Chapter 19: The missing Saint
A little further back in time, in the Great Temple.
The search for the saint Evelyn was proving to be more difficult than expected.
The priests had promised to do everything in their power to find Evelyn, not to mention Igna and Oz bowing to them.
There was no way for the people of the capital to know that the priests were looking for someone, so they all pretended to be ordinary people and worked frantically from morning to night – but.
Despite this situation, the third prince, Oz, wonders why he hasn’t been able to gather any useful information about Evelyn’s whereabouts.
Oz and his men then discover the true meaning of the search for the saint. It was the fifth day since Evelyn had left the Great Temple.
“Okay, let’s work together to find Evelyn-sama! Ooh!”
He asked with a smile to the priests who were getting into the spirit.
“How are you all doing with your interviews in the city?”
The priests then gave this answer.
“Have you ever seen a girl who is as lovely and beautiful as an angel?”
“Have you ever seen a beautiful girl that you wanted to protect at first sight?”
“I’m looking for a child of my own who is so pretty that I can’t take my eyes off her without laughing or crying!”
“It’s like this, isn’t it?” And they all rubbed the bridges of their noses in embarrassment.
And the chief priest just “U-mu-mu” and nodded in satisfaction.
(This is not good.) He thought.
Oz looked up to the heavens.
It had been a remarkably unspecific interview. There was no way they could have found Evelyn after such a long search.
Oz consulted with his brother, Igna, and decided to send his and Igna’s bodyguards on a search starting on the fifth day.
If word got out that Evelyn had gone missing, it would be a disaster. They had only informed a few people they trusted about the situation.
But even here there was a problem.
-None of the knights knew Evelyn’s true face.
“So, I would be grateful if you could draw a portrait of Evelyn-sama…”
Oz held out a piece of paper and a pen, and the priests shook their heads in an exaggerated gesture.
“No, we can’t do that!”
“Do you really think that Evelyn-sama’s sketches are going to comfort us?”
“Idolatry is forbidden!”
“No, that’s not what I meant… We don’t know enough about Evelyn-sama”
To begin with, only priests are allowed to freely enter the great temple where the saint resides.
Alex could visit with impunity because he was Evelyn’s fiancé. Mary had a special dispensation because she was Evelyn’s relative; and it was a sacred place that even the king could not enter without permission.
Oz didn’t know much about Evelyn’s hair color or eye color. Neither did his brother, Igna.
“How am I supposed to know what Evelyn looks like?”
“Alex…”
Oz, tired as he was, couldn’t help but laugh.
“Do you understand?” he wanted to say, but he didn’t. For the first time, his brother might be useful.
It had been a long time since his brother had smiled at him, and Alex seemed taken aback.
Then he said something unnecessary.
“She’s a twenty-eight-year-old postulant, yet she looks like a girl no older than herself. She’s mon…”
“I’ll kill you! !”
Alex barely avoided the cane thrown at him by the Chief Priestess; but he was so miserable that he fell on his butt.
Alex rubbed his butt and protested with tears in his eyes.
“Y-you……! I was just telling you the truth!”
“Alex……! No, from this day forward you’re Alextard! I’m going to kill you!”
“There is no element of my real name anymore! Don’t make fun of me!”
“You should be grateful that I named you personally!”
The staff turned on him, and Alex fled the temple with a shout.
“Alextard, you mean……? Is the Chief Priest a genius?”
“This is not the time to be talking about Alextard…”
Oz let out a sigh at the words of the second prince, Igna.
“I told Evelyn to get out of this country. She might have crossed over to a neighboring country by now!”
Oz crossed his arms as Alex ran away, shouting such things.
“No, I don’t know about that. Evelyn-sama must not have had any money either. Since she didn’t have the money for the ship, it’s reasonable to assume that she’s still in this country.”
She is someone who has lived only in this temple since she was brought here at the age of five.
Maybe she hasn’t even left the royal capital.
Or maybe she is involved in some kind of crime – Oz shook his head at the thought.
(At least, I hope she’s okay.)
A few days later, he received a surprising report from a knight who was making his rounds in the royal capital.
He said that a woman claiming to be a saint had appeared in the central square of the royal capital.
