Rabbits have a keen sense of hearing. Bai Ruan could clearly hear Lang Jing Feng’s laughter. He was too ashamed to lift his head. He hung his head down, leaning against the wall and then sneaked back into the office. Without a word, he lay on his desk to cool down in the dark, placing his cheeks on the table, his arms circled around his head and pretended to have a nap.
I was being so lewd in the school’s toilet. I am a teacher, how can I behave like this… Teacher Bai silently blamed himself. Feeling embarrassed, his exposed ears outside his hair were burning red as though they were about to catch fire.
Fortunately, Bai Ruan had finished his Chinese class in the morning and wouldn’t be working during the self-study period that night. As a second year teacher, he was not on duty for the nightly self-study sessions until nine o’clock. Homeroom teachers could not always be on duty at such a late hour, so the school adopted a teacher rotation system. The subject teachers who were not in charge of any classes would be responsible for them and would help in supervising the evening self-study classes. So Bai Ruan stayed till the fourth period and got out of class in the afternoon.
Bai Ruan’s house was not far from the school and was only four stops away by subway. It was an apartment with an area of more than 90 square meters. The area was prosperous and the surrounding facilities were complete. It was purchased and entirely paid off two years ago by Bai Ruan’s Master, Taoist Yun Qing.
This Master Yun Qing was hardworking and didn’t spend all his time idly. He knew how to calculate feng shui and fortune-telling. Whenever he arrived in a new city, he would follow the guidance of wealth and purple energy to find a wealthy business official. Using this technique, they made a lot of money. He was single, had no children and his closest descendant was Bai Ruan. Even though he tried his best to refuse, Yun Qing forcefully gave him a house.
When Bai Ruan came home, the first thing he did when he entered the door was to go to the living room. He opened the rabbit cages that were leaning against the wall and greeted them in a gentle tone like that of speaking with children, “Brother is back.”
As soon as the cage door was opened, more than 20 white bunnies gushed out of the rabbit cage like small clouds. The bunnies whose spiritual senses were not awakened ran and played around with joy, like cotton candy rolling on the floor. Those that did nestled against his feet and rubbed against his ankles with their soft white glutinous bodies. Some of them even stood up on their hind legs, holding onto his thighs with their two front paws and placed their fluffy rabbit face on his leg to show intimacy.
“You guys are very obedient.” Bai Ruan leaned over, stroked the bunnies one by one and rubbed the soft white dumplings. Bai Ruan’s accumulated fear and pressure disappeared without a trace. His heart melted upon seeing his babies being so adorable.
“Okay, okay. Children, please give me some space.” Bai Ruan straightened up and clapped his hands. “Brother is going to cook.”
The bunnies with spiritual sense obediently made a path, automatically and consciously using their small bodies to arch away those silly babies without spiritual sense so that they wouldn’t get in the way.
Three months ago, Bai Ruan had bought more than 20 newly weaned little white bunnies at the pet market for a price of fifteen dollars for one and twenty-five dollars for two and brought them home to raise. After three months, eight rabbits with talent developed spiritual consciousness. Their intelligence was significantly higher than that of the undeveloped rabbits. Even if they had spiritual consciousness, they wouldn’t necessarily be able to cultivate into spirits. It all depended on talent and luck. But this was only the beginning.
Helping these bunnies to cultivate was because Bai Ruan had a small ambition.
The number of demons in the world exceeded the limits of human imagination. As one of the four ancient civilisations in China, religions, myths, and legends had been flourishing. For thousands of years, various sects had been continuously innovating methods to cultivate. As early as a thousand years ago, there were animals with high spirituality who cultivated into spirits. These historical numbers had been accumulating to this day which had then caused the ratio of the number of demons in China to the human population to remain high, ranking among the first in the world.
As the population of demons increased, there was naturally a need for governance to regulate laws. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the government established a series of administrative departments dedicated to demons. The outside world that said that “after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, no one was allowed to cultivate to become a spirit” was actually a myth. The growth of animals and plants were equivalent to the birth of human beings. It was necessary to go to the relevant departments to register for the residence and go through the documents and various special procedures. It was not to prevent the population growth of demons but a requirement in a regulated and law-abiding manner under the guidance of Marxism and Leninism1 to refine scientific studies for cultivating spirits.
Some time ago, the seventh national census2 of demons had ended. When Bai Ruan checked the census data on the internal website of demons, he found that most of the living ones were carnivorous beasts with strong self-preservation abilities such as the eternal life span of turtles, bowhead whales, lighthouse jellyfish and other aquatic creatures, as well as long-lived trees. Herbivorous demons were naturally weak and the numbers of the rabbit and pika3 family were pitiful.
As a lucky white rabbit who had managed to cultivate into a spirit, Bai Ruan wanted to contribute to the revitalization of the herbivores. Even if the herbivores became demons, they were still a disadvantaged group. In order for them to compete for living space in society where carnivorous demons and humans dominated, it was necessary to expand the ethnic group and support each other. What Bai Ruan could do was to cultivate some rabbit demons.
Bai Ruan went to the kitchen, washed his hands, wore his apron and started cooking.
He took out a large bag of alfalfa hay for baby rabbits from the cabinet and put a bundle on the cutting board. He began to chop it into easy-to-eat lengths and put them into several large troughs4. The large group of white dumplings squealed and rolled over. With their small ears and their heads bowing down one after another, for a while, there was only the clucking sound of grazing in the kitchen.
Seeing that the bunnies were eating deliciously, Bai Ruan was a little greedy, so he secretly picked up a bunch of alfalfa, turned his back and quickly put it into his mouth.
Alfalfa was a special forage for young rabbits. Bai Ruan occasionally craved it but he was too embarrassed to eat it in front of so many baby rabbits as it was equivalent to an adult in his 20s eating a kid’s set meal in front of a group of children. Surely, it would be very embarrassing.
After feeding the baby rabbits, Bai Ruan also made himself a platter of grass and vegetables. After eating and drinking, he went to the living room to clean the rabbits’ cages and cleared out a few patties of dung balls. Fortunately, his house was on the 12th floor. At this height, he was not worried about theft. So in the past three months, the windows were open for almost 24 hours and there was not much smell in the house.
After cooking for more than 20 bunnies, Bai Ruan walked into the bedroom and closed the door, letting the bunnies play freely in the living room. He started the computer, clicked the browser and opened a forum.
The forum was dedicated to demons. When you opened the homepage, the login interface would automatically pop up. If you didn’t log in, you wouldn’t be able to browse in any sections. Registered members were required to upload scanned copies of their front and back identification card for verification purposes. This was to avoid humans entering the platform.
Bai Ruan casually opened a few posts and browsed through apathetically. He then clicked into the adult audio-visual product area at the bottom of the forum and searched for the keyword “rabbit”. He wanted to see if there were any new rabbit films. But the search results were the ones already downloaded in his phone. As there were only a few rabbit demons, the demand for rabbit films were naturally very low. There were also fewer rabbit demons to release these resources. Throughout the year, there may only be a few new movies. The ones specifically for rabbit demons were even rarer and most of them were edited.
Having lived in human form for so many years, Bai Ruan now had sexual desire towards human bodies, but sometimes he would still crave rabbit films. After all, it was his natural instinct.
Bai Ruan sighed quietly and opened a rabbit movie that he had seen too many times.
A low and vigorous male voice slowly sounded, “Spring is here, everything is resuscitated, and it’s the season for animals to mate. The male rabbit is leaning on its female…”
As Bai Ruan stood up and got a few pieces of tissue, his beautiful face slowly burned. Although he was terribly disgusted with himself, he could not resist the male rabbit’s instinct. He turned down the volume with a guilty conscience, fearing that the sound would spread to the living room and teach naughty things to the children.
After fifteen minutes, the third time was over.
Bai Ruan was tired and content. His hands and legs were jelly, and he laid on the bed to rest.
The leisurely and happy night passed quickly. Before going to bed, Bai Ruan went back to the living room and gave more than 20 bunnies demon energy. The energy of the little white dumplings in his palm, one by one, became abundant. Finishing his task, he put the male and female rabbits back in their separate cages and waved at them. “Brother is going to bed. Good night.”
The bunnies with spiritual sense waved their ears at him.
Before going to bed, Bai Ruan had a headache once he thought of going to work tomorrow and Lang Jing Feng’s handsome but scornful face appeared in his mind.
Don’t think about Lang Jing Feng. I’ll get a nightmare if this continues… Bai Ruan shivered upon thinking about it and hurriedly distracted himself by counting sheep.
This was how Teacher Bai’s day ended in human society.
The next day, Bai Ruan was feeling dreadful and forced himself through the early self-study inspection and the morning Chinese class. Lang Jing Feng was still giving him some face5. The Chinese textbook he took out yesterday morning had not been touched. The page of ‘Water Dragon’ was turning gray the longer he looked at it. Bai Ruan pretended not to see it, let alone lecture him about it. Thinking of the embarrassing incident that happened in the men’s washroom yesterday, he did not even dare to look at Lang Jing Feng.
Bai Ruan didn’t dare to take notice of this student, but other students still had to do so as usual. During lunch break, he went to the Class Four classroom, put half of his body through the front door and shouted, “Zhou Hao Chen.”
A boy sitting in the first row raised his head anxiously.
Zhou Hao Chen was a serious student with a quiet personality. Initially, his test results were still in the middle and upper range but the monthly test he did a few days ago had plummeted to the eleventh position from the bottom. Bai Ruan had originally planned to talk to him but Lang Jing Feng, who had transferred from another school the day before yesterday, disrupted his plans, so it was delayed for two days.
Bai Ruan beckoned to Zhou Hao Chen. “Come to my office.”
Zhou Hao Chen’s mouth twitched as he walked over in despair.
He skipped a grade and was the youngest in the class. His frame was also short and thin, causing the school uniform on his body to sway when he walked, making him look like a junior high school student. The conditions of his family were not very good, but they caught up with a demolition some time ago. Their old house was in a prosperous area. After taking the compensation, his financial situation seemed to have greatly improved.
Bai Ruan’s main concern was Zhou Hao Chen’s father, Zhou Hai. Zhou Hai was a person with no culture and had a violent temper. Once, after coming to school for a meet-the-parent session, he was unhappy with his son. After leaving the classroom, he carried Zhou Hao Chen like a helpless chick and kicked him in front of a group of people. Fortunately, Bai Ruan stopped him in time. Therefore, Bai Ruan was very worried about Zhou Hao Chen’s declining performance, and he was afraid that some of Zhou Hai’s actions had affected him.
The two entered the office one after the other. Bai Ruan pulled a chair to his table and smiled. “Sit down.”
Zhou Hao Chen, who was about to be lectured, was taken aback and sat down timidly.
“This time, your monthly test scores have severely dropped.” Bai Ruan was straightforward and continued, “What do you think is the cause?”
Zhou Hao Chen pursed his lips and when he opened his mouth, he said things that were perfunctory to the teacher, “It’s just that… Recently, I wasn’t attentive in class and the homework was not done well… Teacher, I know I’m in the wrong. I will definitely improve next time… “
As Zhou Hao Chen was talking, suddenly the door rang and Lang Jing Feng was dragged into the office by a teacher.
The No. 2 High school uniform was not a pocket-style sportswear but a British-style dark uniform with a shirt and tie. Lang Jing Feng, who was 185cm6 tall, was pulled into the office by a class teacher who was of 170cm7. With the corners of his mouth curled impatiently, he came in with his back slightly arched and was forced to lower his head.
“You didn’t hand in your homework for two consecutive days! During the lesson, you didn’t even take out your textbooks! Whatever I asked you, you didn’t know! What are you doing here in school, ah!?”, the teacher roared.
The homeroom teacher of the first class was a violent and rigorous old man named Liu Zhen.
Liu Zhen, as his name suggested, was a tyrant in No. 2 High School. From the principal to the principal’s nephew8, if someone didn’t follow his wishes, they would be tormented. Nobody was able to defy him and escape his grasp, much less a newly transferred student.
Bai Ruan reluctantly took a breath of air that was infused with wolf scent and secretly helped Teacher Liu to wipe off his sweat. This little wolf boy had gotten into a fight with a teacher before transferring to this school. If Liu Zhen, that old man, suffered a punch by him, he would either end up lying in his grave or in the ICU. Bai Ruan clenched his fists nervously and looked at Lang Jing Feng vigilantly, ready to rescue Teacher Liu at any time.
However, what Bai Ruan didn’t expect was that Lang Jing Feng’s expression remained the same after the scolding. He had no choice but to caress the wrinkled tie that was ruffled by Liu Zhen and tucked it back to the collar of his uniform jacket.
Liu Zhen was infuriated. Like a child, he stretched out his hand to tug out Lang Jing Feng’s tie again.
Lang Jing Feng was startled for a moment and then scoffed.
Liu Zhen jumped with anger. “What are you laughing at? Is it that funny? You dare to laugh again and I’ll make you laugh until school ends!”
Lang Jing Feng coughed lightly and narrowed his smile, but still looked indifferent.
Bai Ruan retracted his peeping gaze. Settling down and barely restraining his fear, he continued to talk softly with Zhou Hao Chen. During this period, Liu Zhen’s thunderous roar had echoed in the office, forming a sharp contrast with Bai Ruan’s intimate brother-like atmosphere.
The two chatted for a while. Zhou Hao Chen’s mouth was sealed very tightly, and he insisted that his grades declined because of his recent misconduct in his studies. Bai Ruan knew that Zhou Hao Chen was sensitive and worried so he didn’t dare to probe him further. Gently and softly, he cautiously hinted his intentions and said, “Not only in the area of studying. If you encounter any difficulties in life, you can come to me. In my eyes, you students are like my younger siblings. So whatever you want to say, you can openly tell me anything you want, never be embarrassed, understand?”
“I understand, Teacher Bai.” Zhou Hao Chen bowed his head, his eyes were slightly red, as if he wanted to cry.
“… You may return,” Bai Ruan sighed.
Zhou Hao Chen nodded, got up and returned the chair to its original place. Just as he was about to go out, Bai Ruan ordered, “Come here.”
Zhou Hao Chen nervously walked back.
Bai Ruan secretively commanded again, “Stretch out your hands.”
Zhou Hao Chen thoughtlessly stretched out a hand.
Bai Ruan patted three big white rabbit toffees into his hand and with curving eyes said, “I’ll treat you to some sweets. Good luck on the midterms.”
Zhou Hao Chen, “…”
Zhou Hao Chen froze for a moment, then smiled, showing two brilliant little tiger teeth. “Thank you, Teacher Bai.”
Lang Jing Feng, who was standing close by, suddenly gave a low laugh.
