After careful consideration, Bai Ruan calmly replied, “I think it is appropriate.”
Lang Jing Feng was annoyed and amused at the same time. With a serious tone, Bai Ruan looked down at the ground and continued, “You still have to do your homework when you go back. I’ve talked to you so much a few days ago. Now that you have a learning goal, you need to restrain your playful heart.”
“I’ve already completed my homework.” Lang Jing Feng tilted his upper body slightly, closing the gap between the two of them. As he leaned closer, almost touching his face, Bai Ruan was startled and staggered back two steps. Lang Jing Feng just pointed a finger to his own eyes and sullenly said, “I stayed up late yesterday and wrote until two o’clock. Look at my dark circles…”
Bai Ruan’s eyes flickered across the young man’s face, trying to confirm the validity of his words.
He couldn’t tell whether or not the dark circles under his eyes were real. Bai Ruan only caught a glimpse of a gentle smile in this fiery gaze. In fact, Lang Jing Feng had a cold, stoic expression. It was as if he were angry with Bai Ruan, who’d pulled him out to do volunteer work during the holidays but still refused to give any rewards. However, Bai Ruan still thought that Lang Jing Feng was in a pleasant mood.
The smile dissipated into his expression like honey melting into water. With wisps of light-golden sweetness lingering around the corners of his eyes and eyebrows, no matter what expression he had, a layer of smile was hinted underneath his appearance.
Bai Ruan was stunned, and there was a faint feeling in his heart that was unknown. He instinctively felt that something was wrong but hurriedly waved it away.
“Look at me ah. Why are you hiding?” Lang Jing Feng leaned closer and had to let Bai Ruan see how haggard he was. “It was this Brother’s first time in his entire life doing homework until two o’clock in the morning, and it was all for you. Do you have no returning gesture?”
“Brother, what Brother?” Bai Ruan’s face sank. “Also, what do you mean it was all for me? If there is a change in homeroom teacher in your third year, you wouldn’t want to continue studying?”
Lang Jing Feng was firm with his decision. “Well, I’ll transfer to whichever class you teach.”
Bai Ruan was amused. “I’ll teach a year one class. You can transfer there.”
Lang Jing Feng was also happy. “Okay. Anyway, it’s not the first time I stayed back in the same grade. I can go back to the first year of high school and just start from scratch.”
Bai Ruan’s temper dissipated after being played around by the other. The conversation turned, and he said with a serious face, “I’ve said this many times. You should study for yourself, so that you can be admitted to a good university and have a good future. This is all your own affairs. Don’t always think that you are learning because of me. You must have the right attitude.”
“I’m really doing it for you…” Lang Jing Feng retorted halfway, paused, and smiled in an indulgent manner. “Forget it, I know I’m in the wrong and Teacher Bai is right… Shall we watch a movie together? I’ve really finished my homework. The rest are ones I don’t know how to do.”
“Watch a movie?” Bai Ruan’s eyebrows twitched. He had no idea what kind of thoughts this little wolf cub’s head had.
A male teacher and his male student going to the movies together. Although it sounded strange, they were both men after all. So, compared to avoiding suspicion, he was more worried about fainting in the movie theatre if he were in close contact with the demon wolf in a dark and confined space for more than an hour… The answer was he very likely would.
“No,” Bai Ruan decisively refused. “Watching a movie with you, is that appropriate?”
“What’s the matter?” Lang Jing Feng frowned and immediately began to wholeheartedly sell his miserable feelings.1 “It’s just a film released some time ago. I’ve seen the first two films, and I’ve been looking forward to the third one. Every day there are people giving me spoilers. I can’t even concentrate on my studies.”
Bai Ruan immediately realised the film Lang Jing Feng was talking about was the same one he was interested in. However, he was busy with work and hadn’t had the opportunity to watch it yet. The film was highly discussed in China. If he didn’t take the chance to watch it soon, it would be completely spoiled by others.
“Plus, I don’t have a girlfriend.” Lang Jing Feng said with a smile. “It’s embarrassing to go by myself, or should I find one now and have her watch with me?”
In front of a teacher, he said that he wanted to have a girlfriend. No other student out of the thousand in second years would be so daring. Bai Ruan was so angry that a series of reprimanding words were stuck in his throat. “What finding a girlfriend!? You…”
“I’m just kidding.” Lang Jing Feng bit his lip, smiled and continued with a low voice, “I was wrong, Teacher Bai. I won’t find a girlfriend, so can you accompany me to watch it?”
Bai Ruan’s chest was rapidly rising and falling. He was still riled up from anger.
When Lang Jing Feng saw this, he confessed his mistake and apologised. His tone was extremely sincere, but his expression showed a look of cajoling his beloved partner. Since Bai Ruan didn’t directly look at him, he didn’t notice what was wrong. After being coaxed for several rounds, his anger disappeared.
“Is it okay, Teacher Bai?” Lang Jing Feng pressed on, “If you don’t go, I won’t come out next week.”
“Ha…” Bai Ruan had lost his temper to the point of speechlessness.
He had also arranged a day trip for Lang Jing Feng next Sunday.
From Bai Ruan’s point of view, he believed that Lang Jing Feng would obey his arrangements and not make any conditions. After all, Bai Ruan was doing what was right for him.
Upon scrutinising it carefully, from Lang Jing Feng’s perspective, he was used to being dumb. Suddenly asking him to vigorously study and then sacrifice his rest time to volunteer… He would be emotional, and it made sense that he wanted to relax.
The young man finally had the heart to correct evil and return to the right path. As a teacher, he should also appropriately follow his pace. If he were to continue to press and pressurize himself and reinvigorate his rebellious emotions, wouldn’t the disadvantages outweigh everything?
Bai Ruan thought for a moment. He decided to make an exception and said, “I understand. It’s just this one time. This will definitely not work next week… Also, I’ll buy the movie tickets. Otherwise, we can forget it.”
“Okay.” Lang Jing Feng swiftly responded.
Bai Ruan took out his mobile phone and booked two movie tickets. During the entire booking process, he was careful not to let Lang Jing Feng see his mobile phone screen.
Half an hour later, Bai Ruan awkwardly went to the cinema with Lang Jing Feng.
“Teacher Bai, sit down and I’ll buy something to eat.” Lang Jing Feng pointed to a row of small sofas near the ticket machine and walked away.
After a while, Lang Jing Feng returned, holding a bucket of popcorn in one hand and a plastic bag containing Coke with his fingers. He walked into the theater with Bai Ruan.
“Teacher Bai,” Lang Jing Feng’s tone was bursting with happiness. Saying the word ‘teacher’, it was as if he were enjoying the pleasure of taboo love that actually only existed in his fantasy. “Which row is it?”
“The second-to-last row. Seat number 8.” Bai Ruan calmly replied.
Lang Jing Feng nodded and walked back. Bai Ruan was like a rabbit and jumped to the fourth row.
Lang Jing Feng’s expression suddenly became full of anticipation.
As soon as Bai Ruan sat firmly in the middle of the fourth row, Lang Jing Feng squeezed in, chasing after him with a gloomy expression. He whispered, “Teacher Bai, did you deliberately choose this seat?”
Bai Ruan dropped his line of sight and did not dare to look at him. After a moment of silence, he replied, “…Yes.”
Lang Jing Feng stared at Bai Ruan with love and hatred, while the other dared not raise his eyes to look at him. He was obviously embarrassed and was gritting his teeth.
Bai Ruan continued vigilantly, “Don’t sit here, or I’ll leave. Let’s sit further apart. You can also relax while we watch separately.”
Lang Jing Feng stared at Bai Ruan for a long time. Seeing Bai Ruan lower his head stubbornly and in embarrassment, he let out a gloomy breath, turned, and walked away. But after a while, he walked back again.
Bai Ruan smelled Lang Jing Feng’s demonic scent approaching again. He stiffened and thought that he should have just run away. If Lang Jing Feng were to not come out next week, he would have a showdown.2 Just as he was thinking these thoughts, Lang Jing Feng’s faintly helpless and indulgent tone suddenly sounded from his side. “Original or caramelised?”
Bai Ruan turned his head mechanically and saw Lang Jing Feng standing beside him holding two buckets of popcorn. He didn’t seem to have the intention of sitting next to Bai Ruan. He only leaned over and put a glass of ice coke into the cup holder beside Bai Ruan, like a handsome waiter.
“…Both are fine. Thank you.” Bai Ruan breathed a sigh of relief. It was as though someone he had mistakenly blamed, provided him a touch of guilt, and warmth appeared in his heart.
Lang Jing Feng put the popcorn bucket in his right hand to Bai Ruan’s lap, stared at him with greedy and restrained eyes, then turned back to his second-to-last row to sit down.
Teacher Xiao Bai is too shy… When the movie started, Lang Jing Feng shrank in his seat lazily, bit on the straw, and indulged in his own random thoughts, paying almost no attention to the movie.
On Monday, the next day, the second period in the afternoon was physical education.
Today, the physical education class of Class Four escaped from the teachers of various subjects, survived the Jedi, and ate chicken smoothly3.The physical education teacher fully understood the students’ feelings about using physical education class as a holiday and organised all the students to jog around the playground for two laps before announcing free activities.
Bai Ruan checked the Chinese homework that was issued for the weekend in the office. The early summer weather was breezy, and the white cotton curtains of the office kept rising and falling. The desk was covered with the constant change of light and shadow. The sound of a basketball dribbling came from the playground.
Everything was peaceful until Chen Ran, the monitor, rushed into the office, profusely perspiring.
“What’s the matter?” Bai Ruan was startled by Chen Ran’s expression.
“Shen Jia Han fainted!” Chen Ran took a deep breath and said, “The school doctor couldn’t be woken up either. I’ve already called 1204.“
“I’ll go and see.” Bai Ruan put the things on hand aside and quickly walked toward the infirmary.
Shen Jia Han was a learning committee member and the Math representative in Bai Ruan’s class. She was attractive, had a quiet personality, and was an artistically talented student. She had a level ten piano certificate 5and was a student with high achievements; her grades were stable in the top three of the class. Thus, Bai Ruan had great expectations for her.
In the infirmary, Shen Jia Han was lying on the infirmary bed, her face pale as paper, and a few girls who were close to her gathered around the bed. At the door, Lang Jing Feng leaned against the door frame and stood with his arms crossed, his heroic eyebrows slightly twisted. Seeing Bai Ruan approaching, Lang Jing Feng’s expression immediately relaxed, the corner of his lips curled up, and he greeted, “Teacher Bai.”
Chen Ran, who’d followed him, immediately added, “Lang Jing Feng carried her here.”
“Well done,” Bai Ruan turned to Lang Jing Feng and nodded slightly. He quickly walked to the school doctor, gave Shen Jia Han a quick glance, and asked, “Teacher Xu, how’s my student?”
The level of the school doctor’s professional skills was quite suspicious. His daily work was only to give medicine to the students who fell and broke their skin and he would then provide anti-diarrhoeal drugs to the students who had diarrhea. He scratched the top of his head and mumbled, “I’ve asked the girls who were together with her. They said that she didn’t show any symptoms before she fainted. This…”
As the school doctor was talking, the wails of the ambulance sirens came from outside.
The ambulance staff first performed a preliminary vital signs examination for Shen Jia Han. Bai Ruan used this time to call her father to inform him of the situation. A few minutes later, Shen Jia Han was sent to the vehicle. The ambulance could only take one family member. As the homeroom teacher, Bai Ruan followed into the ambulance to accompany her and persuaded the few girls, who were in a daze, to go back to class.
Like a large dog, Lang Jing Feng silently followed behind Bai Ruan all the way out of the school.
“You go back to class.” Bai Ruan chased him away.
“Teacher Bai,” Lang Jing Feng looked at him. “I was the one who carried her to the infirmary.”
Bai Ruan was startled, a little confused by this sentence. “And then?”
Lang Jing Feng smiled. “Nothing. I’m going back to class.”
Bai Ruan got into the ambulance, feeling confused.
The author has something to say:
Lang Jing Feng: It was on the back, not the princess carry kind.
Bai Ruan Ruan: … Is there a big difference?
Lang Jing Feng: … Are you a straight man???
