The Emperor’s Angel of Death
#3315 - Storm of Amalur (VII)
“So that’s your plan.”
Nodding thoughtfully, Kasati finally understood Talos's idea. He paced back and forth for a moment, then said in a low voice:
“That will mean many deaths.”
Talos looked at him helplessly.
“You've been through the Istvan slaughterhouse, why are you becoming so sentimental now?”
“I'm just a little emotional, but the Imperium has been like this for ten thousand years.”

Just then, the command vehicle suddenly shook. The two immediately became alert and pulled up the observation window's cover. They saw a pile of burning wreckage on the snow-covered ground to the left front of the Rhino, looking like a Valkyrie. At the same time, other fragments continued to fall from the sky.
“Commander, we are under attack from enemy air forces. The escort formation may not be able to hold out. Should we try to conceal ourselves?”
Hearing the voice from the speaker, Talos replied without thinking:
“Being targeted, hiding is useless. Accelerate and rush to the polar fortress. It shouldn't be far.”
But Talos didn't know that three Doom Scythes had already locked onto the Rhino command vehicle. Just as they were preparing to destroy it with a precise dive, a thunderous roar suddenly came from the sky. A Lightning Squadron roared in, and 12 fighters recklessly charged at the enemy, forcing them to change direction to engage.
When the Rhino finally crossed the last distance and entered the polar fortress, Talos stepped out of the command vehicle and saw the wreckage of the last Lightning fighter falling from the sky. Their sacrifice not only ensured Talos's safety but also damaged one Doom Scythe. The remaining two Doom Scythes, facing the surging anti-aircraft fire and layers of void shields, had no choice but to leave reluctantly.
The polar fortress, as the name suggests, is a military fortress near the planet's North Pole. It is built on a cliff facing the sea, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack. The endless frozen sea is its best defense. At the same time, relying on the thick ice and rock covering it, it can also withstand orbital bombardment. This fortress is one of the most important military fortresses in the Amara system and has been doubled in size in recent months, adding eight sets of large void shield generators and more than forty thousand sets of large and small defensive weapons. It is garrisoned by more than two million troops, all of whom are the most elite battle group auxiliaries. In addition, it has a large communication array covering the entire planet, serving as the true core of the Amara defense.
The polar fortress, including the highest communication spire, is five hundred meters high. The overall shape is stepped, and the outline is a semicircle, with one side embedded in the mountain and the other side protected by three defensive walls, from the outside to the inside, from high to low. The outermost wall is fifty meters high, with a total length of more than 10 kilometers, made of alloy and solid concrete, and equipped with a large number of automatic turrets and monitors. The area between the outer wall and the middle wall is the turret area, with a large number of defensive turrets ranging from 50 to 100 meters in height, ranging from cannons to automatic cannons to anti-aircraft guns, and complex tracks that can transport troops to any area of the outer wall. The middle wall reaches a height of seventy meters, but due to the height difference of the mountain, it is actually a hundred meters higher than the first wall. It guards the main troop storage area and heavy turrets, and there are also passages leading to the inside of the mountain. The inner wall is completely made of alloy, and it defends the core area of the fortress, including the command center, large void shield generators, communication equipment, and other facilities.
Such a powerful fortress should make any defender feel at ease, but in fact, everyone is uneasy because the enemy's offensive is too swift and fierce, exceeding their understanding of war.
Talos raised his head and stared at the sky. The sky above the North Pole was very clear, without any ominous dark clouds, only occasional green flashes of lightning.
The absence of orbital bombardment here means they won their first victory—deceiving the invaders.
Now their fleets should all be leaving orbit to deal with the human fleets in the void, but with their mysterious teleportation technology, since they can invite the governor to visit without a sound, it means that even if the ships are not in orbit, it does not affect their ability to deploy troops.
This is a good thing, for the overall plan.
However, this situation changed with the arrival of Talos.
The Necron commander obviously noticed him. The Doom Scythes that had been following him quickly sent the message to the Crowned General, so Talos received the message before he had even warmed his seat in the command post.
“Commander! Abnormal energy signals detected in the frozen sea two hundred and fifty kilometers away!”
Talos put down the data slate, frowned, and looked at the battlefield holographic map, noticing a red halo spreading continuously on the ice sea to the east of the fortress.
“Here they come? Send my order, all long-range artillery, immediately carry out covering fire on that area!”
Twenty seconds after the order was transmitted, the twenty-eight giant battle cannons installed above the fortress began firing. Each of these fortress guns had the power of a small warship's cannon. Their firing created a terrifying small earthquake, tearing and disintegrating the thick ice surface.
“New energy signals detected! At the one hundred and fifty kilometer mark!”
“So fast?”
Talos looked at the holographic map in confusion, suddenly understanding something.
“Fake signals! Good fellows, these bastards are playing tricks too. Their real attack direction is not here! Strengthen the scans, especially to the south!”
Soon, the scan results proved his guess.
“Report! A large number of enemies have appeared at the 7 o'clock direction of the fortress!”
Talos came to the screen of the large optical scanner, looking at the images transmitted inside. A huge legion was approaching along the only land passage to the fortress. They had a massive and orderly infantry formation, as well as various vehicles, including Ghost Arks, Tomb Blades, and various constructs, such as huge Tomb Spiders, and several towering black stone pyramids.
But none of this surprised Talos. What really surprised him was the multi-legged behemoth looming in the wind and snow.
“New toys.”
They had upright disc-shaped bodies, with a pair of huge curved claws as forelimbs, and four smaller hind limbs, looking like some kind of deformed reptile, but the terrifyingly sized alien cannons on both sides of its body highlighted their true identity.
A type of Necron siege weapon that humans had never encountered before, and there were three of them.
Kasati also leaned his head over, and after seeing this thing, said in surprise:
“Are these their Titans?”
“Titans shouldn't be this small. Judging from the size comparison, they should be the size of large Knights.”
At this time, the fortress's artillery roared again, this time adjusting its direction. The huge shells unleashed a storm of destruction, and the Necron infantry formation was completely erased, turning into flying metal fragments.
