Omegaverse: The Alpha X’s Prey
Chapter 10 - The rugged boy in the mirror
"Call Uncle Gilbert and the big scary man with the drawing on his face first." Donovan piped up from the backseat, bouncing up and down excitedly.
Gabrielle was instantly reminded of the time she accidentally dropped a mandarin meant for her...son... and it just kept on bouncing and bouncing before rolling away. A younger Donovan frantically chasing the tiny fruit became a comical scene. Even Iris gave a short laugh, surprising Gabrielle. Shaking her head, Gabrielle left the Land of Nostalgia.
She was puzzled, the hand holding her phone was paused midair. "Why?" Donovan never met Jerry before…
"Because they won't be available soon." He was bouncing around in his seat excitedly. His first rescue mission!
Suddenly his world spun. Physically, Donovan knew he was in the car, but somehow he wasn't. His view wasn't that of the seat in front of him but in front of a wide mirror, and his reflection was off. If Donovan was a foot and half taller and had long unkempt hair and nails, he'd be convinced that he was talking to himself in the mirror.
Identical pairs of amber eyes stared at each other. Each stood gaping at the other with awe and wonder.
"Where are you?" A voice not unlike that of Donovan's spoke up from the reflection, only a little deeper. He was wearing what looked like a shapeless dress. Donovan looked enviously at the cleanness of his clothes. What was his secret not staining his white gown? The boy had a look of wonder on his face.
"I'm with alpha mommy. Where are you?" Donovan didn't feel any malice coming from the mirror, and deemed it was safe to respond to this stranger who looked like him.
The omega saw many broken toys littered around on the soft carpet. There was a small white bed in the corner. Somehow the room didn't feel warm or friendly despite all the accommodations and furniture. Maybe it was the uncanny theme of the room. Everything was blindingly white. Too white.
"I don't know. It's always here or the house. The doctor told me to call it my second home." The reflection looked around a bit, taking in the scenes rolling past the window. "What are you guys doing?"
"I'm on a mission!" Donovan stated proudly. "I'm going to find my baby brother!"
"Why? Did he get lost?"
"Nope! Mommies said bad people took him so we're going to get him back before he gets hurt."
There was silence. Awkwardness hung in the air, heavy like a fog.
"Well today I'm finally meeting my mate!" The reflection looked and sounded ecstatic, breaking the silence. "It's still a baby but I think I can play trains and cars with them."
"Maybe it's my brother?" Donovan seemed to think it over. The likeliness that the stolen baby could be the reflection's mate is just... not possible, right? "Mmhm, probably not." He paused before asking, "What's your name?"
"They told me not to give it to strangers." The rugged boy in the clean gown said. His image a stark contrast to his outfit.
"But you look a lot like me and we're talking. We can't be strangers. I'm Donovan, my mommies like to call me sweet pea." Donovan shrugged it off and smiled proudly when he said "sweet pea".
"Maverick, just Maverick is all." His eyes were downcast. Then he mumbled something unintelligible, eyes forlorn as they stared at his feet.
"Will I be able to see you again Maverick?" Somehow Donovan could feel how lonely Maverick was. Loneliness, a feeling he knew all too well.
"I don't know. I hope so." Maverick smiled hesitatingly. He's never had a friend before. His first friend! His smile grew bolder, wider.
Donovan gasped. His teeth! It reminded him of the scary Dracula movie he saw his mommies watching when he was supposed to be asleep. Those terrifying few minutes used to give him nightmares. Now, he shudders at the memory every time he conjures it up.
His canines were much longer and sharper compared to his other teeth. Instantly Maverick stopped smiling and his voice broke. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't smile-"
"-van! Donovan!" Gabrielle snapped her fingers in front the boy's face. "Put this on." Donovan was handed a small shirt, it was obvious from the rugged edges that the cloth was torn from something and sewn together crudely to fit him. He didn't noticed that the cab had stopped. Gabrielle already stepped out.
"Okay mommy." Donovan smiled. Before he stepped out of the car, Donovan looked around for Maverick, the boy who looked just like him. Feeling surprisingly disappointed, Donovan quickly pulled the shirt over his head.
The shirt was very thick and the roughness of the fabric irritated the any patches of sėnsɨtɨvė skin that wasn't covered by the short sleeved t-shirt underneath, but he decided to not pay any attention to it. Gotta keep his promise to omega mommy!
"Hey kiddo! Miss me?" Donovan was suddenly thrown into the air, flying among the clouds and birds.
