Chapter 3

March 20XX. Cheonan.

Maybe, today would be his last day. Thinking so, Lee Geon was lying in the waiting area of a deserted movie theater.

A trailer for a blockbuster movie advertising it’s release in about a week was playing on the screen installed on the wall. On the screen, one bomb thrown by the main character, and the monster hit by the bomb both exploded. Fireworks exploded along with the screaming people.

Despite the fairly loud sound, Lee Geon did not budge an eye as if lying in a cradle. He also ignored the gaze of the cinema staff who was looking at him disapprovingly. What’s with that sound.

It wasn’t a big deal for Lee Geon to use four chairs as a bed regardless of the staff’s gaze. Today was Tuesday, the day of the opening ceremony, and it was currently 9 in the morning, long after school had started. So what if he didn’t go to school on his first day, today could be his last day anyways.

“Amazing, you son of a b*tch.”

Through his closed eyelids, he heard a familiar voice. Exactly on the side of his head. Lee Geon lifted one eyelid to look at the unwelcome person. Instead of ceiling lights, he saw a familiar face dressed in a sky blue suit. The woman was looking down on Lee Geon with a gloomy face that didn’t match her clothes.

“Wow, it’s Team Leader Choi Jinseo.”

Jinseo’s face wrinkled even more at his insincere welcome.

“You’re the only bastard who will do something like this as soon as school starts.”

“Not really, you can find more if you look for it.”

While responding, it didn’t seem like something like that would happen. Jinseo looked down at Lee Geon and touched her forehead for a moment. She was already very tired. She had been running a long way from Seoul since dawn because of this nephew of her.

“How did you know I was here? Stalking?”

“I asked others to keep an eye on you, why! Because you hide like a rat whenever you have time! I heard that you went home yesterday after being absent for more than a month. Where the hell do you go every vacation?”

“I just went to rest.”

“Do you go to a place where you can’t even be tracked?”

“I have to rest while not getting chased.”

“Hey!”

At that moment, the eyes of the ticket office staff focused on Jinseo. Only then did Jinseo realize that this wasn’t the right place to talk. She had to calm her mind and move to a different location. In order to do that, the arrogant guy in front of her had to follow also

Jinseo scanned through Lee Geon’s body as if reviewing documents. A noticeable blue padded jacket, a winter uniform jacket that is either not visible or not worn, a loose dark blue tie, and a shirt that is roughly buttoned up. There was no such thing as a neat corner, but it was obviously a school uniform.

“Why did you wear your school uniform when you aren’t even going to school?”

“I had a video call with my sister in the morning. She said she wanted to see if I would go to school or not. And as soon as I hung up, I ran away.”

“You’re good, you punk.”

“Thank you.”

Jinseo nervously checked the time. She had a lot of work to do besides this. So there was no time to waste on useless conversations.

“Let’s switch locations first. Let’s talk for a second.”

“What time is it now?”

“It’s been less than an hour.”

“Of course it would be. Someone says an hour is a second.”

Shouldn’t we engrave patience 300 times instead of three? Talking to Lee Geon felt harder than dealing with a backlog of work overnight. In the end, Jinseo couldn’t stand it and kicked the seat Lee Geon was laying on. Seeing that the kick was fierce, it was clear that Team Leader Choi’s condition was bad today. Which meant he couldn’t deceive her.

Only then did Lee Geon, who got up, stood facing Jinseo. Contrary to the past, this time Lee Geon was the one looking down on Jinseo.

When they first met, the top of his head barely reached her waist, but when did he grow this much? He was even taller than a year ago when they last saw each other. At that time, she thought he had properly grown up, but it seemed he still had some more room for growth left. Jinseo felt strange and disgusted at the same time.

“Can’t we buy something to eat before we talk?”

“Do whatever you want.”

She sat down after answering, she thought he wouldn’t listen to her anyways. Lee Geon hummed and made his way to a nearby fast food restaurant. As soon as he entered, he looked relentless while ordering from an unmanned machine.

Jinseo waited for Lee Geon to finish the order, and after that, she even showed her sincerity by picking up the meal in his stead. Seeing her do that, it seems Vinnic firmly told her to somehow persuade him. Jinseo herself knew that doing that wouldn’t change anything. As always, his plan was to eat well and run away. It’s just that Jinseo was in a difficult situation, so there was nothing else she could do.

“Here.”

Jinseo, who hadn’t given up despite being bullied by him for several years, came back. Put the set down in front of Lee Geon and personally put a straw in the coke. Such service was too much. Lee Geon swallowed his snort and drank the coke.

Sitting across from him, Jinseo watched Lee Geon’s meal with her chin clenched at an angle. Her tired eyes scanned Lee Geon’s face. For example, his brown hair that had faded and became lighter, double eyelids hanging only on the right eye, piercing marks on the earlobe that had not healed, and agility that cannot be hidden even with frivolous behavior.

“Lee Geon.”

At the low call, Lee Geon stiffened with his mouth open. This wasn’t how she usually called him. Especially with such a strange call. It wasn’t like Team Leader Choi.

“Don’t call out to me in such a cheesy way, I feel like I will throw up.”

“What are you talking about all of a sudden?”

“You set the mood by lowering your voice.””

“This is my original voice.”

“No. Even though you’re a woman, you talk like a stranger. You know what I mean, right? In a historical drama, with a mustache….”

“I know. I know so just listen.”

Jinseo rubbed her cheek, which had been completely extinguished in a few days. She desperately needed caffeine. Maybe they should have added coffee to their earlier order. Jinseo asked, holding her chin with the hand that was rubbing it. It was a question that was more annoying than the work that had been bothering her the last few days.

“The test…… will you take it?”

As soon as he heard the question, Lee Geon burst into laughter. It was an expected question, but he didn’t think he would get to hear it without a single error.

“I already gave you the answer during the interview.”

“It’s a must-take test for beginners in graduation class. Being stubborn like this won’t work. Until when are you going to keep fighting with Vinnic? Do you think Vinnic will go easy on you? This is the last time I am coming to persuade you. When you become an adult, it won’t end with just a conversation. The more you do this, the harder it gets for you. So just this year, please, do as you are told. Okay?

Confirming that there was no one else in the store, Jinseo begged earnestly. This was something he heard and rejected for years. But whether it was years ago or now, there was only one answer that came back.

“I don’t want to.”

All youth superhumans belonging to Vinnic took the test. No, everyone wanted to see it if they would be given a chance. It was an essential process to be recognized for their abilities.

If recognized, they could belong to various organizations that want them and be assigned to special duties. That’s how one took the first step in society as a superman. While being praised by the public, who call them heroes.

He was not interested in those things. He didn’t want to be recognized with a test given by Vinnic. Why should he obediently follow Vinnic’s words when he thought that f*cking them over was the most fun thing? Whether he took the test or not, Vinic wouldn’t let him go.

It’s not that he didn’t want to take the test due to personal feelings.

“Don’t you think I don’t take the exam not because I don’t want to, but because I can’t?”

After a moment of silence, Lee Geon whispered in a low voice.

“You? Why?”

“Because of the biggest problem.”

Lee Geon picked up two french fries with that answer. One that had ketchup and the other without ketchup.

“You have to form a group first to take the test. At least four to five. An appropriate mix of ‘divergence’ and ‘convergence’ types. You know what the prerequisites are, right?”

Lee Geon shook the fries in his hands.

“Equity.”

Divergent and convergent. The teacher in charge of Lee Geon compared them to ‘spears and shields’. Although there were many leaps, the analogy itself wasn’t wrong at all. Because the characteristics of each other were too different to be tied together. Therefore, the divergent type and the convergent type did not receive the same training even though they were grouped into the same superhuman type.

The basic ability of the divergence type was the ‘divergence’ of superpowers. It’s basic characteristic was to express the superpowers, whether it was psychokinesis or clairvoyance. However, the convergent type did not possess any of the superpowers registered in Vinnic. Considering the convergent ability, it would be seen as a defense, because the superpowers of the divergent type did not work on the convergent type. The convergent type could even control the divergent type’s superpower.

A superhuman who couldn’t work with superpowers and could invalidate the opponent’s superpower. As if absorbing all the pouring attacks. That was the decisive reason as to why the convergent type was called convergent. This was why superhumans who were about to become adults formed groups. On the battlefield, it was more advantageous to fight with spears and shields in both hands than to fight one by one

And the prerequisites for this. Equity.

“The average level of teenage rookies is 4, and the highest level is 5, but I’m level 7, so it causes a problem wherever I am placed. You have to form groups with similar people to create balance, but level 4 and 7 aren’t similar at all. That means I can’t get assigned to a previous group, and if I don’t get assigned to a group, I can’t take the test alone without the divergent type, right?”

He ate the french fries he was holding in one bite. He chewed and crushed it so that you couldn’t tell which was the divergent, and which was the convergent type

“TIt’s not fair.”

After a small laugh, Lee Geon deliberately sucked and drank his coke loudly. Jinseo, who he thought would nag right away, surprisingly didn’t say anything. No, it might have been better not to talk.

“If that’s your problem, you don’t have to worry.”

“Why?”

“I found a kid to take the exam with you.”

Jinseo picked up the fries in front of him. And instead of eating it, she dipped it in ketchup and shook it like crazy.

“Although it’s only one person.”

Lee Geon put down the coke he was drinking. He couldn’t believe what he heard so he had to check again. Being able to take the test with him was saying….

“There’s a level 7 divergent type?”

“Yes.”

The inside of the store felt like it went quiet in an instant. Because he focused only on Jinseo’s words, which he had previously ignored. Lee Geon, who was pondering Jinseo’s words, soon smiled crookedly.

“Team leader, are you cheating now?”
