The Emperor’s Angel of Death

#2718 - The Endless and the Insubstantial (Part 2)

Seeing Occam about to take Lana away, Trazyn hesitated for a moment. Despite a thousand reservations, he reluctantly turned around, preparing to return to the wormhole. However, before leaving, he suddenly said to Occam:

"Tell him, do not continue to provoke Szarekh. He is not yet at a point where he can challenge him."

Upon hearing this, Occam replied:

"Trazyn, what is your position then? You've been observing the Star Phantoms for quite some time now. You must be more aware of Solarian's attitude than any Necron. In the future, there will inevitably be a great war between him and the Necron race, even one that concerns the survival of your race. Will you still remain indifferent to this?"

With his back to Occam, Trazyn slightly raised his head, emitting a hollow laugh.

"What does that have to do with me? Occam, you speak as if you really understand me."

"It is precisely because I don't understand that I ask. If I knew you inside and out, would there be any need to ask these things?"

"I am merely an archaeologist, a collector, a scholar. I have no interest in power or conspiracy. I only focus on the present."

"Then can I ask you two questions?"

"My consultation fees are very high, you know."

"Consider it a return gift for that cigarette. They are not very confidential questions. First, is Szarekh currently in the galaxy?"

Trazyn fell silent, seemingly contemplating, or perhaps using silence to express refusal. However, Occam remained patient, waiting.

After a long while, the Infinite one slowly said:

"He should be absent, temporarily."

"Thank you. Then the second question, Tech-priest of the Pious Serpents Chapter has been implanted with a mindshackle scarab. You should be very familiar with this device, but to control a Space Marine implanted with Grey Matter, an ordinary mindshackle scarab would probably be insufficient. Do you know of any Necron technicians or Overlords who possess such advanced technology?"

After listening, Trazyn stroked the chin of his death mask, saying meaningfully:

"This matter is interesting, very interesting. I cannot give you a definitive answer, but I can offer a purely personal guess. If I am wrong, do not think I am misleading you."

"Please speak."

"Szarekh's personal technician, also the one said to have truly created biotransference technology, Orikan the Diviner. If I had a handgun and had to choose between him and Orikan, I would empty all the bullets into him and smash the gun into his face as well, because he is undoubtedly a damned, uninteresting bastard."

"Orikan the Diviner..."

After repeating the name twice, Occam thoughtfully nodded.

"Thank you for your answer, friend."

"You're welcome. I'm leaving then."

"Trazyn, if given the opportunity to restore your flesh, what would you choose?"

By this time, the Infinite one had already stepped one leg into the wormhole. Hearing this, he paused for a moment, finally shaking his head.

"Others should receive such an opportunity, and I am fine as I am now."

"No regrets?"

"What is regret? We are shaped by our past selves, and our past selves are like ghosts, even if we encounter them, we would not recognize them. I offer these words to you as well, Unbound, I hope that one day you can also be honest with yourself."

After speaking, the legendary Necron disappeared into the wormhole, and the small scarab also cracked and turned into a pile of scattered scrap metal.

Occam stared in the direction Trazyn disappeared, not knowing what he was thinking. After a few minutes, he turned to Lana, who was trying to escape, and said:

"Lady Lana, let's go. Unless you really choose to take a stroll on the Harlequin's stage, as I said, you have no choice."

Lana gripped the staff in her hand, having listened to the entire conversation between the two, even analyzing it word by word. She remained silent because her sub-logic had already reached its limit, yet even so, she was still confused.

However, she had deduced a few things.

The Technocracy sent her here seemingly with another purpose. The person mentioned by the other two, called 'Solarian,' seemed to be a key figure. Trazyn even seemed to faintly fear his power. At the same time, the Flayer Skull in her hand was not as simple as she had previously thought, and the appearance of these humans was also not simple.

She seemed to have fallen into a complex web, the whole matter completely out of her control.

"Where are you taking me?"

"To see Solarian."

"He is the Phoenix Lord you mentioned?"

"Ah, but you may meet him under another identity. Let's go, we don't have much time."

"Why should I listen to you?"

Lana's knuckles cracked as she gripped the staff tightly. She was not without trump cards. Since her last dream, she had been studying that thing, vaguely gaining some understanding. This object seemed to be able to be used actively, but she dared not use it, fearing that once she used it, she would be doomed.

"Do not think that I am someone you can manipulate at will, you lowly creature!"

The insults did not anger Occam. He simply turned around, smiling, and said:

"The Higher Technician Academic Community, right?"

"What?"

"The information about your organization was sent to me by my old friend before he left. Clearly, you are in a delicate opposition to the Silent King. Coincidentally, you are about to meet someone who also seems to have some disagreements with him, so you actually have a lot in common, I think."

"We merely oppose the schemer who dragged the entire race into the abyss! But we still uphold the glory of the Necrons, and we would never betray our race to associate with xenos! Don't even think about it!"

"What if I told you that Szarekh himself has some ambiguous relationship with humans?"

"What? Explain yourself more clearly."

"Perhaps if you go back and ask your superiors, they will give you a more definitive answer, but Szarekh is not an easy character to deal with. Do you think you can solve him with this thing? Far from it. An avenger should be good at using any power. If you want to achieve your wish, we will use you, but you can also use us. Forgive me for being a bit too direct, but this is how the galaxy is. Those who stick to the rules often achieve nothing. Your revenge plan must have been in execution for a long time, right? Have you made much progress?"

Lana stared at the human in blue armor. Although she knew that his words were a kind of "skillful persuasion," she was indeed wavering in the face of the serpent's tempting hiss.

Since being awakened by her cousin six thousand years ago, she had been running around for revenge for six thousand years, but it had always seemed like a waste of time.

Seeing Lana standing still, Occam stopped talking and turned to leave.

After a moment of insistence, Lana finally reluctantly followed his footsteps, step by step.
