Episode 2: Adelia, the Penguin (I)

Maybe that’s why my dad gave me the name ‘Adelia’, after the Adelie penguin.

This world was in a novel that I had read before I died in my previous life, and thanks to this, I remembered the contents up to the part I read to some extent.

It was a good thing for me, who often forgot the name of the main character of the novel I was reading right after.

‘But should I really consider this a good thing…?’

In fact, having only read till the middle of the work, I didn’t know the characters clearly; I just knew it was a romance novel.

The overall atmosphere was not exhausting, but the heroine was so unhappy in her situation.

In such a novel, did the author have to inappropriately include a penguin that should be living in Antarctica?

‘No matter how much you like penguins, it shouldn’t be like this.’

‘If you really wanted to write it, you should at least make it a penguin Suin.’

‘What if a reader possessed a penguin while reading… like me!’

Fortunately, as long as the conditions were met, even ordinary animals could become Suin in this worldview.

There was only one condition.

—Desperation to be human.

However, the standard of ‘desperation’ was so high that it seemed impossible.

I thought that I desperately wanted to become a human, but I guess I didn’t pass the threshold.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t become a human.

Well, these four years of living as a penguin weren’t that bad.

As in any novel, I received a lot of love from my new family that I did not receive in my life before possession.

No, I died in my previous life and was born here as a penguin, so the word ‘reincarnation’ rather than ‘possession’ might be more appropriate.

My dad loved me wholeheartedly, who was born from the eggs he obtained for research.

Even if I did nothing, food appeared when mealtime came, and my dad, a wizard, provided the best environment for me, a penguin, to live.

If there had to be a complaint in such a peaceful penguin life, then… It’s Suradel.

He was the only one.

“So this is the penguin that Lord Reynos said he could not live without.”

When I saw Suradel for the first time, my eyes trembled wide at the unhuman appearance.

Fairly curly silver hair that shone brightly, and yellow eyes that looked like amber stones dipped in gold. And red, cat-like curved eyes.

But at the same time, because of this beauty, I was able to come to my senses.

This was a face that could never be an extra.

It also bothered me that the House of Weil, which was not even mentioned in the original, was a family that dominated the continent here.

The House of Weil was too influential to be omitted without a mention in the original work.

No matter how bad my memory was, I couldn’t have forgotten this rare whale family.

Of course, I read the original only up to the middle, so it could have appeared in the second half.

However, there was other conclusive evidence that the original was wrong.

In the original story, only pure-blooded humans could generate mana in their body and use magic.

But ironically, the Weil was a family that specialized in magic.

So when I saw Suradel’s appearance, I couldn’t help but feel more confident.

‘There’s definitely a cliché.’

Besides, it was very suspicious that he was a silver-haired killer whale.

If it was a killer whale, it should have a mixture of black and white hair, like Madam Bella, the owner of Weil.

Anyone could tell that there was a secret of birth or something hidden.

‘Is it because of him that the contents of the original I know are messed up?’

An alarm rang in my head.

Actually, the original work itself did not matter.

If it wasn’t for this penguin’s body, I would have stepped in and changed the flow of this work.

It was a device to give probability to the main character’s love, but to me, it was a terrible story that I did not want to imagine.

But what if I didn’t intervene at all and the original changed considerably?

Of course, I have to be concerned, right? There was a foul smell coming from somewhere.

I glared at him with my body tense. Then, interest appeared in Suradel’s eyes.

“Lord Reynos.”

At Suradel’s call, a man with long sky-blue hair tied up into a ponytail answered indifferently, fixing his monocle.

“Yes, Sir Suradel.”

He was on the handsome side, but perhaps because of his work, he looked quite tired, befitting his position as the master of the Magic Tower.

“…I’m actually a penguin lover, and I’ve never seen one that doesn’t fear me.”

Dad stared at Suradel with a look of absurdity.

“Is it because your favorite menu is penguins?”

Oh?

Come to think of it, I forgot that penguins were part of the killer whale food chain.

But I proudly raised my head, expressing, ‘So what?’

‘I’m not just a penguin, I’m a companion penguin. What are you going to do?’

‘Hmm? Try it.’

Suradel was still gazing at me with interest. Then he shook his head, seemingly sad.

“Unfortunately, I have never eaten a penguin.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, not yet.”

…Not yet?

‘This savage bastard. Why are you smacking your lips?’

Suradel’s smile towards me deepened. He must have been enjoying my reaction.

Dad sighed a little as if he had noticed it, and continued.

“To begin with, aren’t other creatures that are not afraid of Sir Suradel also rare? It’s not just penguins.”

“It’s very sad. Why is everyone afraid of me? I thought I laughed a lot in my own way.”

“Have you ever thought it’s scarier because you laughed?”

Suradel lightly ignored those words.

“Can I touch it?”

His golden eyes stared straight at me, but it was obvious who he was asking.

Dad shrugged his shoulders as he held out the order sheet Suradel had brought.

“Ask my daughter directly, not me.”

“…Hmm.”

The silver-haired man proceeded to ask me with a look of anticipation.

“Can I hug you?”

I inflated my chest to the fullest to mean ‘scram’, and threatened by waving my wings back and forth.

With a grim expression that would make anyone startled.

Padak, padak.

“Pfft!”

At my resolute refusal, my father suppressed a laugh with a somewhat satisfied face.

“Ah, sorry. I am at an age that would smile just looking at the falling leaves.”

“Lord Reynos.”

“I’m sorry, but my daughter is not an easy woman to give her arms to strangers.”

After looking at my father with disconsolate eyes for a while, Suradel fixed his eyes on me again.

“I think it will feel very good to hold it. Fluffy.”

“Kaak!”

“Then let’s agree to just touching the beak once. How about this?”

I shook my head in disagreement.

But Suradel, who concluded the ‘deal’ alone, bowed down and began to extend his hand towards me.

As his hand got closer even though I said no, I opened my beak in a hurry and snapped his hand.

In an instant, a fishy taste spreaded in my mouth.

I gasped in surprise.

I hurriedly stopped, but I had overlooked the attack power of my beak.

With my beak wide open, I fell backwards, away from Suradel’s body, and fresh blood flowed from his finger that had been released.

I looked up at him blankly, my pupils trembling so much that it was like there was an earthquake.

I didn’t mean to bite so hard…

My father, who did not take his eyes off the documents, noticed the situation a few seconds late. He then raised his voice.

“Sir Suradel!”

“Haha, you are so merciless.”

My dad and I were bewildered and didn’t know what to do. But the one who was bitten was just calm.

“Sorry. I was just joking around. I didn’t know you would hate it so much.”

As Suradel moved his lips slightly and uttered magic starter, the wound disappeared as if washed away. It was magic.

“Look. It’s all right now, isn’t it?”

He smiled, showed me his clean hands, and continued speaking in a friendly tone.

“I like you. Especially those crazy eyes, I don’t know what you’re thinking.”

Everyone who saw me up close said they were scared to look into my eyes.

There seemed to be a problem with his taste.

“It’s quite exhilarating to be bitten by you, but I hope you will allow me to shake hands next time.”

…Very serious too.

He lowered his head abruptly and whispered to me in a voice so soft that Dad couldn’t hear him.

—So, how did the killer whale taste?

‘It’s not my taste, and I think your brain has really gone bad.’

Suradel must have really liked me for he went in and out of my house day after day.

To the point I was sick of it.

“I heard from Lord Reynos. Your name is Adelia?”

“Adelia, I’m here.”

“Adelia, your eyes are even more passionate today. It’s a bit embarrassing to be looked at in this way.’

“Adelia, I think we’ve gotten a little closer, can I call you Lia now?”

“Wow, Lia. I think you almost made a hole in my hand.”

“Lia, will you allow me a hug today?”

“Adelia—”

“Lia—”

“Li—”

‘—.’

“My name is Bella. Baby, can you tell me your name?”

Dun.

I was engrossed in reminiscences of the past that I only came to my senses when I was called ‘baby’.

I blinked quickly a few times and felt my mind becoming clearer.

‘Maybe it’s because killer whales are said to be able to grow close to 10 meters?’

In human form, Bella was very tall. As good as having a bird’s eye view on most things.

“…Baby?”

As my silence grew longer, she called me again with a worried look on her face.

—My name is Adelia.

The words I couldn’t spit out remained like grains of sand around my lips.

“I…”
