Trinitas Mundus - The Story of Saint Knight Ray
Lesson 22: Academic Cities
Leaving Periclitle, the Rays continue west on Aurelia Avenue. The academic city of Doctus is about two hundred km west of Periclitle.
Aurelia Street is the most important street in the northern part of the continent of Tria, connecting the commercial city of Aulera in the west with Lax, Sartooth in the north and Kaum in the south, so there is no interruption in the flow of people to and from it.
From Periclitle, look to the left at the Fatas River and continue into the countryside.
He traveled down the street rocked by horses, but without the kind of danger of Fonce Street connecting Periclitle to Fonce, he was relaxing and advancing his horse while avoiding the hauling cars of different merchants.
Nothing happened, he passed cities like Orton, Armaswaite, and four days later, on November 20th, he arrived in Doctus, the largest academic city in the northern part of the continent.
Doctus is a city sandwiched by the Saeum Mountains to the north and the Fatas River to the south, originally a fortified city in the north of the Caerm Empire.
The value of Doctus as a military base declined and gradually became lonely as Armaswaite further east became at the forefront with the policy of enlargement of the Empire.
Yet another three hundred years or so ago, the independence of the Holy King Luke from the Empire changed the policy of the North and further diminished the value of Doctus as a fortified city.
It was the Sorcerer's Guild that laid eyes on it. They were based in the imperial capital Plymouth in the southern part of the Empire, but were inconvenient to enter the northern part of the continent and chose Doctus as their base, close to countries such as Lax, Sartooth and Kaum and relatively safe.
Initially it was a city set on a lonely periphery, with only one side being surrounded by a stone wall of 1 km sufficient. However, as the fighting in the northern part of the empire subsides and further in the western part - near the Holy King of Lukes - the trade in the northern part of the Tria continent develops around the Union of Urban States, mainly Aurelia. For this reason, Doctus also flourished as an accommodation town on Aurelia Street.
The new town will be structured naturally so as to surround the old town, as the traffic on the streets of Aurelia increases. And it developed into a city two kilometers north and south, four kilometers east and west.
From the history of the city, the Old Town has an academic city, the New Town has a character as a commercial city, with a population of five thousand inhabitants in the Old Town and a total of fifteen thousand inhabitants in the New Town, but there are only simple fences around the New Town, equal to no defenses. For this reason, there is no need for a market entry tax in the new city, and it is also possible to do something like a free market. However, in order to enter the old town on the academic city side, an entry tax of 2C (krona) (= about 2,000 yen) will be required.
Once the Rays had taken the inn to the new town, they were scheduled to enter the old town the next day.
November 21st.
Lead Ginny through the gates into the Old Town.
Ginny has suggested taking an inn in the Old Town. The Old Town Inn is somewhat higher than the New Town, but the explanation was that if you are not a resident, you should take the Inn in the Old Town because you will be taxed every time you go around the gate.
The three of them accepted it.
Going around the gate, a stone castle fort enters the front.
"It's a library. The number of books in the world is the highest."
Ray makes his eyes shine and nods at Ginny's explanation.
(Best library in the world...... what's it like?
"Do you even put travelers like us in the library?
"I'll let you in," he asked. Instead, we need one gold coin (= 100C = 100,000 yen) and one half silver coin (= five C) for the admission fee, "Ginny replies.
(Five thousand yen just to get in... that's pretty expensive)
A little further and you'll see a fine stone building on your right.
Surrounded by slab walls, peering through the gate, there was a three-story building and a courtyard-like square.
About mid teens practiced magic in the square.
"This is today's destination, the Tilia School of Magic." Those kids are probably in third grade. "
The Tilia School of Magic is usually enrolled at the age of twelve or three in a five-year school. In addition to magic, it is an elite school that teaches mathematics, history, geography, and political science.
Most of the graduates serve the country and nobility, and some become court magicians, embrace healers, and even bureaucrats.
Nothing makes you an adventurer like Ginny, but the young mage who left the college is inferior to his physical abilities, so neither does the adventurer actively solicit him.
"I'll see if Dr. Raspade is here. I'm sorry, but you'll wait here."
That's all I said, Ginny disappeared right into the gate.
The three left were watching the students' classes as they were seen by the gatekeepers.
(Even when you went to the magician's tower where Mr. Annekis - Fonce's court magician - was, the young kids were practicing magic. Short capes and canes are standard here, too. It feels like some kind of uniform or cape is colourful. One, two... about six colors. Maybe they use different colors for each attribute)
Ginny came back in about fifteen minutes.
"They have a lecture in the morning, so I'm supposed to come back in the afternoon. We still have, like, four hours, but what do we do?
Ashley looks at Ray, "Do you want to see the city?"
"Right. I want to look for an inn, keep a horse, and then I want to see the city, Mr. Ginny, is that okay?
Ginny said, "Okay. Because there's an inn I know," he says, and starts walking forward.
We arrived in front of one inn in about five minutes.
It is a gray stone three-story building with two entrances due to the concomitant establishment of a liquor store.
"I wish this place was empty..." The Sage's Away ”is a joke name, but the food is pretty good, and it's a cozy place to stay"
I go inside the inn so Ginny can pull me off.
A woman about forty years old appears from the back.
When Ginny bows her head, "Mr. Benita, it's been a while," the woman, Benita, smiles.
"Ginny? It's been a really long time. When did you get back? ……
The two of them had left the Rays behind and flowered a couple of minutes ago.
"Oh, I'm sorry. A customer, perhaps?
Ray smiled bitterly, "I'd like to rent four rooms for one, are you available?" I ask.
Benita looked in trouble and thought about the relationship between the four of them, "The four are a little... if there's one for two and two for one, it's empty," she has suggested.
Ray said, "Ash, Stella, what do we do?" Asking, "Stella replies," I don't mind here, "before Ashley answers.
Ray looks a little troubled and looks at Ashley's face, but sees her snort
"So please. Can you also take care of the horse..."
After checking fees and such, he took the horse to the stables and rolled it out to the city.
Sometimes the buildings of the old town of Doctus are former fortified cities, all made of grey stone. As a result, it feels a little bitter across the board, but I try to create the brightest possible atmosphere with colorful shelter (awnings), decorating flowers under wooden windows, etc.
The vicinity of the Inn was sometimes close to the College, with many bookstores, stationery, and magic prop materials to sell, and Ashley looked interesting, as well as Ray.
Ray said to that, "Didn't Ash ever come here?," he asked.
"There are several times in the new town, but this is the first time in the old town"
The merchants rarely go as far as the old town as they enter the new town lined with major chambers of commerce. As a result, escorts rarely enter the Old Town. Few people in this old town felt like adventurers and mercenaries like the Rays, and all they saw armed was about a guard squad.
Ginny, leading the way, looks back,
"Right. Normally, adventurers and mercenaries do not enter the Old Town. There's only so many people in the college looking for things to do or special tools."
Exactly no excavations were found, and it was lunchtime just because Ray bought one of the magic books. I picked up a meal in the cafeteria near the college and headed to the college.
He was asked to submit a weapon as he crawled through the College Gate, in a round-handed state, but the figure of the three mercenary-like armors was quite floating within the College.
All the different students looked back and said, "Who are you?," he leans his neck.
(Guess it's just magicians and civilian people coming after all. My gear looks like a knight, but I guess it's unusual because Ash is obviously some kind of mercenary...)
Guided by Ginny, he goes back inside the college building.
When she arrives at a painting lined with small rooms like a university lab, Ginny alerts the three of them in front of one door.
"Dr. Lionel Raspade I'm about to meet is an elf, so he looks pretty young. But I'm also an old stock teacher at this college fighting over one or two. You must be over one hundred and fifty for sure. And don't eat it because you're very (...) different."
The three of them said, "Don't you want to eat?," leaning his neck, but Ginny doesn't mind it, knocking on the door.
From inside, I heard a young man say "come in".
When Ginny goes in, "Excuse me," the three of them follow suit.
Inside the room illuminated by the magic props of the lights, an elf man, visible only in his mid-twenties, was on his desk.
The man would be a beautiful blonde if cared for, but he just bracketed his blush hair behind him, and the outfit was also wearing gray clothes similar to the uniforms the students were wearing.
And on the desk in front of him, the book is packed in a mess, and the cupboard next to the desk is lined with tools of no use. There were many notes like paper dropping at his feet, and Ray immediately came to his mind with the word "Mad Scientist”.
(You feel like a handsome Mad Scientist. It's also a hundred or ten years old muscled...... it's not going to be a busy thing when you get too involved......)
The man is writing some notes as he heads to his desk and looks like he's ignoring the Rays.
When Ginny starts talking to her teacher, "There's something I want you to see…" she says, "Wait a minute. Pay me" and she doesn't stop her hand moving the pen.
(That's going to be a long time... to move these people...)
Ray never opens his mouth.
"I have a magic team I want my teacher to see. It belongs to the Demons too..."
At that moment, making the sound of Gatan, he turned to the Rays.
"Say that quickly and pay. Can you show it to me soon?"
When Ray says to Ginny, "Give me that note," Ginny retrieves the note like, oh man.
Raspade stares at that note so much that the hole opens when he snatches it up. And then suddenly I get up and throw away some books, and I start looking for books.
Ashley and Stella couldn't keep up with the development, and kept their eyes open and solidified.
Ray was grinning bitterly at the unfolding as expected.
He finds the book of purpose, scrolls the page abusively, and compares the drawings he writes to Ginny's notes.
And as I looked at the note,
"Where did you find this? Earlier, I said," Are you sure it belongs to the Demons? "
Ginny tries to explain, but Ray replaces her and starts explaining.
"The location is a cave near an abandoned village called the village of Thysek, southeast of Periclitle. I'm not sure if it belongs to the Demon Nation, but I thought it might be the Demon Nation because there were signs of the Winged Demon Lesser Demon."
Raspade put the note on his desk,
"This magic formation is a depiction of the attributes of wind, earth, light and darkness. They are both anti-attribute to each other, but well made to avoid interference..."
The Rays have no idea what Raspade is trying to say. Raspade doesn't mind the Rays, he moves on.
"Wind stands for space and non-matter, and soil stands for matter. Darkness denotes death, light denotes regeneration. It is possible from this that… there is a high probability that the magic formation of the transfer or summons"
The four will cease to be "forwarded…" and wait for the next word of Raspade.
"There is something similar to the magic formations found in ancient ruins. Some of them were supposedly damaged and unknown. In my research I have come to the conclusion that it is a magic formation of summonses, but now I can support my hypothesis..."
Ray expressed his doubts about Raspade, who started off as a bump.
"I mean with the magic formations of forwarding or summoning, how capable are they?
Raspade stopped talking to himself and said, "How big is this?" I've been asking the opposite question.
When Ray answered about 3m in diameter, he was surprised to open his eyes.
"Probably a pretty big one, big enough to transfer or summon"
"Don't you know whether it's a transfer or a subpoena? I think it means a lot different things?
Raspade shook his neck sideways,
"No, it's not that different. This magic formation hits the exit. If it was a summons, it would pour magic into it and force it to call, and if it was a transfer, it would be like the landmark" marker "of what was sent every magic from the source of the transfer. The point is the exit of the hole. Just think of it as the degree of difference between pulling it out or pushing it in on its own."
"Does that mean this magic formation is for exits only?
"You're right. You wouldn't know, but the darkness and the light, the order of the soil and the wind are drawn to be the exit. To the condition of darkness to light, wind to earth. If you want to send it in, convert it from“ light ”, or“ raw ”, to“ dark ”, convert it from“ soil ”or“ matter ”, to“ wind ”, which is“ immaterial/space ”, and send it into another space. The order of this one is the opposite. Well, it's just a hypothesis."
Ray nods so much.
And I'm concerned that I've come to this world,
"Is transfer a technology that exists or existed?
Raspade makes the face that he doesn't understand the intent of the question,
"At least it's a move we don't have. present and past. But I can't say that demons other than us or dragons of high intelligence don't have them. Why would you ask me that?
Ray is stuck with the words "No, you know..." I can't say anything.
As if Ashley would follow,
"We were fighting demons in the land east of Lax. The way that demon tribe appeared was abrupt, so I wondered. Right, Ray?
Ray nods "yes," stroking his chest down in his heart.
(I'm in a bit of a hurry. Thanks to Ash for saving me. If I say what I want to know about how I came to this world, I'm going to be imprisoned...)
"Right... Ginny, you said you. Can we go to this place?
Ginny worries about how to answer, looks at Ray. Ray shook his head sideways,
"It's a very dangerous place. Recently, we were about to be wiped out, too, so we will need to take a hundred man escort. And..."
Ignoring the fact that Raspade is whining "a hundred people," he goes on to talk.
"... and that magic formation should have already been destroyed. I know we've seen it, so if it's the Demons who are using it, it's more reasonable to assume that they've already tried to hide the evidence."
Raspade looks a little unfortunate and mutters, "Well......"
And as if you remembered something, "Who are you people if you say so?" He asked the Rays.
Ray and Ashley start introducing themselves, smiling face to face.
"I am a mercenary named Ashley Markat. This is my buddies Ray and Stella. At the request of the Alliance of Adventurers in Periclitle, he surveyed the area around the village of Thysek."
"I see. I'm late for an introduction, but I'm Lionel Raspade. I'm a professor at this college. Well, I guess Ginny's asking you around, huh?
At the end of his introduction, Ray asks another question about what he wants to hear, the demon's servant.
"I was attacked by demons who served in this investigation. That demon has no magic props, and I don't know how you manipulated it, but I'd like to know what your teacher thinks?
"You serve without demon tools... what kind of demon was that?
Ray lists demons that have been attacked, such as killer bees (killer hornets) and gray monkeys (gray apes).
"The insect system, the beast system, the ghost system... I don't specialize in demons (Monster Tame)..."
Having said no, I'll explain.
Raspade's description says that Monster Tame has several ways, if you are insect based, you may use a special odor, or if you are beast based, you may use medicinal herbs to hand nostalgic. I don't know how about ghost systems, but the demonic ghost tribes are knitting up ways to be family members in special rituals.
"When it comes to using insect, beast, and ghost systems at once, all you can think about is how to assimilate your spirit into demons with dark attribute magic. Of course, we don't have that kind of magic, but a demon tribe that manipulates dark attributes might be able to. Well, I don't specialize in this either, so I'll ask the teacher."
(assimilate demons and spirits? I'm not sure. How is it different from a slave collar?
"The teacher's specialty was magic formation and magic props. What is it about the collar of slaves?
Raspade makes it hard to say for the first time to Ray's question.
"I'm sorry, but I'm forbidden about the collar of slaves. It's only known to use dark attributes, but it's not the only one."
"Is it contraindicated... it's certainly not a good piece of publicly available information"
Having heard what they wanted to hear, the Rays tried to resign from Raspade's room.
When they stood up, Raspade said,
"If I know anything about the magic team, I'll tell you too. I'll probably forget my promise to tell you, so come here sometimes. I can tell you any new facts at that time."
The Rays bow their heads, grinning bitterly so that they don't look like Raspades.
"Thank you for your busy day. I'll ask you later."
Outside the room, Ginny sighs loudly.
"And you're amazing, Ray. I can't believe I can have a normal conversation with that Dr. Raspade."
When Ray tries to say something, Ashley slaps Ray on the shoulder laughing.
"This guy hardly cares if he's a big guy. I don't know if he's a big guy or just a blunt one."
"Ash, you don't have that. Well, I know you're not a big shot, but they say you're dull... can't you deny it? Ha ha."
Three people were caught laughing at him and the four of us left the college laughing.
