One Sword To Rule Them All

Chapter 33 - Memories

Arthas stood up, his face showed his confusion as he grasped Frostmourne's handle and left for the door. Gandalf who noticed his action, blocked his path, "What is the matter?".

Arthas tried to move around the wizard only to feel the wizard's hand grasp his shoulder, "Arthas...". Frodo watched everything with confusion as he held the Ring. "I need to be alone for a while, keep that ring away from me," Arthas said as he forcefully separated himself from Gandalf and left the house.

Gandalf turned to look at Frodo and his friends as he said, "I will meet you at the Town.". He left the house and approached Arthas who was walking away, "Stop! What is wrong with you?".

Arthas paused for a moment and continued walking, his voice was quite different as it reached the old wizard's ears, "I need to think about something, I will meet you at Rivendell. Farewell...".

Gandalf didn't chase the man anymore as he frowned in confusion and worry, 'Just what has happened? I need council...'.

Arthas walked in the dark night, the light of the moon on his body making his long white hair shimmer in the night. Memories of a foreign yet familiar life were flashing before his mind...

He remembered loving parents and a great life, he remembered being a beloved prince. He remembered strange halls and buildings, a great palace and people whom he recognized but at the same time didn't. One girl, he remembered quite clearly from his childhood...

He remembered becoming a paladin and wielding the powers of good taught to him by a great man known as Uther the Lightbringer, someone he would betray. He remembred becoming a knight of the Silver Hand as he gathered fame and the admiration of many. He remembered the holy Warhammer, Light's Vengeance being gripped in his hands as he sparred with the newly crowned king Varian Wrynn.

He remembered his fond and intimate feelings for Jaina Proudmoore and his heartache to end it all.

He remembered the scourge and his frustrations due to the unstoppable nature of his enemy. He remembered his mistakes as he purged a city of innocents and lost his humanity to the runeblade that was Frostmourne; How he became what he swore to battle as he led the armies of the scourge to lay waste to the realms of Lordaeron, Quel'Thalas and Dalaran and killed his own father, imprisoning his soul in his sword.

How the threat of Illidan Stormrage led him to don the Helm of Domination and merge with the soul of the evil Warlock Ner'zhul. How he waged war against the world as the new Lich King.

He remembered his demise at the hands of Tirion Fordring and the destruction of his sword at the battle due to Ashbringer. How all the souls were freed then his death and regret.

He then entered a hell made for him, he endured unimaginable pain and misery...

But one day, a whisper had spoken to him, 'What would you do for me if I give you another chance?'.

He remembered saying without hesitation, ready to do anything to be freed from such purgatory 'Anything!'.

A great being of Darkness had descended upon him, relieving him of his never-ending torment. 'I shall grant you a happy life relieved of all this misery, I shall give you the power to do as you wish. All I ask is you help me achieve my desire, Arthas Menethil...'

Arthas had heard of beings who were known as Void Lords in the ancient lore; Warned was him of their terror and power but he also knew he had no other choice. No one had saved him of this hell but this entity so he accepted. 'I accept! What is your desire, Void Lord?'

The entity had answered sinisterly, 'To return all to the void, to destroy the light and corrupt all with the great Darkness. We desire the great return to nothingness and you shall be my Harbinger, my champion of chaos on a great universe beyond the great void protected by a supreme entity of light whom I wish to destroy... The Deal has been made, Your soul belongs to me. Enjoy your life for I shall call upon you when the time comes...'.

He had then forgotten all his memories and his Soul had been dragged by the Void Lord to a peaceful world of humans. He lived there a happy and peaceful life. A world that despite having its own corruption and darkness, was much brighter than his first. He remembered walking on the streets as the Void Lord descended upon him and dragged his soul out of his new body and to a new place. 'Go and find me an anchor of Darkness. Destroy the evil spirit and let Frostmourne consume it for I shall descend on this Universe after you have done so. I shall grant you power above those of Sargeras and you shall become one of us. A bringer of Endings...'

The Void Lord had thrown him in the Universe but the great walls were protected and thus he had sustained damage to his soul that destroyed parts of his memory, The Void Lord had realized that too late but it still managed to save his memories and stop his mind from losing more and thus he had not lost memories of Earth and had thought he was stolen by a random omnipotent entity for its amus.e.m.e.nt. How childish and stupid, nothing happens without reason...

The Entity had given him Frostmourne and his body when it was in its peak of power. His soul had high potential to begin with? Because he was Arthas from the beginning and most of the potential was granted by the Void Lord.

And thus he appeared on Middle-earth and his story began... The Void Lord had only been able to briefly descend and give him back his memory due to the fact that he had touched the One Ring. What the Void Lord needed to descend was an anchor of Darkness and corruption and the one ring was the best available...

The memories caused him to feel great panic, confusion, and remorse. He had gone through the memories for days and when he gazed at Rivendell from afar on top of his Horse, his face concealed under his black cloak which only let his dazzling blue eyes be visible, showed hesitation, 'What am I supposed to do?'.
