Hong Jin Ho is a retired pro-gamer (StarCraft). He’s a strong player, but he’s never been first place. Because he got second place a LOT, he was heavily attacked online for never coming first. In Korean, this is called 까이다 which literally means “to peel.” So his fans started saying to stop “peeling (attacking)” the bean. 

Why the bean? It’s become sort of a legend. No one’s really sure of its origins, but one story (the one that I like) is that a Russian announcer said his name as “Kong Jin Ho” instead of “Hong Jin Ho.” 

“Kong” is the pure Korean word for bean. In hanja, it’s 두 (豆), which sounds like the pure Korean word for the number 2. This fits because… the whole second place thing. (I feel like a conspiracy theorist.)

Since they started calling him Bean for always being second, it eventually became internet slang for second place. People who always come second place are called Bean.

There’s a lot more to this; this is the abridged version of his wiki–I think I died trying to read all of that Korean. For some strange reason, the number 2 seemed to follow him throughout his career. Lots of weird coincidences. 

It’s kinda become an inside joke; a lot of his commercial deals involve the number 2. He’s capitalizing off of it so props to him.
