Nie AnAn was thinking about what Mother Nie said today and was distracted when she bit into the soup dumpling, and all the juice splattered over her face. 

She quickly stood up to get some napkins, but Huo YanXiao, sitting on the other end, had already grabbed one and started wiping the juice away for her. 

He didn’t think too much about it beforehand, but at that very moment, he felt the softness of the girl’s skin on his fingertips through the thin layer of napkin along with a burning sensation.

The girl sitting in front of him had already been wiped clean. She was looking at him with her limpid eyes as though there was something she wanted to say. 

“Big brother,” Nie AnAn finally said. “Over at the Nie’s today, Aunty asked me if I wanted to look for my birth parents.”

Huo YanXiao paused suddenly and suddenly understood.

Sure enough, he just needed to place her over at the Nie’s, and they’d start going down that path. He just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

Nie AnAn tugged on Huo YanXiao’s sleeve gently and asked, “Do you believe me, big brother?”

Huo YanXiao couldn’t help but smile. “Yes, I believe you.”

Having said that, he looked down at the pink fingers that were wrapped around his sleeve and said in a soft voice, “Be good. Let’s have dinner first.”

“Oh, okay.” Nie AnAn sat down, took a couple of bites, and asked again, “Do you support me, big brother?”

“Of course I do. That’s why I supported you going over to the Nie’s,” said Huo YanXiao as he looked at Nie AnAn. “AnAn, it’s safe over there.”

Thinking about the Huo YanXiao’s ending in the book, Nie AnAn was worried all over again. “Big brother, we don’t really care about what the Qin’s have to offer…”

“Mm, don’t worry. I got this.” Huo YanXiao nodded.

Everything was normal the two following days. 

When Thursday came and before Nie AnAn headed over to the Nie’s, she received a call from Mother Nie. 

Perplexed, she picked up the phone. From the other end, came Mother Nie’s obviously very emotional voice, “AnAn, there’s something I want to tell you!”

Having said that, she didn’t wait for Nie AnAn to respond before she carried on, “The truth was, Lao Nie and I used to have a daughter. But we lost her in a fire 18 years ago. Another child died in a fire that day and we thought that was our daughter…”

Nie AnAn suddenly figured out what Mother Nie wanted to tell her.

She wasn’t certain whether Mother Nie had waited for two days before she decided to let the drama unfold or that she truly had just found out, but she played along nonetheless. “Then what happened, Aunty?”

“Lao Nie and I had been very sad all these years. We really wished that our daughter was still alive, but unfortunately…. “ She sighed and suddenly switched the line of the conversation, “Remember you gave us your hair? We took them to a few DNA banks to no avail, so we thought we’d try to match them against our and they were a match!”

She summarized, “You know what that means? You are our daughter! AnAn, you are our long-lost daughter!”

Mother Nie said everything in one shot before she put her hand over her heart and tried to calm her breathing. 

Next to her, Father Nie gave her a thumbs up.

That was such good acting. 

Mother Nie could hear Nie AnAn’s breathing coming from the other end. For reasons beyond understanding, they made Mother Nie feel nervous all over again.

Nie AnAn had known this all along. Plus, she was a transmigrator, not the original owner. She had no idea how to react to this at all.
