I can't let the others see me like this!' Minshi thought alarmed. 

"Let's go through the back," Gu YuChen said as he prepared to stand up.

Minshi didn't know what he intended to do but in her heart she knew she could trust this man. She turned to Gu YuChen and nodded following his lead.

As the train began to slow down they made their way out thru the back of the car, their friends who sat closer to the front still remained in their seats. To Minshi who was solely focused on getting out of this embarrassing situation, kept her head down and followed the tall man walking ahead of her. As soon as the train stopped, they disembarked and weaved through the crowd of people standing on the platform. It turned out the man was guiding her out of the station to where the taxi stand was located. The man wordlessly helped her into a taxi and gave the driver her home address paying for the ride in cash beforehand. 

Before he left, Gu YuChen turned to Minshi, "Take care. Make sure to text NingNing or she will worry." Minshi was so out of it that she merely nodded in response and Gu YuChen gently closed the door and made his way back into the station. He didn't even turn back to look at Minshi.

To be honest, Minshi was actually quite thankful for this, she didn't want to make even more of a fool of herself in front of the man. 'He's already seen my crying face. He rejected me but he was still respectful to the very end. He's really a great man. I really really like him.' 

At this moment, Minshi had to admit that she's never felt so jealous of someone else in her life. 'I'm so jealous of that woman he loves. She's so lucky to have him. He's willing to do anything and sacrifice anything for her. If I met him first, would I have had a chance?' she wondered. But then she suddenly thought of something, 'Who am I kidding? Karina also met YuChen-ge first but he still gave his heart to that other woman. If even someone like Karina couldn't get his attention after having been friends with him for so long, then that woman must truly be something else. I wonder if I would ever be able to meet someone like Gu YuChen in this lifetime?' 

Minshi realized it then, in that short 15 minute ride to Kyoto, she had accepted defeat. Just 15 minutes was all it took.

fyi: sadly this chapter has not been edited. =[ I am currently in the middle of busy season at work so it has been a bit difficult to keep my daily upload schedule this august. But I will try to keep on going! I hope you have been enjoying the university arc of the story and eventual progression of  our three main character's love stories! I know it has been a long time coming! This story has definitely been a slow burn.
