Chapter 22: Sparkle

He was born in the dark.

He can’t see anything. He could not hear anything.

It was horribly stagnant – in such darkness, the creature gave birth to a small voice.

The creature had a black body and golden eyes.

It had supple limbs. It also had a brain.

The people called the creature a “demon.”

The fate of the demon born in the miasma was set from the beginning.

To find humans and attack them. Then they are attacked and killed by humans.

If the demon is fatally wounded, its body will disappear. From the moment they are born, demons run rampant according to their instincts and are eventually killed – that’s how the life of a demon ends.

However, this demon’s life was different.

No matter how badly he was hurt, the demon could not die.

Perhaps it was fortunate that no one noticed the strangeness, but the demon was captured by an ugly petty nobleman and spent his days being slashed and tormented endlessly.

What was even more unfortunate for the demon was that it had a keen sense of pain.

One day, the demon took advantage of a gap in the prison guards and ran outside.

The demon’s right hind leg was injured by a blade and it could not move properly. Still, the demon struggled to escape.

The demon dragged his feet and reached an intricate back alley.

It was as dirty as a prison cell, but the smell of blood was less, and the demon felt somewhat better.

There, the demon found an old woman lying wrapped in a cloth.

“Ah, a pretty cat.”

The demon gave a small snort as he was approached like that.

But the old woman was not afraid, she reached out and stroked the demon’s skinny cheek area and smiled.

“Your eyes are so sparkling and beautiful, aren’t they?”

“… What…… sparkling ?”

The demon was surprised.

Something that sounded like a sound – came out of his throat.

It was awkward, but it was definitely a word. It was very similar to a series of sounds that humans use.

The old woman laughed and replied as if it was obvious.

“It means beautiful.”

She repeated the word “sparkling” over and over, so the demon did the same, making up the words “sparkling , sparkling” and trying his best to remember them.

From then on, the old lady taught him many things.

Old lady was very knowledgeable. She taught the demon how people lived, the difference between nobles and commoners, money, schools, inns, restaurants, churches and meeting places, magic, and saints.

The demon absorbed this knowledge at an astonishing rate and made it his own.

A “saint” is a woman with special powers who is responsible for suppressing the miasma that erupts from underground.

In other words, she is like a natural enemy to demons. If that woman is right in front of him, even if he is a little more special than other individuals, the demon will instantly disappear from his existence.

…I don’t want to see her, the demon thought.

But at the same time, for some reason, he also wanted to see her.

“The current saint is called Evelyn-sama. She is so nice that adults name their unborn children Evelyn…”

Not long after that, the old woman took her last breath. It was the morning of the sixth day after they had met.

The demon buried the motionless old woman in the earth. He picked up a discarded shovel and dug a hole with both hands using the tool.

By that time, the demon was able to take human form.

 ◇◇◇

The encounter was so sudden and fortuitous.

“Um, are you okay…?”

I was walking down an alleyway, dragging my right leg, when I was called out.

I turned around and saw a girl standing in front of me.

She had long silvery-white hair and large green jade eyes.

She was probably about eighteen years old. She was wearing a white dress embroidered with inconspicuous but elegant gold threads, giving her a somewhat unworldly appearance.

-I vividly remember thinking at first glance that she didn’t seem to be just another noblewoman.

The girl, who called herself Evelyn, was surprisingly ignorant.

She claimed to be able to use healing magic, but she didn’t know how valuable that magic was to the world. Perhaps she was more innocent than those children.

(What kind of education did her parents give her…?)

The demon had no parents, but a dead old woman had taken the place of her parents.

Maybe there was no such figure in her life, the demon thought.

But the girl’s words were clear and unyielding.

Her voice was also pleasant to listen to, like a little bird singing lightly.

The next thing he knew, he had forgotten about running away and was absorbed in the conversation.

Then something unexpected happened.

The girl had even healed the wound on his leg that had been eating away at the demon with ease.

It was different from the healing magic the old woman had claimed to have seen before.

The sight of red and black balls flying in the air and golden grains pouring into the wound was astonishing to the demon…. The pain disappeared in an instant.

The image of the brutal aristocrat wielding whips and knives that he had dreamed of every day also became distant.

(Is my memory fading just a little?).

The demon tilted his head, but maybe it was just his imagination.

He let out a breath as he saw the girl excited as if she had just acquired the greatest treasure, even though he had just given her a small amount of money.

(She gets angry easily, she laughs, she gets carried away, she cries, she’s a strange girl)

He thought.

but he decided to cover up the fact that he was laughing at the girl’s silliness.

The girl said that she was planning to stay in the royal capital for a while to earn some money.

The demon wanted to be left alone, but…… For some reason, he couldn’t leave the girl, who seemed foolish and very gullible, alone.

-I found myself asking her out.

“Then why don’t you come and make some money with me?”

At the demon’s suggestion, the girl smiled a big smile and said, “By all means!” She nodded.

If she had any sense of judgment, she wouldn’t agree to such a proposal.

“Right. What’s your name?”

The demon tried to shake his head. Because he didn’t have a name.

Suddenly, the old woman’s face appeared in his mind, and the words came out of his mouth.

“…… Kira”

“That’s a lovely name.”

The girl laughs. The demon thought it was a boring social call and turned away.

The girl didn’t look offended but made a thoughtful gesture, and eventually clapped her hands.

“I see. I get it!”

“……What?”

As if it were obvious.

The girl – Evelyn, she laughed.

“You must be Kira, because your eyes are so sparkly and beautiful!” She smiled.

That smile looked even more beautiful to the demon – Kira.
