Graziano who had lost his mother at age 4, and had no other to rely on, had continued to live on his own.

Living in the slums, should have been unbelievable difficult for a small child. And yet, Graziano had not once resented his father who had abandoned his mother.

Because the mother who had so earnestly raised him continued to think about his father till her very last breath.

Brown tea coloured hair and red eyes like his own. And the silver bird wing-shaped brooch, that was a pair with the brooch that his mother had always treasured the most.

Recognizing the features that he himself seemed to share with the man, he realized that this man was almost certainly his father.

The small Graziano desperately ran after his father.

At that moment, he wasn’t even thinking of asking for help from him. He didn’t want the man to take him into his family, and neither did he want money or food from him.

He simply, wanted to talk. He wanted to tell him something.

That his mother continued to love him till her dying breath. That she said, that she was glad to have met him. And that Graziano himself was happy to have been born as her son, which was also thanks to that man in a way.

As long as he was able to tell all that, Graziano didn’t want anything else after that.

But the elegantly dressed man that was his father, first looked down at the poor child with pity, and then suddenly gasped in surprise.

The very next instant, his eyes changed. As if he was looking at literal trash, he glared at Graziano and then shouted at his attendants beside him.

[HEY! This brat is trying to steal my wallet!]

[Eh……….]

Graziano simply stood there in shock. In the eyes of his father, he could only see pure disgust for him and nothing more.

[It’s a problem to have such dirty kids running around near my mansion.——Send a messenger to the Ranieri family! That there’s an orphan going around robbing people in their territory!]

The slums Graziano lived in, as well as the mansion his father lived in, were both located in the territory of the Ranieri family, one of the 5 great families.

And so, the members of the Ranieri family relentlessly and mercilessly punished the small Graziano.

Graziano was brought close to death, and barely escaped alive into the Calvino family territory where finally, he got picked up by Francesca’s father.

(I haven’t actually heard this all explained to me directly from Graziano but…….when you deepen the bond with him in the game, an event revealing all this gets unlocked which is how I know all this.)

Francesca endured her desire to turn around to look at him, and instead stared at her father’s back instead.

(It seems both Papa and Luka-sama already knew about this as well. That’s why they both have chosen Graziano as the person responsible for dealing with this task, this assassination warning……….)

This point was the same as it how it was in the game.

(The game’s second chapter. To stop the assassination plot against Graziano’s father, the episode involves the protagonist and Graziano working together to solve this but………)

Francesca sent a quick glance towards the person standing diagonally ahead of her.

(After the big change of me and Graziano being childhood friends in this life now, the second biggest change when compared to the game is………..the fact that Leonardo is also here…….)

Just as she thinking of these things, said Leonardo chuckled and spoke up.

“May I ask a question? Luka-sama?”

(Leonardo..)

Even when facing the king himself, he never showed even an ounce of nervousness, and was acting as always.

Francesca too had come to meet Luka alongside her father many times since the time she was very young.

However, Leonardo had become the family head at merely 10yrs old, and had probably come here to face Luka all by himself many times before this. Even though simply standing before the king made you feel a lot of pressure, he didn’t let it seem like it was affecting him one bit.

“From the fact that the Ranieri family was not called for this incident and the fact that the watchdog is here, I have more or less figured it out but still………”

(So Leonardo already figured it out too? That the reason why Graziano was called is because he’s the illegitimate child of the Marquis who is being targeted…….)

She was surprised by his ridiculous ability of perception and insight but, Leonardo simply laughed nonchalantly as he continued to speak.

“Why was I called here as well? Perhaps…….”

“Umu.”

King Luka smiled, and then replied.

“This assassination plot; I order both the Aldini family and the Calvino family to work together in the investigation of this matter.”

(Our families, together!?)

Francesca’s eyes widened with surprise hearing that.

(This obviously did not happen in the game. After all, even this assassination plot was deemed to be another one of Leonardo’s schemes in the game’s scenario……..)

Of course, now Francesca knew that that was not the case in actuality.

But that said, if in the episode that is to come, if [Leonardo investigating together] is an added fact, just how much will the following events change? She couldn’t even imagine right now.

“Your wish is my command, your majesty.”

Leonardo accepted his words, and then turned to look at Francesca’s father.

“I imagine Calvino family has their own opinion on this matter as well but, do you have any problems with the current arrangement?”

“………Since when did you start talking to me in such a manner? I don’t recall ever hearing you sound so respectful towards me.”

“Well, I mean I figured I should at least sound a little more obedient towards my future father-in-law right? Also, I simply made it a policy to show you a little more respect than before at the very least.”

Against her father’s displeasure filled voice, Leonardo response was light-hearted as usual. And after that, he turned to look at Francesca.

“………I have decided to treasure those that my beloved fiancée treasures as well, that’s all.”

“! Leonardo…….!!”

His smile was simply so unbelievably sweet and gentle, that Francesca inadvertently gulped.

(It’s true that we have decided to stick with the original [Betrothed] relationship when in front of Papa and Graziano but still…..!!)

Francesca and Leonardo were genuine friends, first and foremost.

But to her father, him being [daughter’s future husband due to a political arrangement] than [the male friend the daughter made out of her own will] was somehow a much more acceptable relationship in her father’s head. So they had kept the fact that they were legit close friends a secret from her father.

“It’s  a rare chance to show off to my future wife, I can’t help but be eager about it all. We will use the full strength of the Aldini family to fulfil His Majesty’s orders.”

“Hahahah, I look forward to it Leonardo. It’s rare to see you go all out after all. I have great expectations from you.”

“——Wait a moment please.”

At that moment, the person who spoke up was the man standing quietly behind Francesca all this time, Graziano.

(Graziano………as expected, this situation is very complicated for him after all.)

Even in the game’s scenario, Graziano continued to be conflicted over whether he should even interact with his father again, or whether he should save him no matter what.

Of course, to solve this dilemma was deemed as something necessary by Luka and her father, to help Graziano grow. But to Francesca who was like his big sis, it made her heart ache regardless.

(If he’s against this situation, I want to tell him that it’s okay to not force himself to handle it. Normally, this is something I’d rather say afterwards but, I don’t want him to feel compelled to accept this right now either.)

Francesca turned around, and called to him in a very quiet voice.

“Graziano, hey, if you don’t want to………”

“………..Luka-sama, Boss, may I consult something with you all here?”

“Hmm?”

Speak up, Luka gestured with his chin. Graziano first thanked him for obliging, and then spoke in a very clear voice.

“I understand that you have ordered us to [investigate in cooperation] with the Aldini family but, I……..”

Graziano’s eyes glared directly at Leonardo.

“——rather than work together with young miss’ fiance , I would rather we made this into a ‘Duel’ competing against them instead.”

“…….EH!?!”

“Ohh?”

Even though they were in front of the king, Francesca couldn’t help but exclaim loudly hysterically.
