Empress Maria, born into the Vera family of the Central Creus Province, saw her family rise rapidly after she married Gustav. Originally, they were merely local landed viscounts, but at their peak, they became one of the top aristocratic families in the Imperial Capital.

In her younger years, she was favored by Crown Prince Gustav and bore him three sons: Nicholas, Soren, and Yasuo. As Maria aged, she gradually lost Gustav's favor. Nicholas, as Gustav's eldest son, was first appointed as Crown Prince, but was later deposed due to Empress Maria's lack of magnanimity, excessive pride, and numerous enemies.

In the game, five years after her third son, Yasuo, was used as a scapegoat and died, and after Nicholas was deposed and committed suicide, her only daughter also met her end after Soren seized the throne. She was accidentally killed by the court mage corps. After a lifetime of struggle, she ended up with nothing and died in melancholy.
