The Emperor’s Angel of Death

#1800 - The Longest Day (Part 2)

"Cry?"

Looking at Haschek's nervous face, Hayes scratched his head and said:

"Didn't you say that fighting is just like that? Why"

"Saying and doing are two different things, what do you know, you little brat!"

Before the words finished, the whistle sounded, and then the team began to move, arriving at the flight deck. The huge transport plane parked there had already lowered its ramp. Through the observation windows in the distance, you could already see transport planes flying towards the planet.

With kicks and shoves from the officers, the soldiers entered the even more crowded transport plane. Each transport plane was crammed with 1,000 people, divided into upper and lower layers, and everyone could only stand.

As the ramp closed, the cabin was plunged into boundless darkness, and Hayes could even hear the nervous breathing of the people around him.

A sudden jolt under his feet told everyone that they had left the transport ship.

He didn't know how long it had been, but the ground began to shake again, but this time it was more violent and sustained. Hayes vaguely heard Haschek mentioning something about "atmosphere" or something.

At this time, the lights came on, and a middle-aged political commissar with a microphone appeared near the cockpit of the cabin, next to him was Officer Ayi, whom Hayes knew.

"Listen to a letter from a great mother! This letter is written to her son on the front lines!"

Suddenly, the transport plane shook violently, and it seemed that he could still hear the sharp screeching of metal rubbing. The soldiers all let out fearful low cries, but the political commissar was still giving an impassioned speech. →

"Perkins, my child, I know this is all for the Human Empire and the Great Throne! I know you are contributing your life to the most sacred cause!"

Pa——

In a sound as if something was torn apart, the entire transport plane plummeted downwards. Immediately, everyone instinctively squatted down, trying to lower their center of gravity.

The political commissar also glanced left and right, then looked back as if asking something. When he turned his head, he continued his speech.

"Everyone here knows that you will never retreat! Everyone here is proud of you!"

Suddenly, Hayes heard a unique whistling sound, followed by a row of sudden bullets, whether they were enemy anti-aircraft weapons or fighter jets, pierced through the belly of the transport plane from below, until they hit the top armor of the transport plane and splashed sparks.

In that instant, Hayes heard screams, and saw blood mist and human fragments bursting out less than twenty meters away from him. Then he felt something warm on his cheek, reached out and touched it, and took a closer look, it turned out to be scarlet liquid.

"Your father sacrificed himself! Your brothers sacrificed themselves! Avenge them and demand blood debts from the abominable heretics!"

The transport plane shook more and more, and occasionally bullets pierced through the belly of the plane, always taking away some people because of the dense crowd. →

Some soldiers broke down, squatting on the ground screaming, or crying with their heads in their hands. Seeing this, the political commissar immediately roared:

"Shut up! Shut up! Any cowardly behavior is prohibited!"

Saying that, Hayes watched him suddenly pull out his pistol and pull the trigger on the nearest guy who was trembling and crying non-stop. As the soldier's head was pierced by the bullet, almost all the sound disappeared.

The political commissars, holding guns, began to patrol around the crowd. Hayes trembled all over, but held his breath and dared not breathe, nor dared to look at the corpses on the ground - today was the day he had seen the most corpses in his life.

Finally, the transport plane landed. When the hatch opened, when he saw the long-lost sunlight, Hayes almost suffocated.

The hive city, as huge as a mountain, was boiling like a volcano, and fierce explosions were constantly sweeping its lower part. At the same time, it was also spraying laser beams and fire rain around it. Although many of the dense giant anti-aircraft guns on the hive city's spires had been destroyed, a considerable number of them were still continuously sweeping the sky under the protection of the void shield. The huge roar of various explosions almost covered all sounds, and the air was filled with a strong smell of blood and burnt smell, as well as the smell of various engine oils.

Not only him, but all the recruits in the cabin were shocked. For a while, no one dared to move.

Seeing this, the officers and political commissars quickly pulled their clothes and dragged them out of the cabin.

"Quick! Get out!"

Hayes staggered and was pushed out by the crowd. The officers pulled the soldiers' clothes and kept them accelerating, while the political commissars held up the regimental flag and stood high, shaking and shouting.

"Commander Arash has ordered that no one is allowed to retreat a single step!"

"Delad IV will be liberated!"

"Follow your company closely! Any coward will be executed immediately!"

Suddenly, a loud noise almost knocked Hayes to the ground. He covered his ears and turned his head to look, and saw hundreds of meters away, a dozen huge self-propelled artillery pieces with their gun barrels pointing obliquely at the sky were constantly spewing flames. He vaguely remembered that the Imperial Infantry Armor Identification Manual introduced this thing, it seemed to be called the Basilisk.

"Go! Go! Don't dawdle!"

Hayes followed the team forward in a daze. The short stature he seemed to be submerged in the crowd.

He didn't know how long he had been walking, when he suddenly felt his foot slip and almost fell. He looked down and saw that the ground had become dark red at some point. Fresh blood mixed with mud and ash made the surroundings seem like a blood-colored swamp. At the same time, in the midst of various noisy sounds, he heard screams, groans and cries. Looking out through the gaps in the crowd, he saw many stretchers placed on both sides of the road, on which lay many struggling soldiers. Most of them had missing limbs, their wounds were bloody and the white bones could be seen. There were even more tragic ones. One of them was missing both legs and his left arm, and his stomach was cut open by something. His comrades were trying to stuff his intestines back into his abdominal cavity.

Several medical sisters wearing black armor and white veils were constantly busy among the stretchers, but there were too few of them to cope with so many wounded soldiers. Many wounded soldiers could only be injected with some anesthetics to temporarily relieve their pain, and some wounded soldiers were handed over to medical servitors for simple suturing and fixation. But even so, their young cheeks were already covered with sweat, and everyone looked very tired. Priests carrying incense burners also walked among the wounded soldiers. On the one hand, they blessed these wounded soldiers and provided spiritual assistance, and on the other hand, they would give the last prayers to those who were about to die.

Stretchers covered with white cloths were being carried away every moment, but more stretchers would arrive immediately.

Just after passing through this medical area, Hayes' nerves had not yet recovered, he saw a group of people coming towards him at the end of the road.

Each of them was basically injured, ragged and covered in dust. Not only was the formation scattered, but even the officers were listless, and the guns and helmets were casually carried on their shoulders or in their hands, like a group of walking dead.

Suddenly, inadvertently, Hayes met one of them's eyes. He saw the pity and despair in the other's eyes. The person was not very old, looking like he was only eighteen or nineteen years old, with a bandage wrapped around his head. It seemed that one ear was gone.

When Hayes withdrew his gaze, they were already very close to the burning hive city in front of them. The roar of the explosion continued, and he could only stagger towards the purgatory he had never experienced in his life——
