Chapter 1 : Misfortunes never come alone.

When Xia Lin looked up, he found himself at the doorstep of his family home.

The door of the house was tightly closed.

He remembered that today was the third day of Song Yan’s business trip, and according to the schedule, he should not be back for another two days.

Xia Lin stood quietly outside the door, his hands and feet cold. The diagnosis letter cupped in his hand seemed like a thousand pounds, so heavy that he could not lift his hand to open the door.

Even if he entered the house, he would not see Song Yan’s figure. There would be no one to comfort him and hug him.

Xia Lin didn’t know how long he had been in a trance, but he finally took out the key and opened the door with a sluggish movement.

As soon as he entered, he was greeted by a strong smell of smoke.

Xia Lin subconsciously coughed a few times. When he looked, he found Song Yan sitting silently on the sofa in the living room. He was holding half a cigarette in his hand, and his whole body was shrouded in a cloud of dense smoke. On the coffee table in front of him, there were scattered cigarette butts wrung everywhere.

Xia Lin was stunned for a moment before he came back to his senses. The hand holding the diagnosis book subconsciously ducked back. He hadn’t thought about how to tell Song Yan about it yet. He didn’t want to see Song Yan feeling sad for him.

“Why did you come back early?” He changed his tone to a lighter one and walked towards the window, “Smoking so much and didn’t open the window to get some ventilation.”

“You stand still.” Song Yan slowly raised his head to look at him and said in a deep voice.

Xia Lin suddenly stopped in his tracks. He found that at this moment, Song Yan’s face was dark and gloomy. His eyes even carried a bit of suppressed anger.

“What’s wrong?” He lowered his voice and turned towards Song Yan, “The work is not coming along well?”

Song Yan, however, suddenly stood up, his gaze fixed on Xia Lin for an instant. His whole body exuded a defensive posture, clearly rejecting his approach.

“Guess who I saw when I went to C City this time?”

“Who?”

“Yu Luotong.”

Xia Lin’s breath jerked.

“What,” Song Yan continued to stare at him, a mocking smile on his face, “is that surprising? In my lifetime, I was actually able to find Luo Tong again.”

Xia Lin’s heart stopped for two beats before he heard his voice hollow as he asked, “Luo Tong he…returned to China?”

“Sure enough, you knew early on that he had left the country.” The ridicule on Song Yan’s face intensified. It even revealed a hint of deep hatred, “But at the very beginning, why did you lie to me that Luo Tong was dead? You were so anxious for him to die sooner?

“I was forced to…”

“Pa–”

Xia Lin had not yet finished his words and was abruptly interrupted by Song Yan’s falling slap.

He felt his eyes go black, and his body swayed, so he reached out and braced himself against the wall to stabilize himself.

Holding back the burning pain on his cheek, he took a low breath and waited until his vision was clear again before he slowly said, “Can you… can you hear me out?”

Song Yan sneered, “Do you think that I would be stupid enough to believe you again?”

“……” Another wave of dizziness hit him, and Xia Lin closed his eyes. The words he had just organized were swallowed back down.

“Nothing more to say?” Song Yan’s smile was cold to the bone, “Xia Lin, these years I ask myself that I have treated you well, I also thought of living with you for the rest of my life to fulfil the promise of growing old with you. But how did you treat me? You lied to me that Luo Tong was dead, watched me suffer and wonder for a long time, and finally kept me by your side. You won, aren’t you proud of yourself?”

Xia Lin closed his eyes again, “Song Yan, love is not about losing or winning. I admit that I took advantage of the situation when you were in pain and uncertainty. But it was not my intention to deceive you that Luo Tong was dead.”

“That’s enough!” Song Yan interrupted him coldly, “I’m sick of seeing this pretentious look on your face.”

As he walked towards the door, Xia Lin suddenly caught up with him in a panic, tugging on his arm like a pitiful pet about to be abandoned: “Song Yan, where are you going?”

Song Yan shook off his hand without looking back, “You are given one day to move out of my house!”

“…Song Yan?” Xia Lin’s face paled a little.

“I don’t want to see you again. Please disappear from my life.” Song Yan said, walking out and fiercely closing the door.

Xia Lin stood frozen in place for a long time, tears of despair gradually spreading and coming up.

“Yu Luotong, if you were determined to disappear by fraudulent death, why did you come back now…”

He somewhat hated Yu Luotong’s betrayal, but he hated himself even more for being at his wit’s end at this moment.

He took a few steps back and sat down in a corner, letting his tears flow silently until twilight fell.

Finally, he remembered the diagnosis.

He dried his tears and looked down at the crumpled diagnosis in his hands. He gradually calmed down.

“So be it,” he said to himself as he exhaled heavily, “so…so be it.”

He hadn’t thought about how to tell Song Yan about this, but God had already made the decision for him.

In fact, whether Yu Luotong returned to China or not, he and Song Yan were not destined to grow old together in this life.

If that was the case, he might as well let himself go in a more liberal manner.

Thinking of this, Xia Lin crumpled the diagnosis into a ball and threw it into the waste paper basket.

He then opened the window to disperse the smell of smoke and cleaned out the ashtray on the coffee table. He put away the clothes hanging on the balcony and folded them, and labelled the food in the fridge.

He then packed his suitcase, put the key to the house down on the shoe cabinet, took one last look at the place that had held his memories with Song Yan for years, then pushed the door open and walked out.
