Episode 66 – Future Plans

It was about one hour after the Dumbbell Weed’s bitterness triumphed over the Glutamate Herb stock. My nausea and stomach ache finally subsided, and I was able to move my body again.

…Still, wow. The destructive power of Dumbbell Weed was really a force to be reckoned with. Just one spoonful of the Dumbbell Weed powder was enough to completely destroy the entire bowl of delicious stock. I could no longer hope to come up with a way to eat Dumbbell Weed without experiencing its bitterness.

Perhaps the best way of doing it was to enclose the Dumbbell Weed powder in something and then immediately get it into the stomach without tasting it, but… that’d probably be impossible. I’d been thinking about it so much that I was going in circles at this point, but I hadn’t been able to come up with a solution.

Since no solutions were coming, I decided to forget about it and drink some of the Glutamate Herb stock to cleanse my palate. The one that I had chopped into fine pieces and simmered down in a small amount of water was already smelling wonderful. I pinched some of the fine pieces between my fingers and tried it.

Mmmmmm! Delicious! As I expected, no matter how Glutamate Herb was cooked, it would taste great. It was already good enough as is, but maybe it would also be good over some bread.

The good thing about this method was that the umami flavor was even more condensed. But the bad part about it was that, when the leaves were boiled down like this, the amount would inevitably shrink. However, it was tightly bundled and extremely tasty.

I was happily chowing away at it, but, before I knew it, it was gone in a flash. I was going to use the rest of the Glutamate Herb soup tomorrow, and of course there was still the Glutamate Herb that I had hung to dry. I was feeling a bit peckish and really wanted to eat something, but… the last thing I wanted was to try to synthesize another Glutamate Herb only to fail due to a lack of magic power.

I decided to tolerate it and just go to bed early so I could be productive tomorrow. A lot happened today, and, because I had built up a lot of physical and mental fatigue, I should be able to fall asleep soon. It was still light out, but I got ready for bed and lay down. From here, it was time to find out exactly how much magic power each Glutamate Herb cost. Since my current magic power capacity was 14, however many Medical Herbs I could synthesize from here on would allow me to work backward to find out exactly how much one Glutamate Herb cost. I started synthesizing one Medical Herb after the other.

I synthesized four Medical Herbs with no problem, but the problem was from here on. If the cost of Glutamate Herb was 7 or higher, I wouldn’t be able to synthesize two Glutamate Herbs at once with my current magic power capacity. I didn’t know how much Glutamate Herb could be sold for, but, if it wasn’t on the market yet, it could probably be sold for a high price. If that was the case, I hoped the Glutamate Herb would cost 7 or less so I could generate more of it.

Holding that wish in mind, I synthesized the fifth one. Alright, no weakness symptoms yet.

I continued onto the sixth with no problems… and finally, it was time for the crucial seventh one.

""

I was a little nervous, but… I managed to synthesize the seventh Medical Herb without weakness symptoms. With this, I would be able to make two Glutamate Herbs in a single day given my current circumstances.

From here, it was only a matter of how much lower the cost would go… But when I began synthesizing the eighth Medical Herb, the weakness symptoms piled on halfway through, and I couldn’t move. So in the end, the cost of synthesizing Glutamate Herb was 7, huh? Taking into account the high level, I thought that it was a pretty low cost in comparison.

I didn’t know how much it would sell for in the market, but from a layman’s perspective, this Glutamate Herb was smelling like money, which left me hopeful.

With my magic power depleted, I went to sleep to welcome the next day. From the pack of Angry Wolves chasing us down the mountain late at night… to the battle with the Angry Wolf, I had built up more physical and mental exhaustion than I had expected. I had thought that I would wake up early since I went to sleep early, but, when I next opened my eyes, it was already noon.

After that long period of sleep, I stretched my stiff body with a massive yawn. Soon after, I got up and started making a bunch of preparations. Today, I planned to go to the Adventurer’s Guild and finish the procedures. And after I retrieved my bag, I would go to Elf’s Tears and sell the herbs I had collected. In the case that I didn’t get my bag back, I would go to Iron Will to ask Dantetsu to process the Angry Wolf materials I got yesterday.

If I did get my bag back, in the evening I would go to the inn, Bee House, to see if Lyra and Nina were available. I wanted to go to a store where I could sell the spices and ask how to use spices in cooking. Now that I had a rough plan for the day outlined, I headed for the Adventurer’s Guild.

When I arrived, I walked directly to the reception desk to report the quest commission completion status. It had already been a full day, so they probably already knew the details of the situation.

I would love to hear a detailed explanation as to why we were attacked by a pack of Angry Wolves. This information would affect how I moved from here on, and there was the possibility that I would have to find a new place to gather plants and herbs. I walked up to the reception desk, thinking that it would be a shame if Mount Cornello became unusable as a gathering site.
