Chapter 22: Jealousy

After Irene finished bathing the kitten, she gave herself a bath, and went to bed satisfied.

Ronald went to work and didn’t come back until midnight. He didn’t disturb Irene, but instead carefully lifted the quilt and lay down beside her.

Irene sensed the movement around her. Although she was sleeping, she hugged Ronald accurately and rubbed against him like she longed for him.

Just like a cat.

Ronald thought that he had woken Irene up. His movements froze for a while. He only dared to relax when he heard her steady breathing.

Ronald planted a kiss on Irene’s head. He had regained what he had lost. So this was what it felt like to be at ease.

The next morning, Irene was the first one to open her eyes. When she found herself lying on Ronald’s body, her small face immediately flushed red.

She could only stand up carefully, afraid that she would wake him up.

Habit was really a scary thing. No matter how much she defended herself during the day and how much she pretended to have lost her memory, she could not change her unconscious habit.

She quietly finished washing up and was ready to look for the kitten, but she found out that the kitten had disappeared without a trace.

“Meow—”

How could it be gone? Its hind leg was still injured, so it should not have run far.

Irene called for the kitten all the way until she found the place where the kitten was found in the backyard yesterday.

However, she saw a strange man here. His back was facing her, and he had neat short black hair. He did not look like a Westerner. “You are?”

The man turned around when he heard the voice and saw Irene in a beige long dress. Her long golden hair reached her waist, and her blue eyes were clear and bright. He hurriedly lowered his head to greet her like a gentleman. “I am Mrs. Smith’s foster son, Wen Shaoqing. And you are?”

When Irene saw the man turn around, she was even more certain that he was an Easterner.

Wen Shaoqing was dressed in a Chinese-style long robe. His temperament was gentle and reserved. He had a smile on his face, and his posture was tall and slender.

Irene had never seen an Easterner before, and his fluent English was something she had not expected. Although she was surprised, she still remembered the etiquette as the master, so she lifted the hem of her dress and greeted, “I’m Ronald’s wife, Irene.”

Wen Shaoqing seemed to know this name. “You’re my elder brother’s wife?”

Irene was stunned for a moment. “Elder brother?”

But before she could ask further, she heard a cat meow.

Irene’s eyes lit up and looked behind Wen Shaoqing. As expected, she saw the kitten from yesterday licking its fur. She quickly walked forward and gently picked it up. “Little guy, why are you here? I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”

Wen Shaoqing squatted beside Irene and said with a smile, “This cat is yours? I saw it running around the manor, so I made a nest for it.”

Irene stuck out her tongue and said in annoyance, “I forgot to make a nest for it.”

Irene’s reaction was rather innocent and cute. Wen Shaoqing noticed it, and his gaze moved slightly.

Wen Shaoqing could not help but move closer to her. His gaze was gentle and his eyes were smiling. “You’ve never had cats before, right? It’s normal that you don’t know.”

Irene was just about to turn her head to answer when she realized that Wen Shaoqing was too close to her. The tip of his nose almost touched hers and she was shocked.

Before she could react, a voice filled with jealousy sounded from behind her,

“Irene?”

The two of them turned their heads at the same time.

Ronald saw the two of them squatting together, their faces almost touching each other. He felt that it hurt his eyes. He only glanced at Wen Shaoqing indifferently and was not surprised at his appearance.

“You’re back?”

“Yes.”

Ronald strode toward Irene and stuffed the cat from Irene’s arms into Wen Shaoqing’s arms. He then carried Irene and walked back to the manor.

Irene cried out in surprise and quickly grabbed Ronald’s clothes. “What are you doing? Put me down!”

Ronald did not listen to Irene’s clamor. He even patted Irene’s buttocks. “Behave yourself.”

Ronald carried Irene all the way back to the room. He placed Irene on the bed and pressed her down. “Did you have a good chat with my younger brother?”

Irene frowned as she looked at him. Which eye of his saw her having a good chat with Wen Shaoqing? She was clearly teasing the cat, all right?

Irene pushed Ronald to get him to move away, but Ronald grabbed her wrists. “Don’t move.” Then he moved closer to Irene’s ear. The hot breath sprayed onto Irene’s ear. Irene could not help but shudder, “Actually, you don’t have amnesia at all, right?”

“…” Irene didn’t expect Ronald to ask this question. She was stunned and subconsciously stepped back nervously.

Ronald raised his head and looked straight into Irene’s eyes. “Are you kidding me? Am I easy to fool?”

Irene knew that she couldn’t escape from this matter, so she avoided Ronald’s hot gaze. “How did you know?”

Ronald laughed lightly and planted numerous kisses onto Irene’s collarbone and chest. As he kissed, he panted out, “Last night someone kept rubbing against my chest and calling out my name.” Ronald lifted Irene’s chin, “I’m allergic to cat fur, not to a clingy cat like you.”
