Reincarnated as a boss tyrant in the game
#658 - Queen Selection (Part 3)
The morning light filtered through the gauze curtains, casting dappled shadows in the palace.
Maria lazily turned over, the silk blanket slipping from her smooth shoulders.
Soren's arm immediately wrapped around her, pulling her back into his embrace.
"Don't go..." Soren's voice was still drowsy, his warm breath caressing the back of her neck.
Maria chuckled softly and turned to face him: "What time is it, and you're still..."
Before she could finish speaking, Soren's kiss had already landed.
The kiss carried the languor unique to the early morning, yet gradually grew passionate.
Maria's hands involuntarily climbed up his back, feeling the firm lines of his muscles.
"Soren..." she gasped, trying to push him away, "Aileen might come at any moment..."
"Let her wait," Soren mumbled, his lips trailing down her neck.
Maria wanted to say something more, but was interrupted.
Just then, a deliberate cough came from outside the door.
"Your Majesty!" Aileen's voice came through the door panels, "You have a tea party with the noble ladies this morning."
"No need!" Maria hurriedly called out, her voice faltering, "Wait... wait a moment..."
Soren finally stopped, but not because of Maria's urging. He leaned down and whispered in her ear:
"Just one last time, I promise."
Outside the door, Aileen's sigh was clearly audible.
When everything was finally over, Maria was exhausted.
She glared at Soren, but found him smiling like a cat that had just stolen cream.
"You really are..." She shook her head helplessly, but couldn't hide the smile in her eyes.
Soren reached out to tidy her disheveled hair: "Who told you to be so charming?"
Outside the door, Aileen's cough sounded again, this time with obvious impatience.
Maria sighed and said loudly, "Come in."
Aileen pushed the door open and walked to the wardrobe without looking sideways. She skillfully selected clothes, as if blind to the messy scene on the bed. But Maria still noticed that the tips of Aileen's ears were slightly red.
"Your Majesty!" Aileen said while arranging the clothes, "Today's tea party is very important. Several duchesses have already arrived."
Maria nodded and was about to get up, but Soren grabbed her hand.
"Stay with me a little longer," he said softly.
Aileen finally couldn't help but roll her eyes: "Your Majesty, you should also go and deal with government affairs. The ministers have been waiting in the council hall for an hour."
Soren reluctantly let go of her hand, watching Maria get up and change clothes with Aileen's assistance.
The sunlight filtered through the gauze curtains and fell on her, plating her with a golden halo.
Soren couldn't help but stare blankly until Aileen coughed again to remind him.
"Your Majesty!" Aileen said expressionlessly, "Your clothes are on the floor."
Only then did Soren realize his predicament and hurriedly get up to dress.
Maria looked at his flustered movements and couldn't help but laugh.
At this moment, how she wished that time could stay forever in such an ordinary morning.
Inside the Amber Palace's tea room, several duchesses were already seated.
In the delicate porcelain cups, black tea emitted a curling fragrance.
Maria sat upright in the main seat, elegantly raised her teacup, and glanced over each of the noble ladies present.
"I have invited everyone here today," Maria took a sip of black tea, "to discuss His Majesty's marriage."
As soon as she finished speaking, the ladies exchanged meaningful glances.
Maria noticed that Duchess Klein's fingers tightened slightly, while Duchess Lancaster revealed a determined smile.
"Your Majesty!" Duchess Klein spoke first, "My youngest daughter has just turned eighteen this year and is not only proficient in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, but has also broken through to become a seventh-tier mage..."
"Madam Klein!" Maria interrupted her gently, "Your daughter is indeed excellent. However..." She put down her teacup, her gaze becoming sharp, "His Majesty needs an empress who can fight alongside him."
The tea room fell silent.
The ladies looked at each other, obviously not expecting Maria to be so direct.
"Your Majesty's words are mistaken!" Duchess Lancaster elegantly smoothed her skirt, "The position of empress emphasizes virtue and family background. My Lancaster family has been for generations..."
"Madam Lancaster!" Maria interrupted again, "You are right, family background is indeed important. But more important is strength." She stood up and walked to the window, "Now that the empire is in a troubled time, we need an empress who can shock all sides."
The ladies exchanged uneasy glances.
They all understood Maria's implied meaning.
"Your Majesty's meaning is..." Duchess Klein asked tentatively.
Maria turned around, her gaze like a torch: "His Majesty has already selected General Jennifer as the empress candidate."
"What?" The ladies exclaimed at the same time.
"That commoner general?" Duchess Lancaster asked incredulously.
Maria smiled slightly: "Although General Jennifer's background is not high, she has followed His Majesty in battles to the south and north,
and has made great achievements. More importantly..." She paused, "She is about to break through to the Saint Rank."
There was an uproar in the tea room.
Saint Rank experts are not countless in the empire today, but each one is a major figure who can influence the empire.
If Jennifer truly breaks through to the Saint Rank, then her position will be unshakable.
"But..." Duchess Klein wanted to say something.
Maria raised her hand to stop her: "I know everyone's concerns. But please think, what does a Saint Rank expert as empress mean for the empire?"
The ladies were silent.
They were all smart people and naturally understood the stakes.
"Moreover!" Maria continued, "Although General Jennifer's background is not high, she is upright and deeply loved by the soldiers. Such an empress can truly win over the people."
Duchess Lancaster wanted to refute, but seeing that the other ladies had already begun to waver, she had to close her mouth unwillingly.
"Ladies!" Maria sat down again, "I know you are all thinking for the empire. But please believe that His Majesty's choice must be the most beneficial to the empire."
The tea room fell silent again.
The ladies had their own thoughts, but they all understood that the general trend had been set.
"Since that's the case!" Duchess Klein spoke first, "We naturally support His Majesty's decision."
The other ladies also echoed her.
Maria nodded with satisfaction and raised her teacup: "Then let us use tea in place of wine to wish the empire a wise empress."
