The Emperor’s Angel of Death
#2301 - Deep inside Mars
Hearing Sorkhyan's question, Li stroked his chin and thought for more than ten seconds, then said:
“How should I put it? It's impossible to say there wasn't anything to it. Based on my personal guess, there was probably an Eldar among that adventure team from the City of Wonders, one of the nameless two. Otherwise, Father wouldn't have found what he needed so easily in that demon-infested and completely unfamiliar webway city.
“What was the Emperor looking for?”
“I don't know, but the result was definitely that he found it. That much can be confirmed. It was probably also related to the Eldar.”
“Li, what kind of relationship do you think humans and Eldar should have?”
Li thought for a while, then shook his head.
“Politics and diplomacy aren't my strengths. I really can't say about such a complex issue. However, I do know something about Father's attitude. At that time, the Eldar were not humanity's greatest threat. Father was very clear about this, but he still listed the Eldar among the races that had to be eliminated. Father and Mother had a disagreement about this—or rather, a discussion. Mother thought that destroying the scourge of Commorragh would be enough, and that the wanderers should be left alone. However, Father was very firm. Mother privately complained that Father seemed to have some kind of paranoia, as if he always felt that the Eldar, who were already like a candle in the wind, might pose a threat to humanity in the future. But Father was never willing to explain the reason. He only said one strange thing to Mother: 'If the Phoenix is reborn in fire, it will surely burn down Paradise.'
Hearing this, Sorkhyan had a faint guess in his heart that the Emperor probably knew something about Asuryan.
And the Voidfarer hadn't mentioned this when he spoke with him. Had he forgotten?
Probably not.
“Li, have you been serving Him all these years? Haven't you thought about doing something for yourself?”
Li then sighed softly.
“What can I do? I don't have the power to dominate the universe, nor the wisdom to understand the past and present. Even surviving is already very difficult. If I die, the best outcome would be to become a wandering soul by Mother's side. Sorkhyan, you need to know that I don't even have the qualifications to be a tool. I was born only as an experimental product, an experimental product that only needs to have its results checked. From the moment I was born, I lost all value. It's already very good that I can do these things. After all, the value of living is only to live. It's better to do something, so that at least sometimes Mother can be happy.”
Hearing this, Sorkhyan was also quite moved.
At this moment, accompanied by a slight jolt of the shuttle, Li said:
“We're here. Let's go down. →”
When the hatch slowly opened, the two walked out. Sorkhyan was wearing his modified power armor this time, and Li was still in his black robe.
After leaving the shuttle, Sorkhyan found that it was not as dark as he thought, but rather there was a faint light. The rocks themselves were glowing, as if some form of electricity was flowing through them. The shuttle stopped on a flat, huge rock, with a dizzying abyss to the right.
“Just follow me.”
Li turned and walked towards the downward steps on the left, and Sorkhyan followed behind him.
The air here was very cold, and Sorkhyan, who was not wearing a helmet, could clearly see his breath. They entered a cave with a leaf-shaped arched cross-section, and it was quite narrow. Sorkhyan could only just fit in. The two gradually went deep into the mysterious underground of Mars along the slope.
During the walk, Sorkhyan reached out of curiosity and touched the rock wall beside him, but found that it was warm, and although it looked smooth, he could feel tiny undulations on its surface, as if it had been hammered with a miniature iron shovel.
Obviously, this place was not formed naturally, but was artificially excavated, and relatively primitive tools were used.
The two were silent all the way, only their footsteps echoed in the passage. They walked for a long time, and Sorkhyan even forgot the time. Li turned many times in the middle, and Sorkhyan didn't know how the other party judged where to go, but it was obvious that the other party was very familiar with this place, so familiar that he didn't need any instructions.
When they passed through the serpentine passage and the colorful corridor formed by translucent stalagmites, and entered a crystal-like shimmering bridge, Sorkhyan realized that they had come out.
He was also shocked that there was such an underground landscape under Mars.
“How did these things appear?”
“Some forces changed the shape of the rocks, or some things buried deep seeped out.”
After stepping over the smooth, mirror-like bridge, the light slowly began to dim behind them, and the two entered a dark, lightless area, but Li didn't need light, and neither did Sorkhyan. Their vision was enough to allow them to see the road ahead clearly.
But after walking for a while, Sorkhyan stopped.
“Did you hear that?”
Li stopped, then whispered:
“Anything can happen here, don't need to care too much. When it really wants to chat, it will chat with you properly.”
However, this darkness did not last long, and light appeared in front, and then the two walked into a large laboratory hall.
This was a very large space, roughly square in shape. One wall was covered with thousands of colorful parchment scrolls, like a child's collage. On the other side of the hall was a dark passage, with exposed red iron beams supporting the ceiling. There were many slightly swaying cables hanging from the ceiling, some silent, and some sizzling with sparks.
Under one wall was a surgical table, surrounded by rows of breathing masks, intravenous infusion sets, and iron tables with neatly arranged tools. Next to it was a complex device that looked like a giant rock drill. Its structure was made of faded brass and dull alloy, and rust marks covered its sides. Some glass power-generating balls were installed on top of the golden ring-shaped cable. There was a silver wheel-shaped structure on the cone seat in front of the device, with a small ray disc at the top of each of the four wheel spokes.
Each ray disc was aimed at an upright flat panel on the opposite wall, and the projection pattern printed on the panel was a human body.
However, these things were covered with thick dust and had obviously not been used for many years.
There were two people standing in the hall, one of whom was a bit like a member of the Adeptus Ministorum, but very tall and strong, with obvious genetic modification marks, and various weapons implanted in his body. Thick cables and wires of various colors could be seen passing through the robes and wrapped around his limbs. His right hand held a long iron staff with gears rotating on top, and the other looked like a Tech-Priest, draped in an old robe.
