The Vampire's Chosen Mate
Chapter 44 - Chosen Mate (44)
Dimitri
It has been three months now since my father's funeral. And life was slowly starting to feel normal again. A week after the funeral my sister had began training for the role of Queen as my mother held the position for her so long. This kept mom on her toes and as a result she spent less time visiting my dad’s grave. I was glad because I was scared mom was going to lose her mind.
Ellie was currently constantly away on trips for months on end. She needed to learn various fighting techniques including Martial arts, Karate, Judo, and Jujutsu. This was my favourite part of all the royal training. I did have a knack for breaking things. She of course went with Damien always. And Damien finally started smiling again. It was so odd at first seeing Damien smile but with time it became bearable. I would never admit this to them, but the truth was that Ellie and Damien fit together rather well.
All in all, we were all doing okay.
I had left the palace and found myself a nice little place in Kena. It was nothing special even though I could have taken up the most lavish of houses. I had grown a love for the simple life. Now that I think of it, I am glad that things with my mate ended the way they did. Because I am certain that there was no way on earth, she would be keen to live in such a small apartment.
I now lived like the humans and I found it to be quite fulfilling. I spend my days drawing without a care. It was so freeing just putting my thoughts to paper. I thought about finding a job again but I was still figuring things out for myself and did not know where life was going to take me yet. Although I knew without a doubt that I definitely did not want to be a postman. But I must admit that I did miss the drama that we had as co-workers in the post office every morning.
It turns out that I am pretty good drawing, and thus I was now signed by an art studio. Thus, I had some of my artwork put up in their gallery for sale. However, most of my drawings, I kept for myself. See, I liked drawing without thought. I would just sit in front of a blank canvas and let my mind led the way. 80% of the time though, I always ended up with pictures of her. Basically in each of my drawings, there was always a trace of her. Be it her honey brown eyes or her hair that I loved so much. Whenever I let go, my mind always wondered back to her like she was my compass and sense of direction.
So, now here I was sitting in African World the third week in a row this month, hoping that today would be the day. Also I had grown to love this restaurant of Rebecca’s. It is like her routine had now become my routine too. I had eaten everything on the menu now and even memorized the menu. I came here so often that all the workers here knew me now. What could I say, I was a fan. But more importantly I was a man on a mission. A mission with very little chance of success but one I was determined to complete.
Rebecca had left me with no method of contacting her. So, this was my only resort. Well, this was my first resort. I had planned to do this for a full month and if she did not appear here then I was going to execute plan B. I was going to find the old witch from the creepy cemetery and seek her help in locating Rebecca. I was done pretending. I was done covering it up. I was finally ready and I wasn't going to stop until I found her. I deserved happiness and was going to fight for it.
"Am I to get you your usual sir?" a familiar female voice said. I looked up and saw Melanie. Melanie is the waitress who serves me each time I come here. I was actually surprised that she had come over to ask me for my order today when she knew what I wanted already. For the past week, I have always ordered the same thing from her- Jollof rice with fried chicken. But then noticed that she wasn’t even looking at me. Instead she was looking at the cashiers. I couldn’t understand why she was not looking back at me so I decided to follow her line of vison. And after following her line of vision, my eyes spotted the jackpot. I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. In all honestly after week two I had lost hope of plan A ever working.
Her hair was much bigger now as if covered most of her eyes. Yet it still went in all directions like I always loved. She was currently wearing a yellow poker dotted dress with a plain-black T-shirt underneath. She then finished speaking animatedly to the cashier and turned around.
Then I realised that she was actually looking all over the cafe as if she was searching for someone. As her gaze got closer to my direction, I felt my heart speed up its pace in my chest. And then her eyes landed on me and as if she just found what she was looking for, Rebecca stopped moving. Instead she stared right back at me.
Seeing her face after not seeing it for so long was refreshing. It felt like even the air become lighter as it entered my nostrils. My heart had now calmed down drastically in recognition. My mind was cleared of all racing thoughts and only one thought remained. Everything had fallen right in place.
No, the world didn't stop in that moment. The truth was that it had only began then.
That was how I knew. It was always going to be her.
