The Blue Eyes
Chapter 149 - ANDRE'S BRAVERY
["So, you are Kevin's best friend?" Jack asked the human who was sitting with a terrified expression on the wet ground in front of him.
He just kidnapped the human when the human just walked out of the laboratory. Without a hassle, he successfully brought the human to the forest. The wet leaves' smell dominated the atmosphere, not to mention the wet soils that also gave off an earthy smell that was pleasant to the nose.
The place was dark, and there was no artificial lighting in the place. The dense trees didn't even let the moonlight penetrate them to give some light to the two men underneath them. Jack didn't find it as an obstacle, though. He could see clearly in the pitch-black night without any difficulty. His red eyes were like twin red stars that twinkled in the darkness.
"H-how come you know about Kevin?" The human in front of him asked with his shaky voice.
Jack smirked as he answered, "I know him because I tried to eat him some time ago. Unfortunately, I failed."
Jack could see how the human in front of him grew tenser upon hearing his answer. He smirked even more as he enjoyed the sight when a human was afraid of him.
"What... what do you want from me?" Once again, the human asked him another question.
Jack didn't respond. Instead, he walked closer to the human and grabbed the human's chin, forcing the human to look up at him. "I want you to replace Kevin's place in my stomach," he replied as he started piercing the human's skin with his sharp fingernails. "Another werewolf has been guarding Kevin, so it's difficult for me to touch him. Now, I just want to make him feel the pain when he lost his closest comrade."
The human's body started trembling when he heard Jack's answer, and Jack was enjoying the show even more.
"Just leave Kevin alone," the human suddenly replied, and the reply stunned Jack. "If you want to eat me, then just eat me, but please leave Kevin alone."
Jack couldn't believe what he just heard. He seemed to hear the most ridiculous thing in the world, and he couldn't help but laugh. "You are willing to sacrifice yourself for Kevin?" He asked in an amused tone.
"Yes," the human answered. "Kevin has been living a miserable life in the past seventeen years. It's not fair for him if you just kill him before he can get real happiness in his life. I want him to find the love in his life and experience a happy life for once."]
"That was what Andre said to me before I killed him," Jack finished his story as he lowered his head. He didn't dare to look at Kevin beside him.
Kevin was speechless. His face turned pale, and his body trembled a little. He also could feel the wetness in his eyes. He didn't expect that Andre was willing to sacrifice himself to save him. The guilty feeling started to attack his conscience, and the attack weakened his physic.
"Andre shouldn't have died like that. He had a wife, and he would be a father soon. How could he sacrifice himself for me?" Kevin whispered sorrowfully.
If Andre was still there, Kevin surely would ask that question to him. Not only asking him that question, but he also would hit Andre's head with a stack of documents to make the latter sane again.
Jack finally turned to him but still didn't say anything. His face was also painted with guilty colors. He was a bad werewolf, a very bad werewolf.
"Why did you kill him, Jack? He's the nicest man I've ever met. He didn't offend you, did he? Why did you still insist on preying him when he was that nice?"
Jack ducked his head again. Kevin's questions were like sharp needles that pierced his heart into pieces.
"You should have just left him alone and come to me again if you hated me, Jack! Why didn't you do that?"
Jack's body shrunk under Kevin's miserable tone. The tone was like a witch spell that turned him into a dwarf. But, Kevin was not the real witch here. He was the real witch who had turned many people's life into hell.
"I'm sorry, Kevin. If I could pay Andre's soul with mine, then I would do it right now."
Kevin suddenly laughed in a mocking tone after he heard Jack's statement. "You said that because you know that it is impossible," he replied coldly. "I hate you, Jack. I hate you so much, but I hate myself more. I hate myself for not being able to save my best friend. I hate myself for being a weak human back then."
Jack turned to Kevin again and replied, "Just hate me, Kevin." He gave Kevin a stern look. "I'm just a selfish creature who couldn't let go of my childhood trauma and turned into a monster. It's all my fault, so you don't need to blame yourself. I will come to Andre's wife and ask her to punish me if that can make you feel better."
Kevin looked at Jack and frowned. "Didn't I say to you that I would give you a second chance?" He asked. "I hate you, but I won't change my mind. I will still give you a second chance, Jack. It may take some time for me to completely forgive you, but I don't want to see you die."
Jack was speechless, and he stared at Kevin with a mixed gaze. There were admiration, guilty, and regret in the gaze.
"You are too nice, Kevin," Jack stated as he shifted his gaze away from the other man. "You are too nice to the point you look so stupid!" He laughed dryly.
Kevin snorted at the statement. "I just want to bring peace in this world," he replied. "If I let you and Julia fight each other, then I fail to make Andre's wish comes true."
Hearing Andre's name being mentioned by the other man, Jack's expression turned gloomy again. "Andre also asked me about something strange right before I bit his neck."
Kevin frowned and gazed at Jack with a look full of questions. "What did he ask you?" He asked. He couldn't believe that Andre was still able to speak lots of things when he was already on the ropes. Andre's bravery was truly admirable.
Jack looked at Kevin again and blinked his eyes slowly. "He asked me if it was possible to make a pact between mankind and werewolves," he answered casually. His tone was normal, but his face was filled with guilt.
Jack's answer confused Kevin. He was confused about whether he should cry or laugh after he heard the answer.
The innocent Andre indeed asked that question when he met a werewolf. More or less, Kevin felt guilty. He was the one who suggested Andre to ask that question when he met a werewolf, but he was just joking at that time. Why did Andre do that for real?
"I laughed at his question at that time. I said to him that mankind and werewolves couldn't cooperate," Jack spoke again. "But he was unfazed by my rebuke and just smiled at me. He said that some werewolves would cooperate with humans someday. And yeah, what he said had come true. I and Kris are now cooperating with humans. It feels funny but tragic at the same time."
Jack was laughing, but there was a pain in his laugh. It seemed that he was laughing at his miserable self.
"It's okay, Jack," Kevin replied. "At least, one of Andre's dreams comes true with you two cooperating with us. Andre must be smiling in heaven right now."
Kevin tried to look at the situation from a positive point of view. He knew that his anger and his hatred would never bring Andre back to the world. He hated Jack, but he couldn't change anything that had happened in the past. Even if he killed Jack right now, it wouldn't make him be able to turn back time to save Andre.
Jack shook his head and leaned his tired body on the back of the sofa. Today was indeed a tiring day for him. He then glanced at Kevin's wounded hand and asked, "When will you visit the hospital? Does your hand still hurt?"
Kevin lifted his bandaged hand and examined it. "It's not that hurt anymore," he answered. "I'll just go to the hospital when it stings again." He then turned to Jack as he smiled mischievously. "Are you worried about me, Jack?"
Jack's face flushed at the question. He quickly straightened his back and backed away when Kevin started bending his body toward him. The distance was so dangerous, their thighs were touching each other, and Kevin's stomach almost made contact with Jack's stomach.
And suddenly, the front door was slammed open by someone from outside. That someone widened their eyes in surprise.
"WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?"
That scream echoed in the previously quiet living room.
