Reborn as the Mayor's Girlfriend
10 Power
Lennox POV
I don't know when it started.
Perhaps, it's just like what everyone says.
"It's in the genes."
"Just as expected, you must've gotten in from your parents!"
Growing up, it wasn't unsual for me to attend all sorts of formal gatherings. It was something I can't escape due to the nature of work that my family is into. During dinner, they would talk about politics, law and governing. Even at a young age, I already understood all of it and was very invested into discussing about those.
Maybe it was also because I see how much passion my parents put into their work? They are both internationally-recognised lawyers and together, they both do what they can to help all sorts of people not only in the Philippines, but in the whole world.
So, since I was young, I was already very determined on what I really wanted to do.
Just like my parents, I want to be able to help people in that way. Knowing rules, governing, policies... who would've thought that mere knowledge, structures and words could straighten out the world?
But then... I realised that I wanted to do something far deeper and more intimate than what my parents have done.
Sure, a lawyer allows you to be able to help people... but at a certain point, you lack power. Even though my parents and family are quite influential, by law, they lack power.
That's what only politicians have. They have power yet as this world goes on, the politicians in my country just continue to become even more greedier... more evil deeds are done everyday just to satisfy themselves, fooling and using the poor people of the nation.
I know it's quite risky, but this is the only way I know to help not only tens of people, but possibly... a nation.
I want to save the wretched nation that we have today.
When my parents and relatives heard about it, they had mixed reactions.
"Son, it's admirable that you want to help people, but don't you think it's too soon? You've only done voluntary administrative posts so far. Although your work and experience are commendable for your age, even getting favour from overseas, you're still running against a politician with a vast experience." my mom fiercely said.
My mother, Lillian Zevallos, is an iron-lady. She is famous for winning several international cases and is famed throughout Asia, America and Europe. Although she is Filipino, she grew up mostly in America. Her family, who were Spanish-Filipino businessmen in the Philippines, moved over to America decades ago.
My father, on the other hand, is Riley Zevallos from the famed Zevallos clan in the Philippines. Our clan are mostly lawyers, volunteers or involved in the army. Being the descendants of a lawyer and national hero called Nicolas Zevallos, I guess our clan is still quite-respected and known. Although my family is proud for sharing the same blood as the national hero, there is a secret rule within us that we must not flaunt it. We must not brag about it through words and instead, prove our capabilities as a Zevallos.
"Your son's not that weak." my father replied bluntly.
My mother sighed and glared at him a bit.
"I know... but I'm just saying, a human's greed is immeasurable. Lennox is fighting against one of the greediest people in the country." my mother said calmly.
"Well, greed will continue to infiltrate this country unless Lennox runs." my father said once again.
I felt assured once I heard those words.
I can proudly say that my parents are both good-natured lawyers. They frequently help those who are in marginalised sectors and those who can't afford proper law services. They care for the vulnerable and poor, which makes up a lot of people in this country.
However, they can only do so much.
Like I've said, as much as they want to help and change the country, they don't have the power. As much as they want to do changes, they keep being oppressed by crocodile and selfish politicians who keep this country going around.
It's been decades but we are still slaves in our country, controlled by crocodiles who don't even feel shame stealing from the people.
This country... it definitely needs change. For once, power must be used properly, utilised only for good and total development.
