The Emperor’s Angel of Death

#2630 - Wang Ting Military Reform (Part 2)

Another infantry unit belonging to the Flying Legion was the Skywing. They were essentially the scourge of Commorragh. These Eldar, after undergoing intense physical modifications, embraced the mercy of the Eternal Queen, abandoning their former cruel ways of life and instead living a simple life in the towering giant trees, tending to the flocks of birds they raised and their aerial gardens. Yet, even so, they still couldn't work with the Swooping Hawks, who also followed the Path of the Sky. In fact, due to their irreversible physical changes, they were still ostracized by most Path warriors. Therefore, Soshian arranged for them to be in the Flying Legion.

However, the Flying Legion did not include all of the Royal Court's aircraft units, which brings up a topic that is constantly discussed among both the Eldar and humans.

Who should the winged ones belong to?

The Imperium knows that the winged ones are all taken by the Navy. If both sides can cooperate, that's fine, but if the other side is uncooperative, the Astra Militarum can only huddle with their Valkyries, controlling their Hydras, trembling under the aerial firepower of various enemies, doing their best and leaving the rest to fate.

But things in the Imperium often develop in the worst possible direction. Based on Soshian's many years of experience leading troops, the number of times the Imperial Navy and the Astra Militarum can "cooperate well" is about the same as the number of times it rains on Terra.

Since there are such examples, Soshian certainly couldn't jump in headfirst. Therefore, he assigned Nightwings, Razorwings, Phoenix Bombers, and Vampire Raiders to the Flying Legion, while assigning Darkstar Fighters, Eagle Bombers, Vampire Hunter Bombers, and Voidraven Bombers to the Navy.

From this division, it is clear that Soshian believes that the forces operating on planets need to ensure air superiority, while the Navy needs high-powered bombers that can threaten ships. Moreover, the Eldar aircraft are not actually divided so clearly. Unlike human aircraft, where interceptors are extreme airfield protectors, fighters are completely focused on aerial combat, and bombers are as clumsy as gliding Doomweavers, Eldar aircraft are all equally fast and agile. Take the Voidraven, for example. Although it is called a bomber, its maneuverability and speed still crush the vast majority of aircraft in the galaxy. Perhaps only the Necrons' Wraith fighters, which can also fly without inertia, can compete with it. So, strictly speaking, he assigned most of the light aircraft to the Flying Legion and the heavy aircraft to the Navy. Of course, he also gave the Vampire Raiders, bombers that also have transport functions, to the more needy Flying Legion.

In fact, in the all anti-gravity Eldar society, it's not just aircraft that can fly. Motorcycles, tanks, and even infantry can fly in the sky. Therefore, the main task of the Flying Legion is not to support ground forces, but to occupy the airspace and eliminate everything that flies. This is also why they need to be independent. They have some interaction with the infantry, but probably not much.

However, when forming battalion-level battle groups, a Flying Legion company can be inserted into them as a temporary reinforcement. Similarly, a Flying Legion wing can be inserted into a brigade.

As for the Dragon Legion, this was originally not planned. It was proposed by Veronica when Soshian was discussing the initial plan with her. The reason was simple: if the Dragon Knights of the Savage Kingdoms were brutally stuffed together with soldiers accustomed to the Ark doctrines, it would be like mixing Catachans and Mordians, resulting in only chaos and no effect. Moreover, the Dragon Knights of the Savage Kingdoms are organized in clans and families, which is very different from the chain of command that Soshian hopes for. If they are forced to change, I am afraid that it will be a forced decision.

After Veronica said this, Soshian thought it made sense, so he separately carved out a Dragon Legion.

The organization of the Dragon Legion was simple. Anyway, each kingdom had sent a thousand armed men to the Royal Court, so they were directly organized into two brigades, each numbered according to their respective kingdoms. Their internal command framework followed their own habits. Soshian only made some guiding adjustments.

5. Clarify military ranks and positions.

Soshian had planned the military positions a long time ago. The Dragon Legion basically didn't need to be managed. He just gave the commander of each brigade the position of "Dragon Knight General," and their subordinate positions were divided by themselves, only needing to be reported to the Privy Council. In a sense, they were a very independent armed force. The Flying Legion was relatively simple, dividing positions such as squadron leader and battalion commander according to combat years and battle achievements, and appointed by the Privy Council. Only the infantry was the most complicated.

First of all, the squad leader is selected by the members of the squad themselves before and during the battle. Strictly speaking, it is not a formal military position, but a temporary one.

The real "officers" start at the company level. First, the core companies of each battalion, their company commanders are appointed by the battalion commander of the battalion, and the two deputy company commanders are selected by the company commander himself; the company commanders of the non-core companies are appointed by the Privy Council, and one of the company commanders is also assigned by the Privy Council, and the other is selected by the company commander himself.

At the battalion level, the chief and deputy officers are nominated by the Privy Council, and Soshian personally issues an edict for appointment. However, the names of the battalion-level commanders were determined by Veronica, who chose the military positions of the ancient empire, called Battalion General, and a Battalion General has three deputy officers, called Battalion Attendants. Soshian thought that there was no harm in the temple, the names were just different forms, and knowing that Veronica wanted to have a little "sense of participation," he accepted these two somewhat ancient names.

The name of the brigade-level commander is Brigade Commander, which shows the importance of its command and military power from the name. Therefore, even the Privy Council cannot participate in the appointment, and only Soshian can decide.

As for the military rank, it was a question that Soshian had been thinking about for a long time. First of all, the benefits of military rank, that is, military rank, are obvious. It can clarify the individual's position in the overall military system, which is conducive to the construction and efficient operation of the command system. These do not need to be repeated. As a large-scale organized military force, relying on a strict and hierarchical military rank system to build a chain of command is undoubtedly very practical, but this does not mean that all armed forces must do so, such as the Astartes Chapter.

The Astartes Chapter, as one of the most core armed forces of the Empire, does not have the strict military rank system of the Astra Militarum. Everyone relies on their own positions to operate in the chain of command. The sergeant is more of a veteran's title, which is different from the Astra Militarum's non-commissioned officer (actually it is an English problem). Although the Astartes also have honorary titles, they are completely tied to the position, such as the Master of the Armory, who must be the Forge Master. It would not be said that a company commander wears the title of Master of the Armory, but the Astra Militarum's colonel is not necessarily the regiment commander, but may also be a logistics chief, or someone in the administrative staff.
