About a couple of hours later, Adelaide woke up again. As she slowly lifted her eyelids at the sound of creaking, Lupin’s face was reflected in her blurred vision. He looked so pure and beautiful that it was hard to imagine the slick person he was last night as he slept now.
Adelaide blinked a few times, then slowly reached her hand towards his face. Soon the tip of her fingers reached the plump cheek. Then without hesitation, pinched his cheek.
“Ouch.”
“Don’t pretend to be asleep, Lupin.”
And don’t pretend that it hurts. Adelaide snorted and added. Lupinus burst out laughing, opened his eyes, and gently wrapped his arms around her waist.
“How did you know? That I’m not sleeping.”
“You chew on your lips when you sleep. I’ve seen it once or twice.”
Adelaide rolled over to her side and escaped from his arms. It felt like she would never be able to get up if she continued to be hugged by that warm body. She quickly got up from the bed, picked up her clothes, and put them on.
“You remember that?”
Lupin asked, looking up at her, as he laid on the bed. Thirty years ago, they used to take naps together, so it was understandable that she knew his sleeping habits then. But she still remembered it? It felt good but disappointing at the same time. Back then, he was just an ignorant kid.
“Of course. I remember you crying over nightmares.”
“… Forget about that.”
Lupinus swept his face with his hands in embarrassment. Adelaide didn’t want to and teasingly said “No”, then headed straight to the living room. Perhaps it was because she had worked so hard last night, her hunger surged. She ate a full meal, but that alone was not enough.
“Adela-!”
As soon as she went out into the hallway and took a few steps, Bell sprung up to her and hugged her. Adelaide greeted him as she caught the boy quite skillfully.
“Good morning, Bell.”
“This! I brought it!”
Bell would talk in short sentences like this whenever he was excited. What made him so excited this time? Looking carefully, she saw Bell’s hand holding Dungeon Daily.
In the Greenville Dungeon, there was one competition that was held every day, and that was the competition between Bell and Lisianthus to retrieve the Dungeon Daily newspaper.
Lisianthus would get up before anyone else, check the Dungeon Daily, and deliver it to Adelaide. However, Bell had always wanted the job because it was a chance for him to be praised by Adelaide.
But Bell who was growing up would often sleep in in the morning, so it was almost impossible for him to snatch the Dungeon Daily before Lisianthus.
It would be nice if Lisianthus would concede to him like an adult, but unfortunately, he wasn’t very kind to other demons and Adelaide was the only exception. Bell has been grinding his teeth for it for the past few days, and it seems he has finally defeated Lisianthus.
“Wow, did Bell bring the Dungeon Daily? Well done, our Bell!”
“Right? I’m good!”
“Yeah, very good! Thanks, Bell!”
Adelaide hugged Bell’s body and went round and round a few times, praising him with all her might. Bell smiled with great satisfaction and laughed.
‘Why did Lisian lose? Did he oversleep after all this time?’
Adelaide, puzzled by this, lowered Bell and walked towards the living room. She was too hungry to read the Dungeon Daily right away.
The closer she got to the living room, the stronger the savory smell of food became. She guessed today’s menu without difficulty. Potato soup and sandwiches.
Unsurprisingly, the menu she expected was placed on the table. Adelaide greeted Lisianthus, who was bringing her juice, with the same smile she had for Bell a while ago.
“Lisian, good morning! By the way, is Caladi back?”
“Good morning, Adele. Caladium has not returned yet.”
Somehow, the corners of Lisianthus’ eyes looked darker than usual. His voice was low like a demon who had just woken up. Did he stay up all night waiting for Caladium who hasn’t come back? Adelaide took a mouthful of the soup, thinking deeply, but she concluded that it was an absurd assumption.
“Adela! Let’s go for a walk!”
Bell demanded, looking up at her with burdensome twinkling eyes. She pitied him as Caladium, whom he used to walk with, was busy. Adelaide swallowed the soup in her mouth and answered.
“Okay, let’s eat then go for a walk.”
“Okay! Hurry up and eat!”
Bell smiled happily as he heard his desired answer. Then, as if looking for another demon to play with, he ran towards the second living space. Because he was a young demon, he was full of energy.
‘You run around so much no wonder the hem of your pants are all worn out.’
With slightly tired eyes, Adelaide looked at Bell’s back which was moving away quickly. But after a while, as if her stomach was shrinking, she quickly put a sandwich in her mouth again. Lisianthus sat down next to her and gently poured juice for her.
Only after Adelaide had finished two sandwiches did she seem to slow down. Lisianthus, who was looking at her calmly, opened his mouth.
“Did you enjoy it?”
I’m still eating, why is the question in the past tense? Adelaide tilted her head and raised her thumb.
“Yes! Very!”
What can I say, the food served by Lisianthus always guarantees the best taste. It’s impossible to imagine life without him now.
The corners of Lisianthus’ lips slowly raised and he smiled. But somehow his eyes were not smiling. Rather, he seemed to be in a bad mood. A ferocious energy floated around him, followed by a cold voice.
“More than me?”
What does that mean? Adelaide was bewildered, and she looked at him blankly. When their eyes met, Lisianthus smiled softly. It was beautiful, but it felt prickly.
“I want Adele to enjoy me the most.”
He spoke with a faint smile on his face.
“But I guess that isn’t the case for our master.”
Adelaide then realized that it was Lupinus, not the sandwich, that he was asking about. Lisianthus was jealous of what happened last night.
“That, no…”
Adelaide stuttered and couldn’t find the answer. She was in trouble. If she says that she liked him best, she was worried that Lupin would hear it, but it was too vague to say that they all tasted the same. If she were to be honest, they’re not exactly the same!
As she hesitated, not knowing what to do, Lisianthus burst into laughter.
“It’s a joke.”
He smiled playfully and shrugged his shoulders.
“Phew, you were joking.”
“This kind of joke, Lisian can be naughty too.” Adelaide smiled at ease and added “That’s a relief.” Then ate the rest of her sandwich again.
“What is your plan for today?
“Well, I’m going for a walk with Bell, and after that, I’m going to practice in my room as usual.”
As Adelaide shook off the breadcrumbs on her hands, Lisianthus pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her fingers one by one.
“I think it would be okay to train somewhere else soon. Can I help you today?”
“Yes, that’s fine too.”
“How are the results?”
“Ah, that’s-”
And at the moment she was about to answer. She suddenly felt a strange presence from the ceiling. She lifted her head and looked up to see a letter flowing from the postman’s aisle fluttering through the air.
‘You’ve been so lazy that you threw it away again!’
Adelaide clicked her tongue and grumbled about the Shoebill’s lack of professionalism. Just because they’ve seen each other once or twice, unimportant mail was often thrown in the aisle like that. To be precise, it was largely due to discovering that Adelaide was an easy demon. Of course, so as not to be torn, the letter from the organization under the Demon King was delivered safely and preciously.
She got up and reached out to grab the letter. But she soon realized that something was wrong with it. The presence she felt was much greater than a single letter.
Flutter. Flutter.
White envelopes began to enter the post office aisle one by one. The sound of the paper fluttering grew louder and louder.
Flutter flutter flutter!
“Ack! W-What?!”
Adelaide was startled and shouted. Dozens or perhaps hundreds of letters fell from the air. Within seconds, white paper filled the air in Greenville Dungeon.
Lisianthus raised one eyebrow and gently raised his hand. He was determined to use his powers so that Adelaide would not suffocate under them.
But just before he cast his spell, all of a sudden, the letters began to gather in one place. As if a school of small fish in a formation, the paper slowly lined up and formed a circle.
Lisianthus’ eyes widened for a second. The energy that was moving hundreds of sheets of paper in detail one by one was not unfamiliar to him. As he slowly turned his head, he saw Adelaide smiling.
“What do you think?”
“Does it look like I’m getting results?” Saying so, she swung her index finger round and round. The letters swirled around in accordance with her hand gestures, and then piled up one after another on the desk.
“Indeed, you are my master.”
Lisianthus smiled and admired.
It doesn’t take a lot of energy to control a single letter, but to move them carefully one by one, you need to be able to handle magic delicately. It was very different from how she turned his garden into a strawberry world not so long ago because she couldn’t handle his powers well. After Abaddon’s visit, she practiced every day, and her skills seemed to have improved.
“But there is no need for Master to waste her energy on this. Leave the little things to me.”
“I didn’t spend much. Don’t worry.”
“I can do this all day long.” Adelaide shrugged skillfully.
While being so confident, why can’t you beat a Lady Bug or a Shoebill? Maybe it’s because our Adele is so kind. Lisianthus rationalized like a fool.
“By the way, why did we get so many letters? I don’t feel good about this.”
“It seems that most of the senders are newspaper reporters.”
“There’s one from the Dungeon Daily, and there are also other newspapers.” Lisianthus said, looking over the table.
Reporters. It felt ominous. No matter how much she thought about it, it didn’t seem like a good thing to receive so many letters from reporters. Adelaide grabbed the one on top and cut the envelope open with a fingernail.
And the letter she checked contained unbelievable information.
