Chapter 181 - “Where does it hurt? Let me see.” (3)

Then, before Cheng Huan could stop him, he dialed Jiang MingYuan.

Jiang MingYuan was still in a meeting after hours and someone from the upper management were speaking. Half way through his talk, a phone rang abruptly.

Everybody looked at each other and there was admiration in their eyes for the owner of the cellphone. Everybody knew that that boss hadn’t been in the best of mood lately. How would this person not know to put his phone on vibrate before the meeting had started?

The group of upper management looked around for the source of the ringer while waited for the drama. They looked and looked and finally noticed that the ringer came from the very front.

As though in slow motion, everyone turned their heads slowly and stiffly toward the front of the conference table and they saw what could be called tenderness on their normally expressionless boss. The boss excused himself and stepped out of the conference room.

The door to the conference room closed behind him and everybody was dying from curiosity inside. Everybody exchanged looks but none of them dare to walk up and eavesdrop.

The call did not last very long and Jiang MingYuan returned after two minutes and announced good news.

“Meeting adjourned. We will finish this tomorrow. Thank you all.” He nodded at everyone before he turned and left. Perhaps it was just their imagination, but the boss seemed to be walking faster than normal.

Now that the boss was gone, naturally nobody was going to stay behind. They all let out a sigh of relief, packed up, and get ready to leave.

Qi Shan finished typing the very little assistant word, turned off his laptop and stood up. Before he could walk away, someone poked him on his elbow. The one who poked him had a particularly nosy look on him as he asked, “Aye. Is the boss dating? You know, don’t you. C’mon, do share.”

Qi Shan gave him an awkward but polite smile.

Of course he knew, but would he dare to share that information without the boss’s approval? Did he still want to keep his job?

“I don’t think he’s dating. Haven’t you heard that the boss has a son a while back? He is probably going to pick his son up from school.” Someone else chimed in before Qi Shan could come up with a polite excuse. He said it with such confident and eve wanted Qi Shan’s approval when he was done talking. “Am I right?”

“I’m not sure. The boss didn’t say.” Qi Shan, his laptop in hand, squeezed passed the others. “I’ve got some more work to do. Talk later.”

Ever since he got the call from XingXing, Jiang MingYuan was anxious all over. He could barely tolerate the very short drive over to Cheng Huan’s place. He must have checked his watch at least ten times on his way when he finally arrived at Cheng Huan’s building.

He took a deep breath before he walked out of the elevator when the elevator doors opened and rang the doorbell.

Faint footsteps from the inside could be heard and, tried as he might, Jiang MingYuan was not able to slow down his heartbeats. When the door opened, Jiang MingYuan maintained the same look but he finally couldn’t help but break into a smile, “I heard you’ve decided to move.”

He asked before he even stepped inside the door. He must really want to find out. Thinking about that, Cheng Huan was happy all of a sudden. With a slight “Mmm”, she pulled his slippers out of the shoe cabinet and said, “How come you come over at this hour? Have you had dinner yet?”

“Not yet.” Jiang MingYuan bent over to change out of his shoes but he felt so energetic all over that he didn’t even need dinner. Arranging his shoes properly, he followed behind her and asked, “The new place is ready. Do you have time tomorrow? I can send someone over to help you pack.”

“There’s no need. Most of these belong to the landlord. I just need to pack some clothes and toys. I won’t need any help.”

“There are a lot of toys. You won’t be able to do it all on your own.” Jiang MingYuan disagreed. He picked up his son who threw himself at him and followed Cheng Huan into the kitchen. “Or you can move in a few days and I can come and help you out when I have some free time.”

Cheng Huan was cutting the fish into equal size slices. She was preparing this for the pickled cabbage and fish soup. She noticed that Jiang MingYuan was more talkative today than usual and the curvature on her lips stayed.

“That works.” She accepted Jiang MingYuan’s second suggestion. Then she bossed him around. “Go and rinse out the pickled cabbage for me.”

Jiang MingYuan had no problem with that. He put XingXing down, picked up the pickled cabbage and started rinsing them carefully under the tap.

When he was done, Cheng Huan had finished slicing the fish. Placing the fish onto a plate and rinsing off the cutting board, Cheng Huan grabbed a different knife and was about to start chopping the pickled cabbage.

“Let me.” Jiang MingYuan wasn’t a great cook but he could at least chop vegetables. Cheng Huan didn’t fight him over it. She handed the knife over to him and stepped aside. She went over to marinate the fish bone, head, and tail. When she was done with that, she pushed them aside, pulled out a garlic and handed a few cloves to XingXing, “Here, help Mommy peel this.”

XingXing took the cloves of garlic from her and one even fell through his fingers onto the floor. He squatted down, picked it back up, and mimicked how his mother was peeling them.

The little kiddo had never done this before and with all the dings and dents on the garlic, they were still not cleanly peeled. His fingernails were short and after peeling just a few cloves, his hands started to burn.

“Mom, my hands hurt.” Holding the garlic cloves in his other hand, he stared at the tip of his thumb and his little face furrowed.

“What’s the matter?”

“Where did it hurt? Let me see.”

Two voices rang at the same time and both Jiang MingYuan and Cheng Huan turned around and bend down to look at XingXing and, half way through that, their heads bumped into each other’s.

It was not a hard impact and didn’t hurt when their cheeks touched each other’s. It wasn’t a big deal normally speaking. Except that after bumping into each other, one of them turned their head and the other didn’t, causing Cheng Huan’s lip to brush over Jiang MingYuan’s cheek.
