#331 - Go deep into the dangerous place
‘That's also the most dangerous place!’ Aqualad said seriously. ‘The other party placed that plan in the deepest part of the research institute, which is enough to prove its importance.’
‘I don’t think we can get out of there unscathed with just a few of us.’
Aqualad’s words made a lot of sense. Unlike Kid Flash, who remained unmoved, Speedy was already wavering. After all, the visual impact of those gene mutations was very real. Although Speedy wasn’t afraid of danger, knowingly facing such a large disparity in strength wasn’t bravery.
‘Maybe we should just go back obediently.’ Speedy suggested.
‘I think so too.’ Megan's voice also chimed in at this moment. ‘I feel like I'm about to be exposed. If you guys don't come back, Mr. Yang Le will definitely find out.’
‘Robin, you're not taking us to complete a mission, you're taking us to die.’
Faced with Wally and Megan's persuasion and Aqualad's reprimand, Robin remained silent for a while before responding.
‘Maybe you're right.’ Robin took out his microcomputer and reconnected it to the elevator, seemingly swayed by Aqualad.
Aqualad breathed a sigh of relief. If Robin still refused to listen, he might have to use force to take him away. Aqualad also quietly glanced at Kid Flash, who had witnessed the entire process but remained silent the whole time. It was as if he had become silent ever since entering the Cadmus Labs.
Aqualad didn't delve into it. After all, they had only known each other for less than two days and weren't truly familiar with each other yet. Aqualad figured that Kid Flash was probably just this silent during missions.
‘Crap!’ Robin's anxious voice suddenly rang out.
‘What happened?’ Kid Flash asked immediately.
‘I can't hack into the elevator's operating system.’ Robin frowned. ‘Someone has locked the elevator's operating system. The elevator can only descend to sublevel fifty-two now.’
‘Looks like the other side wants to trap us like turtles in a jar.’ Kid Flash said abruptly. ‘I bet there will be a lot of gene mutations waiting for us as soon as we open the door.’
Everyone fell silent. Kid Flash's words seemed reasonable to them. As for the idea that Robin was pretending not to be able to hack in, any smart person wouldn't think in that direction.
‘Megan, notify Mr. Yang Le. Everyone else, prepare for battle.’ Aqualad drew out his water bearers from his back, and the others also began to check their equipment, preparing for a desperate fight.
No one blamed Robin. At this time, blaming each other was the most useless thing to do. It was better to find a way to break the situation or hold out until the guardians arrived on the scene.
The floor display changed little by little, and soon they arrived at the deepest part of Cadmus Labs, sublevel fifty-two. Everyone stood ready, preparing to face the upcoming hard battle.
With a ding, the elevator doors slowly opened. Everyone rushed out of the elevator as quickly as possible to avoid being trapped inside, but unexpectedly, there wasn't a monster army waiting for them outside the elevator. Other than the crimson tunnel and some lighting facilities, there was nothing else.
Everyone looked at each other, at a loss for a moment, unsure whether to hold their weapons or put them away.
‘What do we do now?’ Kid Flash scratched his head. ‘Are we going back?’
Robin looked back at the elevator and said, ‘Then we might have to wait for the next elevator.’
Everyone turned around and found that the elevator doors had closed at some point. Looking at the floor display, it was clear that the elevator had been called up and had already left sublevel fifty-two.
‘Let's go find Project Kr.’ Kid Flash said abruptly. ‘Since there's no turning back, we might as well get the task at hand done first. There's no point in staying here anyway. I don't think the people coming out of the elevator later will let us take the elevator back.’
Robin and Kid Flash didn't say anything and looked at Aqualad, who had become the leader of this team without them realizing it.
Aqualad thought for a moment and said, ‘Okay, let's continue forward. Even if it's just to buy some time, it's better than nothing.’
Under Aqualad's command, everyone advanced while staying vigilant, but they soon stopped because a fork in the road appeared before them.
‘Weird Road Number One, Weird Road Number Two.’ Wally pointed to the two roads in front of him. ‘Which one should we take now?’
Before everyone could make a decision, a gene mutation walked out of the road on the left. This gene mutation was different from the ones they had seen before. Unlike his compatriots, who were naked, he was wearing a white, surgical gown-like outfit.
“Stop!”
The white-robed mutation raised his right hand, and his long horns, which were far more slender than those of his fellow mutations, glowed red. The debris in the corner floated up at the same time and flew towards the Young Justice League at an extremely fast speed.
“Run!” Aqualad shouted and took the lead in running towards the fork on the right. After all, the road on the left was blocked by the gene mutation, and who knew if there were other mutations over there. At this time, the empty right side was undoubtedly the best choice.
The other members of the Young Justice League also followed and ran to the right. Strangely, the white-robed mutation didn't chase after them, but only used telekinesis to control the debris and smash it at everyone. After smashing it around, not only did it not hit anyone, but it also made the ground a mess, leaving no place to stand.
At this time, Guardian led a group of Talon mutations, surrounded by a researcher in a white coat, and ran over. The researcher calmed his breath and asked.
“Where are those kids?”
“They went to Project Kr.” The white-robed mutation pointed to the road on the right. “I can't stop them alone.”
“Useless thing.” The researcher scolded harshly, and after scolding, he didn't look at the white-robed mutation again, but led the Guardian and the remaining mutations to continue chasing.
Looking at the disappearing figures in front of him, a complex emotion flashed in the red eyes of the white-robed mutation. He stayed for a moment before slowly following.
Among the fleeing crowd, Kid Flash took the lead. He quickly saw a heavy metal security door that was open. A black-skinned female researcher walked out of it, holding a notebook in her hand and writing as she walked.
“Excuse me!” Kid Flash moved the female researcher aside before she could react. Seeing the metal door that was slowly closing, Kid Flash immediately pulled a heavy metal building material from the pile of building materials next to him and wedged it between the door that was about to close.
“Hurry up!” Kid Flash waved to the people behind him, and led everyone to run to the front before drilling into the door. The others followed suit and drilled in.
Unlike the tunnel outside that was still being built, the inside of the security door was a completed laboratory. In the center of the room was an opaque, man-sized glass jar, and in front of the glass jar were many instruments.
