87 The Quirky Sister (1 / 2)

From noble mtl dot come

In the hospital corridor, filled with the smell of disinfectant, it irritates the nostrils.

Someone crosses the polished floor, enters the nephrology office, and greets the doctor inside.

“Dr. Du.”

The middle-aged doctor in a white coat looks up, smiles for a moment when he sees Fang Zhou.

“Fang Zhou, you’re here, have a seat!”

This Dr. Du is Fang Zhou’s sister’s attending physician, also well-known domestically. About half a year ago, Fang Zhou brought his sister from their hometown to the capital, all for Dr. Du’s reputation.

Fang Zhou nodded and sat down, asking in a deep voice, “How has my sister been lately?”

Calculating the time, it had been ten days since his last visit to the hospital.

Back then, he was ecstatic to have secured the 500,000 through his program participation, imploring Dr. Du to find a matching kidney donor.

Dr. Du flipped open his work log, showing Fang Zhou the page on Fang Wenjing’s condition.

“The recent dialysis sessions have gone well, with no adverse reactions.”

Fang Zhou breathed a sigh of relief, then asked, “Any news about a kidney match for my sister?”

Dr. Du shook his head, truthfully informing him.

“We haven’t found a suitable kidney for your sister yet; we can only continue to wait.”

“However, your sister’s condition is relatively stable for now, so there’s no need for excessive worry.”

Fang Zhou was somewhat disappointed, but it was within his expectations.

“Please continue to keep an eye out for me. I’ve been quite busy with work lately, so if there are any changes, please call me.”

Dr. Du nodded solemnly, “That’s my duty.”

After discussing Fang Wenjing’s condition for a while longer, another patient came in.

Dr. Du said to Fang Zhou:

“Your sister should be almost done with her dialysis; you can wait a bit.”

Following his advice, Fang Zhou went to the door of his sister’s dialysis room. Through the window on the door, he could see inside.

There lay his sister, Fang Wenjing, obediently on the hospital bed, with two tubes inserted into her right arm, red blood flowing within.

This was blood dialysis.

One tube drew blood from the patient’s body, sending it to the machine to remove excess toxins and fluid, then returned it to the body through another tube.

A seemingly simple process, yet many patients endure it thousands of times over, until death.

The pain of blood draws and needle pricks turns many from fear to numbness, and eventually, even PTSD, preferring death over enduring such agony.

A few unfortunate yet fortunate ones no longer need lifelong dialysis after a kidney transplant, but treatment must continue.

Already frail, his sister’s appetite worsened after falling ill, often vomiting after eating, now looking even thinner.

A small bundle, she lay quietly on the bed, not crying or fussing even without family by her side.

Fang Zhou’s eyes reddened instantly, his heart aching unbearably, he quickly turned away, unable to bear the sight.

“A man’s tears are not easily shed, only at the deepest sorrow.”

If possible, he would rather bear this pain himself than let his young sister endure it.

She was still so young, with so many beautiful things in the world yet unseen, now confined to this small corner of the hospital.

A caged bird at least has a chance to spread its wings, but his sister… without a kidney transplant, she would never have that chance again.

At this moment, this tall man felt incredibly small, as if under the whims of fate, one could only accept its arrangements.

But Fang Zhou quickly regained his spirits.

“It’s okay, we have the money now, right? Just waiting for a kidney donor, and my sister will be reborn.”

“What crappy fate,” Fang Zhou refused to believe, determined to shatter this damned destiny.

“Eh? Boss Fang, you’re back?”

A middle-aged woman’s voice rose from behind, filled with curiosity and wonder.

She was the caretaker he had hired for his sister, responsible for cooking and cleaning at home, as well as ferrying his sister to the hospital.

Fang Zhou paid her ten thousand a month, and she usually addressed him as Boss Fang.

He quickly composed himself, turned around, and flashed a smile at the middle-aged woman.

“Auntie Wei, good to see you. I came back today. Didn’t see you at home, so I came to the hospital.”

Auntie Wei was the one Fang Zhou had chosen after screening several candidates.

After observing her for a week, he found her meticulous and responsible, and gentle with his sister.

She even proactively reported on his sister’s schedule, her daily meals, and any symptoms of illness.

It was because of this that Fang Zhou could leave with peace of mind for ten days to half a month.

He didn’t mind being a bit more cordial with Auntie Wei.

After all, everyone’s heart is made of flesh; one can see the things hidden in the details.

Auntie Wei’s smile was simple and genuine, as she planned what to cook for dinner.

“Then I’ll go to the market later and buy a couple more dishes, maybe fry a fish!”

Fang Zhou nodded with a gentle smile, “Anything is fine, you decide.”

“Ah, the boss is back, Wenjing must be so happy! Maybe she’ll eat a bit more at dinner!”

Auntie Wei’s infectious smile unconsciously drew one from Fang Zhou as well.

“Hope she eats a bit more.”

The two chatted happily, and time slipped away. Fang Wenjing’s treatment came to a pause, and she rested in bed.

After getting permission from the nurse, both Fang Zhou and Auntie Wei entered the ward.

Fang Wenjing was originally resting with her eyes closed, hearing footsteps, she thought it was just Auntie Wei and struggled to open her eyes, barely uttering, “Auntie Wei…”

Then she saw Fang Zhou standing quietly in the room, looking at her.

“Brother! You’re back!”

Fang Wenjing’s eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at Fang Zhou.

“You just called, didn’t you say you’d be back tomorrow?”

The girl’s eyes were bright; even ill, she wasn’t dispirited but rather cheerful and lively.

Fang Zhou blinked at her and whispered, “I was just teasing you, to give you a surprise!”

“How do you feel, happy?”

Fang Wenjing laughed heartily, trying to sit up from the bed, but Fang Zhou held her down.

“Don’t move around, you’ve just finished dialysis, lie down for a bit longer.”

Fang Wenjing obediently nodded, her gaze fixed on Fang Zhou, she grinned and playfully asked, “Did you bring me a sister-in-law back?”

She looked young, but her mind was full of mischief. Ever since Fang Zhou turned 25, she had started nagging him about marriage, taking on the role of the parents in a traditional family.

Saying things like, “A man over 25 is of late marriage age, you need to seize the time and opportunities blah blah blah.”

Fang Zhou bent down, gently touched her head, and tenderly said, “No, you little clever spirit, don’t worry about these things.”

She sighed deeply, “Alas! A grown man can’t be kept at home! Trying to keep him only leads to worry!”

Hearing this, Fang Zhou couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

How could she, at such a young age, have so many crooked ideas?
