THAT DAY I BECAME A STAR

Chapter 181 - CHAPTER 181: THE CHURCH’S HIGH COUNCIL (2)

I look at the guy and his eyes are shining yellow. Like K'nor in the middle of the night. Is he trying to intimidate me or something?

"I see. In any case, we will now conduct a trial and judge whether you are a threat to humanity and our goddess or not."

"Where were you born precisely?"

As soon as he finishes speaking, the priest at the far left asks a question.

"Does it matter?" Why would he need to know where I was born?

After I answer, I hear William approaching me then striking my ribs with something, maybe the handle of his sword. Sorry, bud, it doesn't hurt. I barely flinch from his strike.

"Answer only and only the questions asked.. There won't be a next time."

"Right."

"So?" The priest presses again for an answer.

"I was born here in Syldavie."

"Impossible. We have checked all records and there is no Dragonroad as a family name registered in Syldavie."

"I changed my name after my birth."

"Why?"

"Personal matters."

"Which are?"

"It doesn't concern you."

William strikes me again but I don't answer. I strike me another time, and another one then the second priest talks as well.

"Enough."

"Sir…"

"I said enough."

"Yes, sir." William moves back to his position and stands proudly like the dog he is. Which wouldn't be happy to accomplish what he is told like a stupid fool?

"Have you received a blessing from a priest? If so, where was it?"

"In Syldavie as well."

"From the testimonies of the different parties we have consulted, it seemed like you are quite powerful and able to use even elemental Angas but when we have checked your body, we barely felt the goddess's presence. Why?"

The question keeps coming from the priests. Each is more and more complex and difficult to answer while hiding the truth.

***

"Your Holinesses, we have finished."

"Good." After a flurry of harder and harder questions, the priests finally stop but just when I thought it is over, she takes the floor as well.

"Then, I would like to know something that bothers me a lot. You seem to hate me but is it as Saintess or as a person."

"For somebody like you to be called a Saintess is already a joke in itself so…"

William approaches once again, but Rebecca raises her hand and I can hear him grunting between his teeth while he goes back to his place. That's a good doggy. I hope she will give you a bone later.

"I see. So, it is as a person. I would like to ask you in which circumstances we have come to know each other for you to bear such grudges towards me but I suppose you wouldn't tell me."

"You suppose right. What is in the past should be left to the dead after all." I decided to let you and your dog live your fake happy life. But still, it doesn't mean I shouldn't hate you.

"Why? It's only by looking at our past mistakes that we can improve and become better every day."

"If you keep looking behind, how will you prevent the arrow that comes from the front?"

"If you keep looking forward, you won't know what hit you from the back."

"You were simply too weak then. And that will be that." Just like you two.

"Is it your experience speaking?"

"Why don't you ask your doggy over there?"

"What?!!" William jumps at my remark and reaches me in an instant, grabbing my head and pinning me on the floor.

"I told you there wouldn't be a next time." I see his eyes are full of rage as he raised his sword, ready to behead me. Yeah, let's do this doggy.

"STOP!!" Right before I use Angas or William lowers his sword, Rebecca's voice resounds and freezes us both in place. What power is that? My body doesn't answer to my thoughts at all.

"S-Saintess. This guy… is dangerous. Not killing him now…will certainly… bring harm to you."

"I said enough. Lower your sword."

"Saintess…Please…"

"I said. Lower.Your.Sword."

Finally, William lowers his sword and my body restarts answering normally. Then he lifts me up and bows down to Rebecca.

"I am sorry for my behavior."

"I forgive you. But don't forget that I dislike bloodshed. And the pope still hasn't rendered his judgment."

"YES! SAINTESS!"

He goes back and stands once again. What a faithful dog you have, Rebecca.

"I have finished as well."

"I see."

Rebecca talks to the weird pope with the weird hat then he stands up. Everyone else dos the same.

"Kevin Dragonroad."

He looks at me coldly, his shining yellow eyes more menacing than before.

"Yeah?"

"It's your holiness, fucker." I hear William whispering something but I don't care.

"I, Devian, the 207th Pope of the church of MEETIA, from the different trials and facts submitted to me, judge you not guilty of the charges you have been accused of."

"What?!"

William goes 'what' behind me but the sharp glare of the pope brings him back to reality. Hope you felt this one, bastard.

"However, considering your current feelings towards the Saintess, which aren't acceptable, you will be observed during a certain period of time by the church's agents. If at any point, we deem you to be a threat. You will be swiftly dealt with."

Shit, I would have preferred to be guilty instead.

"That's all."

The pope turns and leaves, followed by the Saintess then the other priests. When they seem to have all left, William strikes the wall of the place so hard it breaks, creating a huge fault that almost reaches the ceiling.

He turns around, ready to leave but I call him.

"Hey, remove those first." You didn't think I would let you go like that, did you?

Doggy doesn't turn but instead squeezes the keys with great strength and launches them at me. I catch them but they are barely useable anymore. Still…

"Thanks, doggy."

William's ears turn red as he leaves the place, followed by the knights. Only the priests remain with me.

"Can anybody help me?"
