Chapter 43: The Second Sacred Seal

Just then, Niss realized that Hol’s figure was starting to become blurred as well. “What’s going on?” She turned to look at her companions in shock. 

On the other hand, Fern was astounded as he watched Kaya fading. He was still holding her hands, but a moment later, the girl before his eyes vanished completely. He stared at his palms and couldn’t believe that she was gone just like this. 

At the same time, Ril had disappeared as well. Stan looked around in astonishment and realized that it was the same case for his companions. 

It was then did the four of them realize that Diaz, the Doylans, the mercenaries as well as the weapons in their bodies were gone.

The river turned calm and started flowing slowly. The entire environment was so tranquil that it was as though nothing had happened before.

“Have all the illusions disappeared?” Niss turned to Rae.

“I think so. Then…” Rae pondered on it for a moment and raised her head. “Have we succeeded in our mission?”

“But we haven’t gotten the sacred seal yet.” Niss raised her magic cane. The gemstone on top of it was still blue.

“What is that?” Fern pointed in the direction where Mr. Hunter’s corpse lay previously. 

There was a hole on the ground with a metal box in it. The box appeared to be as big as a badge. Niss walked over to pick it up and returned to her companions.

“Even when Mr. Hunter was at his last breath, he still tried to bury this box.” Fern was awed by his deceased friend’s willpower. 

Niss held the box with both hands and looked helplessly at her companions.

“Whatever is inside this box, just open it.” Fern encouraged her.

Niss nodded and raised her right hand to open the box. The base in the box was yellow, and in the middle of it was a ring. Other than a yellow gemstone that was embedded on it, the ring itself was plain.

After taking the ring out carefully, for some reason, Niss was tempted to wear the ring. Upon sweeping a glance over her companions, she summoned her courage and put it on the ring finger of her left hand. The ring fit right onto her finger as though it was custom-made for her.

Right after she wore the ring, its color started fading. She suddenly thought of something and lifted her magic cane. As expected, the gemstone on the cane was slowly turning from blue to green. After the gemstone on the ring became transparent, the gemstone on her cane had turned completely green. 

“Is this the yellow sacred seal? Finally…” Niss said in a trembling voice. After going through so much hardship, she finally got what she wanted. 

Just then, a strange sound could be heard in front of them as a swirl appeared. As the sound got louder, the swirl also became wider. It was the same swirl when Fern and the others entered the Source of Magic.

“It’s all over now.” Fern let out a long breath and looked at the wounds on his body. “Although everything has disappeared, my wounds remain.”

Stan used his sword as a crutch because his left leg was severely injured. “Let’s go back to our world. The war there still hasn’t ended.”

Fern nodded in acknowledgement as he took Stan’s hand and placed it on his own shoulder. As the two of them staggered toward the swirl, Niss and Rae followed them quietly. 

When they were right in front of the swirl, Fern stopped in his tracks. “Niss, Rae, you should go over first. Hersey should be waiting for you.”

“No, Fern. You’ll go first.” Rae became calm again as she was no longer the girl who cried in Moses’s embrace.

Helplessly, Fern smiled. “Are you worried that I’m reluctant to leave this place? Look, there’s nothing here now.”

“Let’s go, Rae. I trust Fern.” Niss looked at the mercenary and smiled confidently.

“Don’t worry. I’m right here. Go now.” Stan’s face contorted due to immense pain. It was as though he would collapse at any moment.

Without uttering a word, Rae shot a look at the mercenary and stepped into the swirl with Niss. After they disappeared, Stan urged his companion to do the same. “Let’s go.”

Fern turned his head to take one last look at the place where Kaya was seated as he smiled in relief.

In this world created by the Source of Magic, the sun was sinking into the horizon as the entire sky was dyed crimson. The river also reflected the reddish sunlight. The wind from the North still blew at them, but the weather wasn’t so chilly anymore.

“This is such a magical place. Everything just seems so real. I don’t know what magic is, and I’ll probably never understand it.” Stan was awed by the magnificent view before his eyes. 

“I’m starting to suspect that what we’re seeing is real rather than illusionary. Maybe other than our own world, there’s also this parallel world.” Fern looked at the setting sun and remarked.

“I hope you’re wrong.” Stan frowned as the pain in his left leg made him come to his senses. “It’ll be unbearable for me if Ril really existed in this world before and was killed.”

Fern retracted his gaze and said, “How much hardship will we have to go through before finding our inner peace? We still can’t leave our past behind, can we?”

“I don’t know about the future, but at this moment in this world, we can look back at everything calmly, even though we still obstinately believe that what we’ve seen is all an illusion.” Stan turned around and looked at the swirl. 

“Maybe in our own world one day, we’ll also be able to look at everything else dispassionately after enduring a catastrophe.” Fern pulled Stan’s hand closer to better support his weight and trudged toward the swirl.

“That day will come, Fern. I promise you on the knight’s honor.” With his left hand draped around Fern’s neck, Stan used his sword as a crutch and lumbered forward. 

The setting sun had cast their shadows on the ground. The atmosphere around them was tranquil as they stepped into the swirl. 

Slowly, the swirl disappeared and the strange sound died down, which signaled the end of their journey in the Source of Magic.
