My Deep-sea Fishery

Chapter 891: Tortoiseshell gathering place (below)

Xiang Yang shook his head, "The tortoiseshell creature is now on the verge of extinction and has long been listed as a national protected animal."

Chen Qingsheng looked around in disbelief, "Is it this kind of guy everywhere, is it an endangered creature?"

"Is this much? Not much at all. Don't look at the surrounding area as if there are a lot of tortoiseshells. In fact, this sea area may be the largest gathering place for such tortoiseshells. If you disperse these tortoiseshells throughout the ocean, you Is this too much?" Xiang Yang asked.

Chen Qingsheng nodded thoughtfully, "Well, if that's the case, it's really not much."

Xiang Yang continued to look at the tortoiseshells.

In fact, Xiang Yang said that these tortoiseshells were on the verge of extinction, and there was no alarmism at all.

First of all, it is actually extremely difficult for the tortoiseshell to multiply.

The spawning period of the tortoiseshell is generally from March to April. When spawning, the female digs a hole on the beach during the day to lay eggs. The hole is about 20 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. The spawning period is divided into three spawning periods. , Each spawns 130-200 eggs.

The eggs of tortoiseshell are ovoid, white, with soft and elastic shells.

Hawksbill turtle eggs are about 3.5 cm in diameter and have a long incubation time. It takes more than two months for the larvae to hatch.

The carapace of the newly hatched hatchlings is not completely hard, but it has been arranged in a tile-like pattern. The necks of the hatchlings can be freely stretched, but they cannot rotate back and forth.

The young turtles at this time are actually extremely dangerous.

The racial status of the tortoiseshell creature is very bad.

According to the analysis of published and unpublished reports, due to the over-exploitation of the beaches where hawksbill turtles lay eggs and nests, the degradation of nest habitat, and the survival rate of larvae and adults, the subpopulations of all major sea areas in the past three generations have been greatly reduced.

In the past major hawksbill foraging areas, accidental deaths associated with marine fisheries and degradation of marine habitats. An analysis of the changes in subpopulations at 25 index sites across the globe showed that the number of females hatched each year dropped by 84% to 87% in the past three generations.

Many populations, especially some larger populations, continue to decline.

Some protected populations have been artificially stabilized or increased, but from the perspective of three generations, the overall decline of this species has exceeded 80%.

It has long been believed that hawksbill turtles and other sea turtle species are not threatened by extinction because they have long life spans, slow growth, long reproductive periods, late maturity, and high reproductive rates. Moreover, the hawksbill turtle population has many age levels, and the number of hawksbill turtles in the short-term decline is not easy to be affected. discover.

But in fact, although the reproductive rate of hawksbill turtles is high, like most sea turtles, the survival rate of hatchlings is quite low.

Many adult sea turtles are killed by humans intentionally or unintentionally, and the nests of sea turtles are also occupied by humans and animals.

Small mammals will attack the nests of tortoiseshells, scoop up the eggs and eat them.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, the nests of sea turtles, including hawksbill turtles and leatherback turtles, are attacked by mongooses just after their eggs are laid.

Dogs, sand crabs, jackals and even domestic animals will attack the hawksbill's den.

In the history of tortoise shells near Tobago, the tortoise shell was listed as an endangered species in 1982. This status was maintained in several subsequent evaluations in 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1994. Since 1996, the Red List of Endangered Species upgraded the protection status of tortoiseshell to critically endangered.

When hawksbill turtles were rated as endangered species, there were objections. Two petition reports claimed that hawksbill turtles and the other three species have multiple important stable populations worldwide. However, these petitions were rejected based on data analysis submitted by the Sea Turtle Expert Group.

The data provided by the sea turtle expert group shows that the population of hawksbill turtles has decreased by more than 80% in the past three generations, while the number of mature female turtles that nest and lay eggs has decreased by 84-87% each year, and the population did not increase significantly in 1996.

Moreover, these data cannot take into account juvenile sea turtles drifting in the ocean foraging for food in the measurement, so the resulting data greatly underestimates the population reduction. Therefore, based on these data, the tortoiseshell status is classified as CRA1, but not CRA2, because it is believed that there is insufficient data to indicate that the population of tortoiseshells will be further reduced by 80% or more in the future.

In the late twentieth century, governments of various countries made more and more efforts to protect hawksbill turtles, such as the implementation of temporary or permanent laws and regulations and the establishment of sea turtle nature reserves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Service has listed hawksbill turtles as endangered species since 1970. In order to protect the local hawksbill turtle populations, the United States has also implemented several restoration plans in appropriate locations.

Hawksbill turtles have also been included in the national secondary key protected wildlife list in my country. In many places, Huidong Port Sea Turtle Nature Reserves have even been built to protect hawksbill turtles, green turtles and other species.

Although it is illegal to hunt tortoiseshells, there are still many people who fish for tortoiseshells worldwide.

In some areas, tortoiseshell is still eaten as a delicacy.

Especially in our country, as early as the 5th century BC, hawksbill turtles and other sea turtles were regarded by the people as delicacies of mountains and seas. This kind of consciousness that has been deeply rooted in the bones for hundreds of years is difficult to change in a short time.

Even today, some people still believe that eating turtle meat can prolong life.

There are also people who like to collect tortoise shells as collectibles.

For example, in our country, there are many literati and writers who like to put a tortoiseshell shell in the study.

This is related to our traditional culture.

The tortoiseshell is one of the images in Chinese classical poetry.

For example, the wonderful description of Liu Lanzhi’s appearance in the Han Yuefu poem "The Peacock Flies to the Southeast" and "Ancient Poem for Jiao Zhongqing’s Wife" described Liu Lanzhi’s appearance. Why to comfort the parting, the tortoiseshell hairpin behind the ear, the homonym of "钗" means separation.

Even the poet Li Bai once wrote that "I often dislike tortoiseshell loneliness~www.readwn.com~ and countless poems often use tortoiseshell banquets to describe the exquisiteness and luxury of banquets.

Xiang Yang didn't think this kind of beautiful image was wrong.

The tortoiseshell shells are indeed very beautiful.

But because of his own selfishness, in order to occupy this beauty, he wanted to kill the small number of tortoiseshells. Xiang Yang felt that this approach was very wrong.

Xiang Yang felt that if this generation of people didn’t protect them well and allowed them to recuperate, the final result would be that the tortoiseshell creatures would only be able to survive in this faint blue area. The disappearance of the sea, completely only exists in the beautiful poems.

"Everyone wants to take pictures, hurry up, but be careful, don't hurt these tortoiseshells." Xiang Yangchao said to everyone.

In this tortoise shell gathering place, in addition to the adult tortoise shells, there are also some small tortoise shells smaller than a slap. If you are not careful, you will surely die if you are stepped on a foot.
