The Witcher: Elemental Lords
#52 - Can't see the light
The woman looked at Dole without blinking. “I’m sincere this time.”
Dole's parents had passed away several years ago. He had been alone all this time. Being held by the hand like that did indeed remind him of many things.
He inconspicuously let go, leaving the warmth of her palm. His eyes narrowed slightly. “Alright.”
The girl’s changing voice had served as a reminder. This was a form of disguise, and he could do the same.
The two of them returned to the corner again. The girl’s tone returned to normal, and she said urgently, “The noble we’re going to kill is a fallen noble with only one guard, who also acts as a butler. This is the information.” She took out several pieces of paper and placed them in front of Dole.
She wasn't looking for a teammate on a whim. She had been here for several days and had seen other people, but they were all no good. She only felt a spark when she saw Dole.
Older assassins had complicated minds, and she couldn’t trust them at all.
Dole looked at the woman’s face for a moment before picking up the information and carefully reading it.
The target they were going to assassinate was a minor noble named Bundy. He had a habit of abusing maids and had played several of them to death. The elder brother of one of the maids was a captain in the military. After this was discovered, the two families became enemies. Bundy was a noble, while the maid’s brother was just a commoner. Under the dual pressure of the military and the nobility, the brother had no choice but to compromise. However, he couldn’t swallow his anger, so he saved up for many years and spent all his gold coins to offer a reward for Bundy’s head.
The girl accepted this mission because this Bundy was guilty and was simply the common enemy of all women.
Bundy’s address, family members, and usual habits were clearly marked on it. Dole frowned after only a few glances.
“I have things to do during the day and can only operate at night. Although there’s a lot of information, I need to scout it out myself. Let’s share the mission first. I don’t want to act alone.” The risk of assassinating a noble was too great, and he didn’t want to act alone.
Hearing about sharing the mission, the girl relaxed and said, “Okay, I can go with you then. You can call me Lily.”
Without thinking, Dole said, “You can call me Ado.”
Neither of them used their real names.
Afterward, Lily handed Dole a slip of paper with an address on it. The two agreed on where to meet after they were ready.
Dole glanced at it and put the slip of paper in his pocket.
After leaving the Assassin’s Guild, Dole quickly disappeared into the darkness.
As a wizard, Dole could feel several gazes on him, and then as he moved, those gazes disappeared.
Assassin’s Guild!
Dole knew that Cardia’s invitation for him to join the Assassin’s Guild was not made with good intentions, but he didn’t have much of a way to refuse. The Assassin’s Guild had too many things he needed: magic, battle qi, all kinds of information. These were all necessary.
After completing a mission, Dole automatically became a one-star assassin, but he was all too clear about what kind of place the Assassin’s Guild was. It was full of assassins, all reckless people who would risk their lives for money. He needed to be careful at all times and couldn’t trust anyone.
Dole wasn’t excited about receiving a reward of a little over one gold coin. A one-star mission was still a bit shabby for a mage. It was far less than what he could earn by refining mental strength potions. Alchemy was a powerful foundation that a wizard should master because it was a legitimate way to make money, although it was still shady.
Fortunately, he still knew Old Mike.
Dole quickly became famous at the blacksmith shop. He entered the intermediate warrior apprentice stage early and soon started using the No. 4 hammer. The large hammer, when wielded in his hands, gave people a great sense of pressure.
Of course, in normal circumstances, the No. 3 hammer was still easier to use. Most second-level blacksmiths used the No. 3 hammer, while the No. 4 hammer was commonly used by third-level blacksmiths.
Dole’s rapid advancement to a second-level blacksmith was quite shocking at Mondo Blacksmith Shop. Even Harley, who knew the details, couldn’t help but feel a bit apprehensive. How did this guy cultivate? Where did he buy the medicine? This cultivation progress was clearly not that of an ordinary person, even faster than a noble.
However, he also knew that Dole wasn’t a bad person and didn’t have any bad intentions. He just wanted to live quietly, so he let him be. Even if he was causing trouble, as long as he didn’t cause trouble at the blacksmith shop, he would let him be.
After advancing to a second-level blacksmith, Dole felt full of power every day he worked at the forge. His blood and energy surged, and his bones slowly became dense and tough under the influence of his body, gradually moving towards becoming an advanced warrior apprentice.
Speaking of which, there was also a small regret. As his blood and energy increased and his body functions became vigorous, it became difficult for him to enter meditation every night. His blood and energy were too strong, and every time his heart beat, he felt a tremor throughout his body. This confused Dole.
Because in Naruley’s biography, he never seemed to have had such concerns and seemed to have had smooth sailing all the way.
Dole didn’t care too much about it and tried to suppress the rhythm of his body’s blood and energy with his mental strength. It was okay at first, but later, as his blood and energy became more and more vigorous, this method didn’t work. Dole had to stop taking strength potions and agility potions.
According to Baal, it was more suitable for him to walk the path of a wizard, and battle qi could be put on hold for now.
Soon, half a month passed.
Mountain City in July was still not hot. The evening breeze was still a bit chilly. There were very few people on the streets at night, only one or two pedestrians passing by in a hurry. Dole put on his clothes, a black robe, and slowly walked towards the slums.
Soon, he arrived at the slums. Almost without searching, he came to the door of a small house and gently knocked five times.
The small door creaked open, which was obviously quite jarring in the silent night.
Dole felt slightly heavy in his heart and walked into the small door.
There was nothing in the house. The ground was full of garbage. A black figure stood at the door. It was shrouded in black clothes, with a cloak and a black hat on its head, so it was impossible to see whether it was male or female.
“You’ve come.” A crisp female voice sounded.
Dole nodded. He lifted the hood on his head, revealing Ado’s face, and said, “I’m ready. When are we going to scout, or are we going to scout separately?”
Lily glanced at Dole through a layer of gauze. She gently removed the cloak from her head, revealing an ordinary face, the same one from the Assassin’s Guild last time.
Dole smelled a scent at this time, the scent of disguise potion.
Lily looked at Dole and said with certainty, “Are you a wizard apprentice?”
Dole chuckled, “You smelled it too?”
Lily sighed and said, “Yes, I’m also a wizard apprentice. We may be working together for a long time in the future. Let me tell you about myself first. One of my ancestors was a wizard. I only became a wizard when I was rummaging through my ancestors’ belongings. It’s just that it’s too difficult to advance as a wizard, so I ventured out. What about you?”
She looked at Dole with bright eyes.
Dole’s expression didn’t change. He had long suspected that this woman was a wizard apprentice, because whether it was a hunter, an assassin, or a warrior, their blood and energy couldn’t be so weak. He had sensed it that day at the Assassin’s Guild.
He thought for a while and said, “I found a book with a way to become a wizard, but it only goes up to the advanced level. It doesn’t say how to become a level one wizard, so I’ll have to find a way to become a level one wizard myself in the future.”
The two of them ‘openly’ explained themselves to each other, which was considered to lay the foundation for mutual trust.
Lily didn’t speak. She had a way to become a level one wizard, but it cost too much money and she couldn’t afford it at all. Moreover, so far, she had no source of funds other than the Assassin’s Guild.
However, since everyone was a wizard and couldn’t be seen in the light, Lily relaxed. Wizards could only trust wizards, and no one else could be trusted. “Since we’re both wizards, can I take the liberty to ask, how did you advance?”
