In the morning, I wake up to breakfast made by mother and auntie.

Mother, father, Brother Erik and Brother Oliver, Uncle Toni, Auntie Aiya, Brother Costi and Sister Celia, Teacher Tabasa, Beardy Uncle and the big brothers, we all eat together.

Back in the village, I don’t get to eat much, but here, I get to eat lots and lots.

I’m really happy here because I can get seconds if I want.

After breakfast, it is time to work.

Today, I work at father’s farm.

The tomatoes are big and full.

Father says it is all thanks to Brother Mukouda.

After work is over, it is time for lunch.

Everyone comes together to eat lunch made by mother and auntie.

Lunch is very delicious.

After lunch is study time.

I don’t like to study, but I want to do my best because mother and father told me to do my best.

Because getting to study is not easy.

Father, mother, Uncle Toni and Auntie Aiya are all very thankful to Brother Mukouda.

Father and mother said that Lotte should be thankful to Brother Mukouda too.

Lotte stood up and read her essay out loud.

At the end of the reading, Alban and Teresa both have very complicated expressions on their faces.

The rest of the children and adults exchange looks, unsure what to say.

“Being a rich man’s wife means you can buy whatever you want and eat delicious food every day.”

The twins were punished for giving out unnecessary information.

Attracted by the idea of delicious food, carefree little Lotte probably thought that becoming Mukouda-san’s bride just meant she would get to eat well forever.

On the other side, Toni and Aiya were whispering to their daughter, Celia.

Everyone else fell silent.

This was true. As slaves, they would not be able to refuse jobs that most people despised and could be put to work so long as it did not violate the ‘minimum quality of life’ clause. Even so…

“Compared to my Adventuring days, life here is a little like heaven, eh?”

They all nodded at Tabasa’s comment.

“My biggest worry now is wondering whether it’s okay for Mukouda-san to let us eat that high-quality meat,” [3] Irvine said with an awkward laugh.

“To people like us, having the opportunity to study letters and numbers… Mukouda-san is like a benevolent god,” [3] said Toni.

“Yes, [5] unexpectedly, even at this age we could still learn letters… I’m truly grateful,” said former poor farmer Alban.

Their wives nodded seriously.

“Mmm, we can’t do much for the master as slaves,” said Bartel. “However, I still have my pride as a dwarf and intend to repay this good life by protecting this house and obeying all of Mukouda’s instructions.”

“Exactly. Which is why I am giving my all to these study lessons,” said Tabasa firmly.

Meanwhile, the parents herded their children to one side and quietly said, “Don’t ever grow up to be that kind of people…”
